Can’t mark as watched on TV but was a couple of times he maybe kept up with the action a little too closely! Should never be that close to play.
Also made a whopper of an error not letting Obafemi play on

From tv, woeful. Anyone falling down got a free kick. They’re keeper holding the ball for 20 seconds, especially in the last 20 minutes.
He was rubbish in a rubbish Aussie league, he’s not improved.

How is he so so poor? I thought his last match for us against West Brom might have been a one off. I was wrong. Awful!

From the TV, there were a few borderline yellow card fouls by Sunderland players in the first half on Tella, Zaroury and Benson, just a talking to. Cullen doesn’t seem to commit a foul, yellow card. Doesn’t seem to be a ref that allows a game to have a decent tempo.

When Sunderland hit the bar their player was at least two yards offside.

He was a nuisance, I'm not sure bad enough for 3's, but he was definitely a front of shop kinda ref rather than a back of house man.
Weird booking for Cullen. He had the yellow card out before he'd decided which way the foul went, which could have been either way, and I think a tackle on Tella about 20 minutes in should have been a yellow card for their player. Poor advantage, on the Obafemi incident but at least he owned up to that and did a bit of a mea culpa.
But he was just kind of in the way a lot. Not so much that he had to dodge our passes, but it seemed like we had to play around him in their half quite a bit. Probably the worst positioning you can do without being marked down by your assessors.
We didn't not win because of him, and I'm not sure we'd have won with a different ref, so he had no real bearing on the game, but he was, I dunno, waspish in his involvement.

Not seen them back yet, but can't believe the Cullen yellow card nor the one he didn't give O'Nien early doors.

And neither could the female assistant. She was constantly 5 yards behind the play, and therefore unable to flag for offside at least 3 times second half. Awful officials.

The guy has been inexplicably parachuted in from a b-list league, straight into the top group of refs in the country.
If that doesn't tell you how low standards are here, nothing will. Man has zero idea about football.

I've just looked back at some decisions.
I think both Neil and Hume should have been yellow carded in the early part of the game and can't believe O'Nien wasn't - then he cards Cullen which is just downright ridiculous.

I’m sure he’ll be watching the game back himself when he gets home while marking himself a 10. Put on the other thread a ref who wants to be the ‘star of the show’.

Stick to Aussie Rules mate.
Noticed on 2 occasions the lino in the 2nd half on the Bob Lord side, put his flag up for a throw in AFTER the ref had pointed which way !

Didn't produce the card at least twice in the first half when it was glaring, gave fouls for any kind of physical challenges and then carded Cullen for something I wasn't sure was even a foul! Also stopped play to give us a free kick when Obfemi was breaking down the wing. He was very poor overall I felt.

Poor referee IMO
On at least 3 occasions in first half Burnley players had wrestled clear of shirt pulling aggressive challenges and had an opporunity to launch an attack and each time they were simply "dropped" before the pass could be made. No yellow cards. I said at the time if a Burnley player had done that it would be an immediate yellow. Come the second half an innocuous challenge for the ball where each player seemed to be equally to blame and Cullen gets a yellow! Tella deserved his TBF. The Obafemi incident where he shrugged off a sliding tackle a shirt pull and had broken the press and was running clear put the tin lid on for me. Mr Gillett blew and ensured the attack failed to progress. The whole Sunderland team got behind the ball again and I think one of them kicked the ball away as well. Joke

He was poor, but for balance he also made several correct decisions in Sunderlands favour which had half our fans screaming bloody murder. It's almost as if we're a bit biased or something.

Lost all credibility early on when he didn't book the guy who went right through the back of Tella. Then he became ridiculous booking Cullen. Fair enough yellow on Maatsen who could easily have seen red for that dumb challenge, brought about most likely by frustration.

Set his stall out early on when allowing players to continue to foul without being booked. I know he's an Aussie but is he a new 'golden boy' in the refereeing fraternity? Got a lot to learn if he is. Sunderland played him well for their point but once more this season on view was an extremely low level of competency. Anyway, his family and friends saw him on television so something good came out of it.

Not sure.
If he'd carded a couple of their defenders in the first 20 mins - and he should have carded at least one, then they would not have felt they had the license to continue putting in some fairly reckless physical challenges all night. He gave us nothing in any of the physical one on ones.
Had he set his stall out differently from the outset then we might have played rather better.
As it was, I agree that we only deserved a point.

When Gillett ref’d here in Oz , he was a bit of a show-pony. Any foul, he’d have the card, yellow or red out in a spilt second. He’d then run over the the player receiving it, holding it above his head. You could see he enjoyed it. A previous ref, about 10 years younger was the same. I would bet on these two every game to produce a red card. I had a few nights out on the strength of it.
Part way through a season about 6 years ago, betting companies stopped doing card markets on these two.

This is interesting… a Sunderland fan review on his performance, describing it as ‘excellent’
Goes completely against the general tone on here you’d have to say.
https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2023/4 ... erformance
A few comments on the related twitter thread:
‘An excellent summary

Jarred Gavan Gillett an Australian football referee in the PL following the announcement on 3 Aug 2021 that he had been promoted to the Select Group referees list. Have they got any more they can give us?’
‘That’s the difference between PL and Champ referees. And it’s massive. Like the players I guess.’
‘His performance should be shown to every referee in the country whatever association they belong to.It was a solid no nonsense display and the best I’ve seen since the pop eyed bald Italian guy.sorry for the rudeness I don’t remember his name’

As has been said many times before, if they think that was a good performance, it shows how poor standards are.
