Will we ever witness a season like this again

Post by tiger76 » Tue Apr 11, 2023 8:04 pm

I highly doubt it, VK coming in and bringing much needed positivity after relegation.

A whirlwind summer transfer window when it was difficult to keep track of all the comings and goings.

Then after a relatively slow start as players settled in, bar the amazing 1st half at Huddersfield, we've been unstoppable for months, and even opposition managers are routinely stating we are one of if not the best ever Championship side.

Every time we've faced a challenge we've shown the resilience to regroup and immediately bounce back in the following game.

The stats are there for all to see.

Heading for one of the biggest Championship points hauls ever.
Scored the most, conceded the least.
Barely lost a game all season.
10 successive wins equalling the Championship record.

But what's been really transformative is the manner in which we've achieved all these landmarks.

Muric playing on the halfway line quite often must have given a few traditionalists grey hairs, not to mention his passing to either flank, or even going longer if required.
Beyer with his driving runs, and he possesses a handy shot as well given the opportunity, THB spraying long range passes with accuracy.
Maatsen, Roberts & Vitinho marauding down the flanks must have given opposing full backs sleepless nights.
Ditto Benson, JBG & Zaroury on the wings, it's been a long time since we've witnessed genuine wingers we can get you on the edge of your seat.
The engine room of Brownhill, Cork & Cullen in midfield ensuring we controlled the tempo of games.
And last but by no means least, Barnes & Jay being reinvigorated, plus Tella scoring goals for fun, including 2 quickfire hat-tricks in the space of a couple of weeks.

Yes we are playing in the Championship, but VK and this squad have brought the fun back, and the buzz is back again.

It seems bizarre but if there was ever a good relegation then last May was it. that allowed us to clear the decks and rebuild with younger players who can hopefully only improve under Kompany's tutoring.

Next season will obviously provide much sterner tests, but with sensible recruitment no reason why we can't at least cement a mid-table berth.

Whatever next season does bring good and bad, this campaign will rightly live long in the memories of any Clarets.

Thanks Vinny Kompany, and keep up the sterling work. :)

A special season no doubt......but the '59'/'60 season when everything depended on the final day... topped the lot.

There will probably never be another, where we all think we will win - every match!

In May the club and their fan base were on their knees which has helped make this transformation even more incredible. Pace & Kompany-we salute you

The reality is probably not. That’s why even though it’s become routine now in savouring every bloody minute of it.

So lucky to have witnessed this. Two defeats all season. Unbeaten in 20 games. It’s remarkable

It is extremely rare at any level that a team goes thru a 46 match season with just 2 losses. That would be remarkable if we can do it. To put it into context. Rovers who are in the play offs have already lost 16.

A truly incredible season when you consider where we were at a year ago. Don’t think I’ve quite processed it properly yet.

Only after the event will we truly appreciate it. Some memorable games. And days.

What Roy is essentially saying is yes it is possible to witness seasons that can be compared with this again - he has, I an guessing, witnessed at least 3 (including this one) that have been exceptional (it would be fairly natural for him to place winning the top flight as the best of the bunch), his family through the generations have seen even more which they have recounted directly to him. In many ways Roy is one of our only remaining living connections to those who witnessed our first great teams, what he shares should be treasured by all of us.

It's hard to predict because football is changing all the time, yes this season is special because of how we brought in a new manager with no experience over here and bringing a squad together in and playing the football we haven't been accustomed to which as been a pleasure to watch.

I was thinking about this the other day with sadness for those Clarets who passed away recently and who didn't get to experience the euphoria of this season

The trains were plentiful and on time, making the journey down there very
pleasant ! I'll remember that occasion 'til my dying day. ;)

But he was and he has a right to his opinion. I was not quite old enough to see it but I was a Claret even then. As brilliant as this season has been nothing, absolutely nothing, tops being champions of your country. Winning the league and finishing above the likes of Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, City and, most importantly at the time, Spurs is nothing short of phenomenal and only those who remember it can really grasp how great it was. Playing in the cup final, quarter finals of the European cup when only national champions were allowed in it (not teams who finished 4th) as well as being league runners up were unbelievable times for a club our size.
Yes this season has been pinching yourself brilliant but don’t knock someone who has seen far better for speaking his mind.
