He looks a very handy addition to our squad. Yes, he does seem to get on the wrong
side of his man at times but he's very very quick to recover. Besides, I'm sure Mr K
will sort that out in no time.

Welcome to The Clarets ever improving and increasing entourage Ian and good luck.

Bournemouth sold what they had to but based their return to the PL on holding on to most of their PL players. They had players costing £200m, plus loan players I dare say, in their 2020-21 squad. We;re going the opposite route of selling most of the saleable players and rebuilding from the ground up with a much lower squad cost. Bournemouth as a comparator is as dissimilar as it gets.
Why do you presume Bournemouth based their return to the PL on holding on to their players? They sold/released a tonne of players, some of them fodder and some to balance the books. Not too dissimilar to us.

Their main outgoings were:

Fraser
Ibe
Daniels
Defoe
Boruc
Surman
Francis
Ake
Ramsdale
Smith
Wilson
Arter

When you comment that Bournemouth spent £0 I assume that you are referring to their net transfer balance which would apply to Burnley also. If, however, you are claiming that they spent no money on incomings that is nonsense. They actually signed 5 players in the January 2022 window on deadline day including Freddie Woodman, Nat Phillips, Todd Cantwell and Kieffer Moore. Some were loans which applies to Burnley's dealings also.

When Bournemouth came down they made £23.9m in sales of which ££21.2m was accounted for by the sale of 1 player Danjuma to Villarreal. Jamal Lowe and Ryan Christie were signed for fees (undisclosed) and Gary Cahill join on a free transfer along with a couple of other players.

I have no idea where the other £50m plus figure on outgoings that you refer to came from.

Or was it just for dramatic effect?
Bournemouth were relegated two years ago, not last year. They sold Ake, Ramsdale, Wilson for about that.

Watford did something similar when they were relegated in 2020. Of the 19 players who played the most games that season I count 9 who departed so very similar to us and they gained promotion the following season. Norwich only sold 2 of their squad so just goes to show it’s impossible to say what is the best approach. The key is the manager and the sense that our signings are very much the players he wants to bring to the club rather than Pace foisting sone cheapo youngsters on him whilst selling senior pros behind his back.

I'm basing it on the idea that at the end of all their outgoings, the retained parts of their PL squad had cost them a combined £192m in transfer fees. I don't know who they were, but they certainly held on to a lot of value in their squad. We are not doing that, we're clearing out most of the players who cost us any money and replacing them with cheaper options.

They actually kept alot of their better players, aside from Ake, Wilson (who was always injured) and Harry Wilson (who was on loan). They retained Begovic, Brooks, Steve Cook, Solanke, Lerma, Adam Smith, Lewis Cook, Diego Rico, Jack Stacey, Billing, Mepham, Lloyd Kelly. That's an incredibly strong Championship bunch.

I don't care who leaves, providing they are replaced by adequate quality, enough quality to really challenge for automatic promotion. I consider O'Hare an adequate replacement for Cornet. I'd consider Piroe, Delap, Archer, Brewster, Armstrong a very good incoming to the front line. I'll judge the window and team at the end of the window.
it will be interesting to see if we do get Delap if they ditch the contract offer for Vydra

I agree with the analogy that Pace is having a fire sale. That doesn't mean the end is nigh.
At the moment transfers and rumours are coming thick and fast. That means there has been lots and lots of planning.
And yes, the incoming of new faces is exciting, purely because we don't know what to expect.
Players like Delap look promising and definitely something to get excited about.
The problem for me is that the whole club is revolving around one person again.
What will happen if VK gets an offer he can't refuse in December ?
I’m glad somebody brought this up, or alternatively he isn’t ready to manage in the Championship. We will have a hell of a lot of baggage for a new manager coming in.

We stick with him and the players. I highly doubt he will leave in the first season, and a monkey could get this side to a top 10 finish.

The players being put in place are purposely sustainable ones.

Can we just look at the positives for once. For years Burnley fans have complained at the age of our signings.

