Hidden Figures - Brilliant film about the racist attitude within NASA at the time of moon missions. Kevin Costner's character portrayal is top notch.

The Accountant - Proper violent in places but a good watch.

Hadn’t heard of this film. Just checked it out. Sounds grim.
Never seen it

But reading about what happened in Belorussia (in fact anywhere on the Eastern Front in WWII) is very grim

Good thread a few of the top of my head I've seen recently.

Wings Of Desire-set in the ruins of post-war Berlin and starring Peter Falk probably Wim Wenders masterpiece.

Hear My Song- early 90's comedy featuring Ned Beatty and a youthful Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbitt prior to his Cold Feet days.

Her Smell-starring Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid's Tale fame as an ageing female rocker battling alcohol addiction trust me it's not as depressing as it sounds.

Celia-one I recall vividly from the 80's as a youngster the tale of a young girl during the 1950's rabbit scare in Australia.

Finally a couple of Jessie Buckley ones I highly recommend.

Beast.

Wild Rose.

By no means am I saying these 2 are the best films ever made and they are not my favourite films either but think they fall into the category of the OP.
Peanut Butter Falcon
Honey Boy

Both starring Shia LaBeouf - the second one an autobiographical look at his own life as a famous child actor.
If you haven’t seen either give them a watch as they are not what you would expect.
I saw Honey Boy a few weeks ago definitely worth a watch I agree.

Seems pretty autobiographical to me.
Quite sad and disturbing if so.

Was just scrolling down to suggest Local Hero - I always had a thing for the western Highlands, astronomy and good music so it ticked all my boxes.
Finally caught that recently not much happens in the movie yet it's still a great relaxing watch, Fulton Mackay is especially endearing and a complete contrast to his Porridge persona.

The scenery alone is what makes that movie not to mention the famous phone box.

I never realised Peter Capaldi featured in Local Hero either surprising what you see people in.

Some good recommendations here.

Aguirre is indeed very...interesting. Can't say I'll watch it again but I'm glad I've seen it if that makes sense.

I've had Mulholland Drive spoiled (I get the impression the twist is very famous). Is it still worth watching if you know the twist? I just don't want to commit to two and a half hours if the whole film hinges on the thing.

Amadeus is a film that is about two million times better than it had any right being, but nobody I know has seen it. That's the kind of thing I'm looking for.
Watched it back in the 80s and thought it was brilliant, I don't think it's aged well. I found it very cringey when I tried to watch it recently.

If you like Jean Reno (Leon) 22 bullets falls into the lesser known category, based on a true story.

A film I saw last year which I thought didn’t get much attention & I very much enjoyed is “Another Round”
A Danish language film therefore subtitled, but if you don’t mind subtitles well worth watching.
Stars Mads Mikkelson (James Bond-Casino Royale) as a middle aged, stuck in a rut teacher and his 3 high school teacher friends. They discover a theory by some physiologist that humans are born with not enough % alcohol to blood in order to perform to their optimum level so decide to try out this theory by drinking during their working day just enough to increase their alcohol to blood level and monitor the results. Funny, heartwarming & a sad film in places.

Yep agree on both. Tyrranosaur disturbing and dark but great British cast and Peter Mullan is just brilliant in that film (as he is in everything)

Transsiberian and Kingpin both with Woody Harrelson are good films. Bill Murray in Kingpin is very very funny !

Very good call for "Don't Look Now". The thread title is essentially irrelevant as it has brought up some great recommendations. But if I take it literally I wouldn't say "Mulholland Drive" is forgotten.

However, "Don't Look Now" IS largely forgotten. I saw it over 40 years ago. Great acting (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie), excellent story and directing (Nicolas Roeg). It's a thriller largely set in Venice. I won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil it.

"Paths of Glory" is undoubtedly one of the best war films of all time, quite possibly the best WW1 film, arguably Kirk Douglas' finest film and one of Kubrick's best films.

'Blue Velvet', mentioned earlier, one of my all time favourites. Speaking of David Lynch though, I watched his original Dune today, which is pretty terrible.

'Don't Look Now' is also a great film.

Apologies if they don't fit the theme of the thread, but if you enjoy lengthy bio-pics then the following I would recommend.

Catch Me If You Can, based on the life of notorious fraudster Frank Abagnale Jr, and starring Di Caprio and Hanks.

Peterloo- Mike Leigh feature that recounts the 1819 massacre at Peterloo, Manchester, which for those who aren't aware was a rally demanding parliamentary reform at the time.

Resistance- Tells the story of how mime artist Marcel Morceau smuggled hundreds of Jewish children out of Nazi Germany during World War II, Jesse Eisenberg stars among others.

Tolkien- as the title suggests it's about the early life of the famous author, and how his experience in the war-time trenches of World War I inspired his later works, Nicholas Hoult and Lily James take the lead roles.
