Christmas decorations

Post by No Ney Never » Mon Jan 02, 2023 7:31 am

Once I left them up in the first week of January, they looked so out of place when I returned home from work.
Today they go back in the box 'til December.

Mrs took ours down on the 27th, think she was trying to punish me for getting in late on Boxing Day by having me up and down to the loft and taking external lights down.

It was a little depressing and early really, felt like it was all over when I’m sure a few more days wouldn’t have hurt

January 5th = 12th night according to my phones calendar but... some call Epiphany 12th night as that was when the 3 magi visited the baby Jesus (allegedly 😉)

The Mrs takes them down on 12th night every year (she takes the decorations down too 🤭🤭🤭)

Took ours down yesterday. My wife doesn't like them hanging around too long. I did suggest that we kept the nativity scene in situ as the 3 wise men hadn't got to Bethlehem yet, and we didn't want them getting lost, but sadly that didn't work.

Usually first week in January.

The people who take them down early are usually the ones who’s got them up before December. Putting Xmas decorations up super early is psychotic behaviour.

Ours come down today -2nd Jan. Always felt New Year’s Day is the last day. Know some who take them down 27th :o but that seems too soon…..6th seems to long to us, but each to their own I guess.
More important is the 3 points tonight UTC

Mine were down before New Year. Too much clutter for my liking. They have nothing to do with New Year anyway.

Up on the first day of Advent (27th November 2022) or 1st December on years where that comes first, and down on Twelfth Night (6th January).

In war torn Ukraine the tradition is to take them down on Candlemas, the 2nd of February (and same for most of the Eastern Orthodox Church) which is the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple (and the purification of the Virgin Mary 40 days after the birth)

The late Queen used to take hers down on Feb 6th (the anniversary of her fathers death

given that so many put them up so early now I understand the desire to be over with them - I used to be a strict Christmas Eve to 12th Night type but tree tends to go up about a week before now and then comes backdown on the 12th night - the natural wreath on the door stays until it is done for, which can be as late as early Feb which I kind of enjoy given the old traditions, but Candlemas is as far as I allow.

Down they come today, a proper ball ache of a job, even worse than having to put them up.

I've just performed the annual trick of getting the 7' spiky bugger into the wheelie bin. It was especially dry this year so wasn't too much of a major task with a decent saw.

Outside lights done this morning followed by inside, inside we have very little so it all only takes a short while to complete the job. Inside suddenly looks bare though.
