Re: Your assessment of the transfer window (incomings)
Not so much about the incomings (which for me have shown real intent and promise) but more about the way the club has not just thrown out what was good about what we were.
Sometimes when you need a culture shift in an organisation, the easiest option is to go for a systemic root and branch operation. Clear everything out and start again. However VK acknowledged what was good about Burnley when he came in and stated that he wanted to maintain that resilience and work ethic. That "in it together" mentalilty.
When the window started I could see like many others that we had to work to clear debt but still remain competitive. We knew the bigger players from last season were going to move on but even then it was scary watching the old guard leaving the building quicker than you could blink and a whole load of players that you had barely heard of.
However, VK has kept a core of what was right (Brownhill, Taylor, Roberts, Jay etc) including importantly Mike Jackson. He has looked at the youth and assessed what we/they need for the now and the future. He has coaxed the players remaining into an evolving system and he has already won over some doubters amongst our support about how he wants to play.
I am going for a 9/10. Ideally would have liked to have kept Max and Pope but that was always going to be next to impossible.
I loved what SD did for this club over his tenure and for me will always be a Burnley FC legend.
But I'm more excited about upcoming games than I have been for years.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think you are being slightly disingenuous about Watford. Of their gun players last season they've only really sold Dennis. They've sold a lot of padding and freed up a lot of money as a result. We've sold a lot of first team players - someone as balanced as Chris Boden described it last week as a "firesale". As for fees, I think generally as reported they're slightly under what we might have expected, certainly for Pope, and probably for others (e.g. McNeil) too. But overall, as I say, we've not done badly.RVclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 8:23 amNot sure I agree wIth this part. Watford have ‘sold’ more players than us for a start, so I don’t need to look far back (at all) to disprove your first point. As for the second part on fees received, an Athletic article today suggests we expect to receive 30m for Collins with clauses, I saw you mention the fee for him at 21m was low, but what about when it reaches 30? Most would agree 20m for McNeil was good business. Holding out for the full 17.5m for Cornet, despite clubs making funky below the belt offers? We’ve also held onto Brownhill despite top 10 PL interest.

Presume the reason we sold the likes of Pope and co for lower fees was due to the wages they would have been on in the Championship with us which would have been unsustainable.

You have to be impressed with the way unhappy players were moved out (some for good fees, some cheaply) and the wage bill was reduced. You have to like how we are performing on the pitch.
A few posters have pointed out the facts that we are reliant upon a few pre-existing players and loanees.
My worries are that:
1 - 33yr olds don't always make it through the season
2 - I still worry that well organised physical sides will punish us (set pieces in particular)
3 - Where is the market for resale of our young players? The Prem is where the money is at and they tend to like giants.
The business model has its flaws but we're still in a better place than when Dyche arrived. A lot to enjoy and be excited about. The transfer window has been far better than I ever anticipated it could be. 9/10, for me.

Re: Your assessment of the transfer window (incomings)
Think it's gone as well as expected. I was thinking at one point players like Dwight might have given it another season but hey ho.
I think we've got good money for Collins, McNeil and Cornet.
The worst deal of the window was Pope by a mile.
Tarks and Mee were out of our hands unfortunately. Also we finally got rid of the high wage earners who contributed very little.
As for incomings, I think that Harwood-Bellis, Cullen, Maatsen, Vitinho and Tella are all top end championship players.
Benson, Muric and Bastien all have bits to prove, but the signs are promising.
It's hard to make a judgment on Churlinov, Franchi , Zaroury, Dervisoglu, Beyer, Twine, McNally & Egan Riley but it's exciting to see how they fit into the system.
Considering we spent 20 million and recouped 70 million, have a 25 man squad of young promising talent and proven premier league players, and are starting to play really good football, this window can only ever be considered a success.
It is a good time to be a claret and I can't wait for each game to come around.

In my wildest dreams I could not have anticipated our activity in the window-particularly when you look at the inactivity and excuses from previous windows under SD. Well done to the Board for sanctioning and planning, to VK for identifying and being the catylyst in a lot of the new faces wanting to sign for a relegated club. But I would also like to thank the operational guys at BFC who did all the behind the scenes leg work in negotiations arranging flights and medicals and all the activity that takes place and for doing it seamlessly

We haven't seen the vast majority of the incoming play yet but I look forward to each and every game with a belief and optimism that I haven't had for a long time.

Going to be Christmas before I'll have a formed opinion!
So many new players.
VK & the coaching staff have done well to get us playing in the way he seems to want us to play, so quickly and, so well. Hopefully the best is yet to come.
But its no surprise Cork, Jay & Brownhill are figuring so prominently.

can't be anything but a 10 out of 10 when measuring against previous windows.

Re: Thank you Alan Pace
You'd hope, or at least l do, that was one of VKs preconditions in taking the job.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 9:01 pm.....or are we thanking Vincent Kompany for wrestling the recruitment from him and choosing the players?
Personally, I've never been in favour of Owners/ Chairmen buying players & then telling the manager to get on with it.

Re: Your assessment of the transfer window (incomings)
I think the likes of Tarks, Mee, Pope, McNeil and Cornet were always going to go if we had offers for them from Premiership teams. Bit disappointed about Collins but the money we got from him was excellent so a quick profit which allowed us to bring in so many players.
If we'd brought in a proven striker/goalscorer it would be a 10 for me otherwise it's a 9.5. Lots of promising younger players with pace, skill and enthusiasm and if VK can get them playing as a team like the last two games then we're in with a shout of promotion. We have plenty of cover for injuries and many options on the bench who can come on and change the game.
We've scored 10 goals in our last 3 games so maybe we don't need that striker. Could be a masterstroke by VK if we have 4/5 players all capable of scoring rather than one target man as a goalscorer. It's harder to cover 4/5 players than just one target man.
Really looking forward to the season with posession based attacking football and no VAR or prima donna big money signings diving all over the place. The Championship might not quite have the skilful players of the Premier League but IMO is more honest, more physical and better to watch.

Each week that passes the business looks better and better. I expected some players I thought weren’t up to it but more and more are looking like the real deal.
