Worst referee we’ve ever had since Kevin Lynch?

Post by Milltown1882 » Sat Dec 17, 2022 5:01 pm

I’ve seen some bad ones over the years but the number of things he let go. Cullen could’ve been a red on him, Lenihan had to be a red, Roberts sent off for the ball hitting the bar. Can’t have been much worse surely.

Absolute shocker. He had zero control at any point in the match. Added on one minute in the first half despite there being at least 4 minutes of Boro time wasting. Tackle on Twine is a red all day long. Think it’s the liner that’s given the red and pen on Roberts.

I though he was consistently abysmal. To be fair the Linesman thought Roberts handled it and gave the instruction so he was even worse

Roberts clearly hand balled it. Other than that, all agreed.

not sure if you are on a wind up or haven't seen the replay - he doesn't get within a foot of the ball, it comes off the bar

He was dreadful, but KL is a pretty high bar.

Not sure what was shown on NBC, but I’ve literally just seen the replay on Sky. Roberts reaches around the defender and it hits his hand. It might well have also hit the bar prior to that.

Optical illusion on the linesman - no pen. However, Roberts silly action.

I saw it on Clarets +, they showed a replay from the goal line, he doesn't handle it or get remotely close to it. I've also just seen the same replay on Sky. He CLEARLY doesn't handle the ball

I thought he was excellent until the Boro penalty shout, it was outside the box for me. After that we scored very quickly, Boro players surrounded him and he lost the plot.

The red card is not the referee to blame but the Linesman who gave it and the referee then had to red card Roberts.
Webb kept the game flowing and May have made a couple of errors but there have been many poorer referees at Burnley in the last 2 seasons

Refereeing is a thankless job, so I don't usually complain too much, however.... what an appalling referee  . The lad has to go for the tackle on Twine... it was completely reckless. The red card that is given is also appalling. Roberts gets nowhere near it. Maybe one of the few instances where VAR would do a better job. That said VAR would have almost definitely given the pen against THB. If that's us I'm claiming a stonewall penalty all day long.
Just an abject performance from the officials today. We got the points. We move on. Roberts hopefully gets a reprieve. If so no harm.

Another ref could have given another 3 reds and a host of bookings but he let the game flow - unfortunately he let it flow with no concern for player safety, which is why he’s a strong contender for KL’s crown

I always find a good indicator of its a penalty is the reaction/appeal of the opposition.

There was none from the Boro players

I don't like wading in on referees and criticising them but yes today was very poor from start to finish. So many things he misjudged or got completley wrong. The assistant referees gave him little to no back up though either. Thankfully we got the three points and the red card should be rescinded.

He was weak, one of the weakest we’ve seen this season. For me, it started in first couple of mins, when Boro had a throw that went out on Bob Lord side, right next to corner flag by away end. The ref told the Boro fullback 3 or 4 times to get back to the corner, yet still allowed him to chuck it just shy of the 10 yard marker. Not much admittedly, but set the tone for me. Their keeper wasted so much time- even in the first half, and he took ages to book him in the second half even when it got silly.Fans pay hard earned money to watch games, and are getting increasingly short-changed due to time wasting. 90 mins? Sometimes I bet the ball isn’t rolling in play for 60.

I haven't seen the challenge, so not sure if it is a RC or a YC.
Just a small point of order as a ref (albeit at a much lower level!) "reckless" indicates a YC, "dangerous" is a RC.

What didn't help Roberts cause was that he deliberately tried to handle the ball, regardless of whether he made contact or not.

You can therefore understand why a penalty was given in realtime.

He started off falling for number 2's falling over routine every time, then suddenly decided to give nothing.

The three around thier box in the second half (Cork, Benson, can't remember who the other was) were all as blatant fouls as you will see.

Regarding the timewasting, fair play to him for booking the keeper with so long left. I've seen many refs let it go for much, much longer and even fail to give a yellow at all.

I thought that too but, would he give him another yellow if he had carried on wasting time ? Must admit I havnt seen a keeper sent off for time wasting.

Could have given him another before he took the goal kick. It would take a ref with big balls to book a keeper twice.

Having now seen the Roberts incident you can see how the ref got it wrong with Roberts bizarrely sticking his arm up towards the ball. Luckily, he should have the red rescinded

The referee was stood no more than 12 to 18 yards away from the incident and didn't give it. The linesman, stood at least twice as far away, with a less clear view decided to give it. And the referee decided to be guided by his linesman. Yes, the linesman made a mistake. But you cannot defend the referee for being persuaded by his equally inept linesman. It was ridiculous and was the ultimate demonstration of his lack of authority throughout the afternoon.

He did get the yellow card for the keeper correct for time wasting, seen worse not punished.

He was a shocker apart from that.

He was awful, but not helped by his liners.
The liner gave the penalty, and he should have had a better view. He also let JBG go when he shot straight at the keeper. JBG was at least 5ft offside.

Have a look at the replay, he was about 5ft ONSIDE.

Exactly this.
Referee is in charge and clearly saw no handball, but allowed himself to be overuled by someone who had a much worse view and was much further away.
100% the referee culpable.

I think criticising the ref because he didn't book someone for something that didn't happen, is a bit OTT!

I also think we got lucky, the ref could have easily given a penalty when their lad entered the box and went over, not sure if he was tripped although it looked like it from my position. I think the incident wasn’t long after they’d scored.

I said during the game that this referee seems to bottle the big decisions by just not giving them and then gets most of the easier decisions wrong. Not good attributes for a referee.

He was a shocker. Didn't seem to show any consistency in the decisions he gave/didn't give and bottled all the big decisions.

I also think we got lucky, the ref could have easily given a penalty when their lad entered the box and went over, not sure if he was tripped although it looked like it from my position. I think the incident wasn’t long after they’d scored.
It was outside the box, but with his incompetence he could have given it.
