Not to single out Swanson himself, but these kinds of eyebrow-raising contradictions are seen everywhere in those grubby, political, corrupt corners of life because some people convince themselves of the belief that it is more productive to work from within an organisation or system and shape the culture in line with your own will than it is to criticise from outside, but what actually happens, more often than not, is those people see a pile of cash and then reason their way to that belief. If you could draw a line from one point to the other, it would look something like this...

Their 'belief' (what they convince themselves of):

I can be a force for good--------------------work from within and effect change (for money)

The actual process:

Get offered money--------------------invent a belief that one's motives are pure

FIFA (when its administrators aren't taking back handers), like the IOC, projects the idea that it can have a positive influence in the world, to soften and bend other nations to the worldview of the western democratic market-capitalist countries who make up its most politically powerful members, but as we've seen with Infantino's fluffing of Putin during the 2018 World Cup, and now...this *waves hand open palmed across body*, we've actually seen a softening, a bending of FIFA, not of Qatar. Every person with a healthy degree of cynicism in their mind knows that the rhetoric is bull$hit. To quote Theodore Roosvelt's foreign policy doctrine, "speak softly and carry a big stick." Soft power has a place, yes, but the stick is more important. Has China improved its human rights record since the Olympics? Has Russia since it hosted the Winter Olympics and World Cup? No, because tyrannies like those only respond to force.

Erm, really sorry to pollute this thread, truly, everyone else please just ignore this post, but I've just noticed that I've been called out unprovoked by Jakubclaret on another now-locked thread on which I have not made one single solitary post (the benefits thread), and I feel I have a right to respond to that. (I didn't report the post, the thread was locked before I even read it). For the record, no, I'm not Imploding Turtle or anyone else for that matter, and no, I haven't been banned. I'd hazard a guess that the reason a lot of people have disappeared from here, or at least post much less frequently than in the early days of this site, is because people are fed up with the sort of low-intelligence that spats a very small number of people drag almost every thread down to.

He’s going with ITV. His defence of going out there for hundreds of thousands was because he could highlight the issues.

The shocking thing for me is that I can only assume that he still has a relationship with Russians from the last world cup because the only people to benefit from a ceasefire in Ukraine are the Russian government.

I don't understand how he can ask everyone to focus on the football and then make so many political statements.
