Hmmm. 5.8bn people out of 6.9bn (84%) around the world are thought to be religious and therefore believe in someone they can’t say they’ve physically met either. Personally I’m not religious but I don’t look on those that are as ‘weird’ - I can see their logic and respect their beliefs.

For me, one of the great things about our Queen was her ability to connect with people, despite how crazily challenging that is. Example - her calming words at Christmas on tv every year always felt like they had a personal touch, even though it’s impossible for her to literally do that when broadcasting to a nation. Another example, I’m sure there are many families who’s parents may have received a letter from her as they turned 100, again a personal touch.
I didn’t say believing in the queen was weird. I said feeling like you knew the queen was weird. She was one of the most private ‘famous’ people I can think of, how on earth can people feel like they knew her? They know practically nothing about her.

I wasn’t going to get into the religion debate, but people believing in a god that they have no proof exists is also weird. For me it’s on a par with believing in Father Christmas - and if I did people would think that was weird. People are free to believe what they want though so I’m not going to go out of my way to ridicule or criticise the beliefs of others. No doubt some will think some of my beliefs are weird which is completely fine.

This is what I am really struggling with and I mean it with sincerity. I am just struggling to relate the sorrow to a woman who I and millions others didn't know, has died.

I am not saying there is anything bad about either perspective, but no one has really explained why their is an emotional attachment.
if you are struggling to understand the devotion and emotion of people who have attachment to others they dont actually know. As unless you work for BFC most of the players are seen but not actually met by most fans.
I have met various players in person over the years and 2 came to my wedding in the 1980s but one of them has since died and another does not live in Burnley any more. Of the current squad the only one i have spoken to Is Ashley Barnes.
I say I love Burnley fc or at the least have an attachment of fealings to the club and its players. And hwen one has died and we stand to applaud or give silence I feel for there familys the loss as though I to had known them as family. 55 years a suporter 63 yrs a claret
I have changed my initial reply was to say obviously you are not a Burnley fan , but felt that was inflammatory. so removed that as it is not right to say it but I am hoping you get to understand that we can all feel attachments for persons or an entity we may not actaully meet or know

Trying to compare the royal family to BFC and its players, past and present is making the debate even odder.

Yeah kinda the same thing I was implying with the religion thing, people feel like they know their God.

Like I mentioned with my two examples, there are many ways that the Queen connected with people in this country (and around the world). While she may have been private, there is clearly a lot out there to know, she’s probably the most famous person in the world.

For me, it’s not that hard to understand the logic around who people may feel they ‘knew her’ and want to pay their respects.

And we laugh at North Korea when their citizens behave like this.

Not too sure what comparisons can be drawn with North Korea in the slightest tbh.

It’s apparent that there’s some extremely odd people that can’t grasp basic humane feelings, you don’t need to know somebody intimately to feel acute pain upon bereavement since the coronation just a few decades have happened.

When their leader or head of state passes away, we see footage of its citizens crying and wailing over someone they never met.

That's exactly what the media want us to see right now in this country.

There's a word for it ... Mournography.
