Both of Everton's summer signings James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil - who have both joined from relegated Burnley - make their debuts.

We definitely need two. Neither Barnes nor Rodriguez have the mobility for this system.

Couldn't watch or listen to the game, just BBC and the thread. 71% possession and 11 corners but only one shot on target. What's the summary? Just needing a bit more time to gel? Who looked tasty?

Played well. Not as slick as last week, but the better team. Maatsen and Benson looked decent. Another good game from Costelloe. A bit of patience required all round. It's going to be a fun season.

Meh! Dominated two games and only two goals to show for it. We need a proven striker in.

We need to shoot on target more and get a top class striker in who has pace, shame Vydra has walked away think he would have done well in this passing system.

Is Kevin Long still on the books? Big, powerful CB with proven experience.
Before the game I was thinking that VK could do worse then give big Kev a run out against a big, strong Luton outfit. Horses for courses ;)

We look dangerous out wide and are comfortable on the ball but we are still not particularly creating many clear cut chances. Priority should be to find a "De Bruyne" type player to take Bastiens spot and a striker to replace Barnes.

We do look a little shaky at the back but that's as much the system as anything else, so I'm not sure signing another CB improves much in that area.

Costelloe, Benson and Maatsen the bright sparks today.

Some real positives to take from that. Luton will be top 6 again this season, they are very organised and effective.

I think we looked good just need a bit more quality in the final third

Are we playing 3-5-2 ? I think we are passing a bit too much at the moment need more through balls but it is a promising start and better than Dyche ball.

We needed to just shoot more first half. Lost count of the times we passed on chances to shoot from the edge of the area to overplay it looking to get in the box, we improved significantly on it second half but it was like we were afraid to shoot unless it was as close to goal as possible.

Just on way back in traffic.

Summary:

Dominated play, particularly second half - but struggled hugely in the first half with Luton’s height and athleticism.

We had LOADS of the ball but chances were rare - penetration was poor. For me it’s very clear that we need a minimum of one striker in, very quickly, as Barnes will not get the goals needed (useful asset still though). We also desperately need a centre back with HEIGHT to partner THB. I am talking 6’3/4 as it’s a struggle back there, and Taylor constantly shifts into his LB role by nature leaving THB quite exposed at times.

One shout from me - Adobayo up front for Luton. He’d suit this team down to the ground and I’m sure would jump at the chance to escape that side. At half time I was full of praise for Luton’s ability to stifle us and their own qualities, but second half they killed the game and any enjoyment entirely after we scored. It might sound hypocritical to complain as we definitely did this under Dyche ourselves, but it was bloody awful. Going down with endless injuries, boots falling off, taking forever with any ball off the pitch time and their bench holding on to the ball etc. They did what they had to do I suppose, but my God it was frustrating.

The slow start today cost us. VK needs to nip that in the bud, we need to start games off on the front foot. Not too disappointed as it is early doors and Luton know what they are doing in this league, but feel like 2 points dropped today.

I’m liking the ideas behind what we’re doing just need more shots on target and more crosses into the box, can’t we just offer Vydra a better wage sounds like he was going to have a wage reduction. I didn’t see benson as went out but maybe he can supply the right wing role?

Benson did exactly what I thought we needed against this Luton team- pace, energy, good runs stretching them and scaring them- but had little end product in the last third. He'll panic defences to create space and opportunity for others but might not have much direct goal involvement. We definitely still need 1 ideally 2 proper goal threats whether as centre or wide forwards.

It isn't about finding new players, although we do need a striker. These players are still learning the system, and each others 'games, give them time, they will only get better

Not sure about Costelloe, very good at finding space, but then not much esle. He has plenty of time to grow and develop, some great signs there, but for me we need better right now, Barnsey was isolated far too often. Also, same as everyone else, we are not mobile enough up top. Barnes couldn't stretch the line and so our wingers couldn't get in behind. We looked very poor from the many set pieces we won, but that partly could be down to the sheer size of that Luton team.

Still loads of positives. Maatsen is class. Benson looks very good, one drop of a shoulder and he is away. Brownhill getting on the scoresheet. Charlie Taylor did very very well with some lovely blocks. Knocking it about well and pressing well. We can only get better and better as we grow and develop.
