I prefer drinking at home. It's cheaper, everything I need is here, and it's not full of annoying people!

Re: Price of a pint of beer
Costs are rising for both breweries and pubs/bars.
You can go into the Bridge and pay over £5 a pint. You can go into the Big Window and pay less than £3
The drink you get will be massively different in quality and when you are out for 5-6 pints then its only £10 -12 more over the session so I would usually prefer a better quality of beer if that is available.
Im all for value for money but I also like to support those establishments that look to offer decent and quality beers.

My first pint at Uni in 1962 was 1s/6d or 7.5p
Mind you my board and lodgings was £3.50p per week
No idea what the average wage was in those days but
Haynes at Fulham was about to get rather than earn £100/week

That's a fine drink.
I also think some pubs deliberately try to "price out" certain types of drinker.

Re: Price of a pint of beer
I know folk that drink in the big window before the match because it’s cheap, they’re only having 3-4 beers before a game and are probably saving £4 a session over a decent pint to drink absolute pishclarethomer wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 7:50 pmCosts are rising for both breweries and pubs/bars.

Re: Price of a pint of beer
On a recent trip to Manhattan NY a pint was typically 12 dollars ( £11.40) around Times Sq but upon walking around I found it was around $5 in Hells Kitchen. I suppose in any City it will be more expensive around the tourist areas. Manhattan is scarily expensive though. I actually found that a beer was cheaper on Wall St. than Times Sq/Broadway.

Used to be a lot of decent pubs in Rawtenstall.
Often a 'Stop Off' for us on our way to the Turf, meeting old family friends. One of those friends was an ex landlord of the Bishop Blaize. Sad how pubs all over are closing down.

True, the place doesn't pretend to be something it isn't & when you accept it for what it is you aren't disappointed, whilst I was in there an hawker selling stolen stuff came in there & got told to sling their hook which I thought was funny, the place was ok for a cheap drink with speedy service.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 8:48 pmI know folk that drink in the big window before the match because it’s cheap, they’re only having 3-4 beers before a game and are probably saving £4 a session over a decent pint to drink absolute pish![]()

I know it's watered down John smiths etc isn't strong tackle at the best of times, but after you've finished queuing up at some places & manouerved past heaving bars with the spillages & ignored so many times by short staffed over worked bar staff you feel pretty much sober & short changed when you eventually taste it. Apart from drinking at home it's like a rock & a hard place wherever you go.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 9:29 pmTbf I sound a bit of a snob saying that. Re: Price of a pint of beer
I dont drink much beer as prefer my spirits but don't minder a beer or two in the summer. In Leeds we have this brilliant new imported one called Staropramen. I doubt you'll be able to get it in Burnley yet cos its very new to the UK but its a Polish beer so keep you eye out for it as its the best beer I've ever tasted.
Re: Price of a pint of beer
This type of comment tends to come from someone who has a couple of pints , if you get 10 down a few times a week it mounts up. If you prefer to pay over the odds for "real ale" that looks and tastes like dishwater then fair enough.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 9:29 pmTbf I sound a bit of a snob saying that. Still over the recommended amount, I would imagine, and binge drinking doesn't make it safer.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 9:58 pmThat's not a lot if he's drinking something like fosters Carling carlsberg green, a few is 3 over 7 days thats 30 cans it's only like 4 a night of weak 4% stuff.

There are though quite a few more microbrews and good bars in Rawtenstall now. More choice and better quality than a few years ago even if a few of the older pubs have goneBuxtonclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 9:11 pmUsed to be a lot of decent pubs in Rawtenstall.

I'm putting things in context 3 bottles of wine probably equates to the same amount but 30 looks far worse than 3 so that person must be an alcoholic we'll just forget the wine strength because 3s a smidgen number that sounds better, 1 person isn't an alcoholic the other person is.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 10:07 pmI doubt he is (does anyone?) but coming from someone who drinks in the big window, I would expect you to try and deserve beer monsters!![]()

Jennings was bought by Marstons a few years back and they did the usual. Close down the brewery and brew it in Burton, ruining the beer in the process. I used to love Sneck Lifter from Jennings but sadly it is nothing more than a memory now.Claretnick wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 6:18 pmYet another brewery closes and I didn't know Jennings in Cockermouth has also gone.

An alcoholic is someone who is drink reliant. If you're needing to down 10 pints "a few" times a week, then I'd say you were reliant.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 10:10 pmI'm putting things in context 3 bottles of wine probably equates to the same amount but 30 looks far worse than 3 so that person must be an alcoholic we'll just forget the wine strength because 3s a smidgen number that sounds better, 1 person isn't an alcoholic the other person is.

That’s stupid, unsurprisingly. 440ml isn’t a pint and the strength of wine and size of bottle is relatively uniform.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 10:15 pmI'm basing this on strong wine big bottles & weak lager 440ml cans, we can split hairs if you wish.

You've definitely got a case but can we transfer this to spirits & wines as well in fewer quantities but taking the higher strengths into account as well & if we do that a great number of the population are reliant & I'm not just talking about the lager drinkers.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Tue Jan 17, 2023 10:15 pmAn alcoholic is someone who is drink reliant. We are just assuming everybody's buying 500ml pint cans then which are sold as a 4 I've yet to come across them in case packs. 440ml are commonly sold in greater quantities.

Here's the NHS definition
Alcoholism, now known as alcohol use disorder, is a condition in which a person has a desire or physical need to consume alcohol, even though it has a negative impact on their life.
In the past, a person with this condition was referred to as an “alcoholic.”

The words he actually used were "get down" I don't have a clue about that said posters drinking habits but drinking 30 cans/pints a week sounds alot worse than casually drinking 4 cans of fosters after a hard days work every evening, I don't wish to argue as it's futile, good evening. It's easier to distort & misrepresent than actually breaking something down & thinking logically but let's assume he's on 30 pints of frosty jacks every week.

Anyone who drinks alcohol every day is alcohol dependant regardless of the quantity or quality.
All this 'after a hard day's work' to help me relax is just denial of having a problem.

Nonsense because it's widely recognised that binge drinkers are alcoholics they can go months without having a drink & all of a sudden bang for a week. Alcoholism is very complex the experts are at a loss how to diagnose alcoholism because it's varies so greatly drinker to drinker.

I never mentioned binge drinkers but specifically people who feel they MUST drink everyday, the majority of whom use relaxation as an excuse. Re: Price of a pint of beer
I drink in my local pub or local cricket club which offers both options but to be honest I drink because I enjoy a good pint, not because I need to get 10 pints down my neck every night like I did in my early 20’s, everyone’s circumstances are different.
Re: Price of a pint of beer
Canadian health authority is now recommending no more than 2 beers a week.