We’re hitting the reset button, and we’re going to be the most anticipated side by every neutral this season.

Everyone is talking about Burnley. Everyone wants to see how Burnley are going to get on.

Maybe Charlie is going to Leeds on loan to cover the long term Firpo injury. We profit by the bigger loan fee and difference in wages saved. Next year hopefully we’re in the Prem with Prem money and Charlie comes back.

I like the look of this Maatsen kid he was very solid at Coventry last season, good signing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgUMcd-1XTw
Looks a very exciting prospect.....reminds me of Trippier (t'other side o t' pitch) for you pedantic types.

I've been in Donegal for 10 days, & i can tell you, people are talking about Burnley....most were Man U fans but were keeping a keen eye on our signings & talking about Kompany etc.

I haven't commented for a while but have been following this thread & find it incredible that the minute we sign a ton of exciting young prospects...certain posters start calling for experienced championship players......Gary Cahill has been mentioned a few times...FFS!

I'm looking forward to the coming season more than any in recent memory.

I wouldn't be surprised if all our senior players haven't had their agents sounding out Prem clubs, Charlie is a Leeds fan, it would make sense to go back there, if they want him. For once, it seems like we are being proactive in bringing in players before the likes of McNeil, Cornet or Brownhill go.

Or, if we are going to play 3 at the back, Charlie could play LCB, who knows ?

It seems like nostalgic Leeds fans just making it up, and the vast majority don’t seem to want him back.

I’d be surprised if he went there.

Cornet though, I wouldn’t be surprised if he replaced Raphina.

A couple more names to add to the list:

Bart Verbruggen - 19yo Dutch keeper currently reserve at Anderlecht
https://www.lesoir.be/454012/article/20 ... tterSports

Noah Ohio - 19yo striker at Leipzig, apparently all set to join Liege today but we're trying to make a last minute bid to lure him here.

If you can find a team that has been promoted to the premier league without at least one experienced defender then please let us all know.

Gary Cahill has been mentioned (including by me) cos he is experienced, out of contract (and therefore relatively cheap with no transfer fee) and has played at an extremely high level for many years. And I only talked about giving him a one year deal.
Does not have to be Cahill but it’s a very risky approach to have as little experience in our defence as we may start the season with - especially if we lose Taylor.

Verbruggen been mentioned a few times now. 19 year old though so it’s unlikely he’ll be coming in as number 1? Kompany and the new GK coach must clearly rate him though.

But you also have to appreciate that Bournemouth’s transfer policy in the PL was also at the complete opposite end of the spectrum to us.

We primarily went for experience over many years, whilst they went for youth and resale value.

You can’t deny that upon their relegation, Bournemouth did exactly the same as what we’re having to do now, which was make sales to balance the books and release a lot of fodder in their squad to bring wages down.

They were fortunate that their recruitment policy still left them with a lot of decent players, whereas us kicking the can down the road has left us with needing to have a pretty big rebuild.

Could be nothing in it, but Verbruggen initially came through the ranks at NAC Breda which was the club that our GK coach was a regular for 9 years, then 2 years as GK coach at Anderlecht, so it’s possible that they’ve known each other for some time and should know each other inside out. Maybe he will be back up to Cooper/Muric and BPF goes back to Sheff Wed? Who knows!

Just wondering whether any relegated club from the Premiership
has released or sold or moved on as many as we have (or are likely to)
as well as brought in six new young players (and still counting).
Can't think of any but maybe there is.

It's closing in on a complete rebuild. with probably more new faces
in the starting eleven than old faces.
Huddersfield perhaps:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%8 ... .C._season

Hopefully not an example of what will happen to us! They just escaped relegation that first year after a terrible start.

To be fair RV just because he was a good player doesn’t mean he knows how to manage a bunch of defenders (especially ones with very little experience). Realistically he’s got his work cut out in defence this season. I’m just hoping the attacking side of the game means we won’t need to defend that much.

