Don't know why people engage with obvious wind up merchants. Foe 'em.

Promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking absolutely has to be the aim for next season, despite what our media department puts out.

Genuinely what is upsetting about what I said?

I said we are selling all of our premier league quality talent - just a true statement

Then someone else mentioned relegation and rebuffed that saying promotion chances are fading based on these sales. What exactly is so radical there
To be fair Cornet and Mcneil haven't left yet

Making bold claims like promotion and relegation is wild at this stage, we have no idea how they team will look/perform.

Well it sounds like the 'interest' in McNeil is a load of nothing, according to Chris Boden.

I hope that remains the case as I fancy him to be the best player in the Championship this season. I'd be gutted to lose him this summer (not to mention, I think he'll be worth a lot more in a years time having torn this league up, whether we get promoted or not - and he'll still have 1+1 years option in our favour left on his contract anyway).

Agree with this Jedi. I think he’ll explode in Kompany’s system. Genuinely excited to see him play.

It would be incredible if we could keep Dwight and Max. Really can’t see that happening as we will surely need to raise more funds but I think they would both have some impact under a new system.

A fully fit 46 game cornet would be excellent next season. At times last season I felt he was far too soft and seemed to go off at the slightest kick and the championship is even worse in terms of physicality

He went off with pulls and strains, not kicks and bumps.

The championship is knowwhere near as physical in running terms.
He should be back to playing in a possession side like he was at Lyon.

I'm not sure about that. Pretty sure he went off after he was on the end of strong challenges a couple of times. Good player but I wouldn't want him next to me in the trenches

Does this apply to any other player who went off after being on the end of a strong challenge?

It is managers who decide if a player is coming off not the player. At PL and Championship level any knock that impairs mobility is enough to get you subbed - heck, I even sub my walking football team players if they get such a knock!

I wouldn’t want him giving my car an MOT, but fortunately he’s a footballer, not an early 20th century soldier or mechanic.

Reinforces the point made by someone else the other day, Cornet is diving right into pre-season, hasn't made any untoward noises about wanting to leave or refusing to play in the championship etc.
If he goes then so be it, but from the outside he looks fully committed to Burnley as it stands.

As long as Kompany gets to decide, that is all that matters. If he wants to lose one top player to get two or three very promising players, I can see the logic. If he is told they have to go just for the finances, that is very bad for us fans. Obviously there has to be some reality biting, but there is a limit.

Generally I am a believer in the players who got us in this mess should hang around to get us out of it.

Where exactly does O'Hare, Brownhill, Twine, Bastien, Mcneil fit into a 4222? Cork is captain so assume he plays alongside Cullen. so 5 battling for 2 spots? I see further departures.
Reading the post on positional play, and it's usage, it appears nobody has a traditional position. They are all faced with so many players in one area across the pitch, so many players to an area along the pitch.
So if someone moves into your 'area', you move out. If you then overload that 'area' someone else has to move out. This way positions are constantly being rotated, constantly creating space, and angles, for keeping the ball moving forward.
Looking at it like that, there isn't 2 spots in midfield, just 5 players, who can rotate the position.

Apparently Burnley would expect £15M (yes fifteen million!) for McNeil from palace or WH… Sky presenter said it incredulously, hence the sarcasm…

If Dwight goes it has to be for more than £15M surely

https://twitter.com/footballdaily/statu ... -HlQnrHrjA
He also said he has 2 years to run, plus we have another year option on our side, so there's no rush or need to cash in. Unless of course it's needed to bring in a ready made replacement.

I don't quite understand? If Cork and Cullen start. How is there not 5 fighting for 2 spaces in midfield? Unless you're suggesting Mcneil, Brownhill, Twine, O'Hare or Bastien could be playing in one of the striker spots which is interesting.

Read the article, it explains it far better than me.

But basically nobody sits in a position, as under Dyche. They might appear there on the team sheet, but in order to create space and a pass, everybody rotates in and out of set areas. Cork could end up anywhere from LB to LW to CF.

It's Pep Ball, and a whole new world.

We need to start thinking "16 man team" under VK. Can see him using all 5 subs with some players not on their game coming off at half term. A far change from Barnes or Rodriguez coming on with 16 minutes to go and Vydra coming on with 3 minutes to go. Add to that 46 games a season, injuries and suspensions, But great competition for places

Haven’t read the post you refer to but that style is the Dutch total football from the ‘74 World Cup. Every outfield player had the ability to slip into any position and not embarrass themselves or the team.

And that is how it should be. The best footballers can play in more than one position, some can play in many positions. A few can play in any position. The ideal is to have many players, hopefully eleven, who are comfortable on the ball in any area of the pitch. Unfortunately there is a simple solution ( 2 actually) to that tactic but hopefully there are few coaches who have found an answer to the conundrum. Or the players to play it well enough. Belief being an important aspect of any such player/plan. What I like is that VK seems to be collecting the players required and the players signing must have bought into the plan. Cornet has experience of playing in various areas of the pitch, some others if remaining will need to learn to expand their skill set. Exciting Times.

An excellent point, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see much more squad rotation under Kompany as well.

Which for me is no bad thing, we don't want players in their comfort zone do we, knowing their places are guaranteed.

My fault the article is on the open training thread.
The video shows the pitch all marked out in areas, and someone posted a great link to an article on possession football.
It does go back to Cruyff and one of his buddies that took it to Barca, and Pep ran with it.
The link explains how the pitch is divided into zones, alo g the pitch, as well as across, and no more than x amount of players are allowed to occupy any zone.

It's worth reading

We probably will rotate more next season. We probably have more players of similar ability due to losing some of our better players. Worth bearing in mind though that we’ve let 10 players go and so far only brought 7 in - so as things stand we’re not in a better position to rotate the squad than we were last season.

Unfortunately they had a dud, Jongbloed, in goal and so all their enterprise couldn't cover for him. Goalkeeper most important position in any team and it should never be overlooked.

Haven’t read the post you refer to but that style is the Dutch total football from the ‘74 World Cup. Every outfield player had the ability to slip into any position and not embarrass themselves or the team.
It actually goes back a lot further than that. We ourselves pioneered "Total football" in the English leagues when we won the 1st division in 59/60.

Also in the World Cup in Argentina they kicked Holland off the field but they also had the best No10 Mario Kempes who didn't need handball to score.

Don't recall it being that way. That was four years later and the Dutch side was good but not as good as the '74 side. Argentina were a good side too but again not as good as the one in England in'66 who were way ahead of England and but for the dubious sending off of captain, Rattin, would probably have won that World Cup.

That Argentina side was the best I’ve ever seen and Kempes was unbelievable.

Can I ask if there are any Burnley transfer rumours today or are they now put on another thread?

O'Hare from Coventry is seemingly close to happening.

Apart from that not much to report as far as I know anyway.

Sudden burst of McNeil interest, articles.
Newcastle, Crystal Palace, West Ham.

Downside is only £15m quoted! We should keep him at anything less than £25m

Don't come on the transfer thread for rumours Tom, you come here to be enlightened by the wisdom of the twelve apostles. I spent some time and foe'd all the usual suspects this morning and it does make reading the board much simpler and more enjoyable.

Strange that they had to manufacture a 6-1 win against a side with an Argentinian keeper. Holland were without Cruyff as he had received death threats. Good team but not great.