How many more defenders do we need?
I'd feel a lot more comfortable with him in defence alongside Harwood-Bellis than young McNally being thrown in from the get-go. I do not mean that in a derogatory way towards the lad, but he would surely benefit from a year being gradually brought through behind those two (perhaps with the potential to replace THB in a years time when he goes back to City).

West Brom fans really rate O'Shea from reading their forum - they feel his injury last season (which is the reason he only played a small number of games, 14 I think) was the catalyst for their disappointing season. He only has a year left though and there are some suspecting that he might be jostling for a new contract with a large payrise as they think he is still on only £4000 a week. We need to be sure we aren't being played here (As we have been many times before!) by a player and agent looking to bump up their salary.

Huddersfield perhaps:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%8 ... .C._season

Hopefully not an example of what will happen to us! They just escaped relegation that first year after a terrible start.
Huddersfield sold all their players and didn't bother replacing them properly. Nowhere near the situation we're in.

They had a squad from 1 season in the top flight, we've got well over 1,000 Premier League appearance our side even if Cornet goes.

If we have a nightmare I'd still expect us to be mid-table.

Burnley did not get relegated because the defence was poor, they were the 10 th best in the EPL.

Three of them have already signed for EPL clubs with maybe more to come.

I am in the old head at the back camp, someone like Jonny Evans would be good.

It isn’t really a problem if we are being played by teams as long as we move fast with transfers, as we are doing. At worst, WBA will bump up his salary and use more of their budget. We then move on.

I’m not too concerned about right sided central defence if Roberts plays. He has enough experience, THB on the other side has enough too, then we have Cullen dropping back while in possession. We have ER, Long and McNally competing for that slot.

Noah Ohio - 19yo striker at Leipzig, apparently all set to join Liege today but we're trying to make a last minute bid to lure him here.

This lad was at City & United’s academy’s until recently, which probably explains the links.

Not a prolific scorer by any means but certainly quick and a physical presence!

Everyone talking about experience defender what is wrong with Longy?, our longest serving professional and ROI international who is capable of doing a job at this level.

Kompany will have us playing on the front foot were before under Dyche we always sat back putting pressure on our defence, we will be able to get away without the quality of Tarkowsk and Mee as hopefully we will camped in the opposition half.

When you don't score goals you don't win matches and get relegated

If you start to concede a few more goals (maybe through a lack of experience) you need to score even more goals

Long will never be first choice here unless we suffer a spate of injuries.
He's happy with that arrangement and so are the club by the looks of it.

THB has almost twice the number of appearances at this level than Long.

I think the concern is that I'd expect us to struggle at the start as its a new league, but then improve as the experience kicks in

If we haven't got the experience, then there is a danger of spiralling loss of confidence

Course, the flip side to that is that a completely new team will be completely unfazed by the championship, and have no premier league hangover at all

Its certainly exciting there is absolutely no doubt about that

Agree with all of that.

The flipside is that we could go to a Huddersfield Town still reeling from losing their manager and (soon) two best players in Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffollo and win 0-3, followed by a convincing home win against Luton and be absolutely flying.

I am also very excited for this season due to the many unknowns (I’ve never been more ready for a 5 hour round trip to Shrewsbury on a Friday night for a chuffing friendly!). Fans just need to stay the course with these players when they make errors, particularly at the back.

But Kevin Long has a lot more experience at this level than Virgil Van Dijk. I suppose it might make a difference if you consider PL experience is any use at this level?

From the attached reel, my first thoughts is that he finds himself on the wrong side of his man fairly regularly. That would certainly be punished by premier league wingers
Didn't he play as a wing back for Coventry? Where this is more likely to happen

The major factor in our relegation was a lack of goals. In the bottom 3 lowest scoring teams for successive seasons and it was those teams that went down. The previous season we dodged a bullet only 2 of the lowest scoring sides went down. 2 home games against relegation rivals Norwich and Watford where we kept clean sheets but fired blanks.

Last season in the Championship it was the 3 highest scoring sides that won promotion to the PL.
