Price of living these days.

Hey guys ,

So with everything going through the roof in relation to cost, I was just wondering how everybody affords to watch the clarets home n away.

Personally we are a small family , both of us working full time good jobs etc. Mortgage to maintain amongst other bills to ensure everyone is safe and warm.

We try to commit to one good holiday per year, or as many as finances allow.

I personally have been on limited games whilst growing our family . But can wear the multipart shirt and the rise through the leagues up until the end of Stans reign with attendance pride.

It wows / pleasures me to see such good attendances at the turf . I’d love to be able to take my nipper home and away like my Dad did for me.

I just don’t see how I can achieve this. I know hols/travel are a thing . However we’ve really found travel broadens the mind as they say.

Anyway how do u achieve it guys?

I go on the JM Lower with my son and have season tickets. We pay for them by Direct Debit on the interest free plan. Not increased in price significantly for 10 years. Probably the best value spending that we do. About £27 pm for me and £8 pm for my son.

Individual matchday prices can work out expensive for a family but you get the value of the season tickets, especially the £55 for u12 in the JM stand.

Away days are expensive, which is why we have to pick and choose which we go to, but that just makes them all the more special, especially when their first one is like Wigan away this season

It’s all about balance for me. Football is a big part of my life and I go to games for a number of reasons. I’ve been to every home game and 10 away games this season, which is probably my lowest % of away games (pandemic seasons aside) since I was 17.

I’m 32, and I’ve got a 1 year old son who obviously doesn’t know the difference between Manuel Benson pinging one in the top corner and Thomas and His Friends going on another big world, big adventure journey. So my priorities have shifted in the last 18 months, as have my costs.

I’ve got a lot of loyalty points so am privileged enough that I can, by and large, pick and choose my games.

My partner and I both have pretty decent jobs. We’ve got a mortgage which is due a hefty upturn in cost if interest rates stay the same, in October next year so priorities will change again but I will ensure that I budget to take in 7-10 away games next season because it’s a part of my life that keeps me sane.

Personally I would prioritise that over a lavish holiday at the moment but as my boy gets older, I’ll likely prioritise again…by which time I’m hoping I’ll have taken the next step in my career to offset the cost.

It’s each to their own; you’ve just got to get enjoyment out of life and I find a nice mixture of all those things works for me.

I've missed a few away games this season, mainly for financial reasons. I'm a single lad living on my own and this winter is the first time I've really had to properly cut back on things that I wouldn't have done before.

I think Eddiebfc has the best suggestion. I have always had season tickets and take advantage of the early bird discount,when my vhildren were younger, the Turf never sold out so you could always get them tickets for a few games.

Some people save by buying under the counter stuff & if you make a pouch last you a week it isn't that much, I agree shop bought fags by a heavy smoker you would be spending.

Tend to do all the cup games with them (when its the cheap tickets) and they share the one S/T

Done two away games with both (inc Middlesboro which was obviously brilliant for both) and I think six with one

I’ve changed my going on matches a lot over the past few years since moving away from the area - I would do every home game and quite a few away.

I’ve done about 10 home games a season due to having a young child and the 2nd little en has just arrived so I’ll probably stick around that level for now. I’ve offset the cost of living rises by swapping jobs and earning more money but I’d rather the wife didn’t go back to work til the little en’s are in school so some sacrifices will have to be made but with my income we should be alright without major changes. I’ll still get onto any matches I want to go on and we’ll probably get a decent family holiday every year and a few smaller breaks away too. As the kids get older I’ll more than likely start going on a few more matches and take them along too when they’re “old enough”.

Weird times because I was baffled with the shopping bill last week and asked “what have we actually bought?” Because it’s genuinely about double what we usually spent without any of the luxuries. We’re in a position where we can afford it without too much hassle thankfully but I did wonder how a lot of people are actually coping with all the increases. I can see a lot of people struggling over the next year or so for sure!

One pint a week, never smoked. Only ever get Sky/Netflix/Spotify etc under offers. Shop at Aldi. Often buy their cheaper range. Try to be cautious with petrol consumption. Run rather than do short drives. Try and put money aside each month after Christmas and then pay for my season ticket out right to enable me to prioritise on family stuff…always tricky as car needs mot and service at the same time!! I've managed one away game, which was Reading and that's because it's just down the road

Got a ticket for our final game Vs Cardiff.

I've not really considered many games this season, I had a holiday to San Fran at Xmas and other stuff going on so put my time and money into those things.

May try for more next season but it's no panic for me

it’s not cheap, especially the long distance away days. cost me around £250 a trip for me and my two kids. i won’t be doing as many next season to concentrate on finishing jobs on my house

Highlight was spending 20 minutes with Sam Vokes in the Worsley Park Marriott when we came up for the Luton game in August. Wycombe were at Bolton. What a legend and such a nice bloke.
I've seen his personalised plates on his Range Rover outside a house he rents in Marlow, so we chatted about that amongst other things. I don't think he thought I was stalking him!..

Wife hated Hartlepool.

Then I managed pilgrimages, first and last at Turf Moor and any big match mid season.

As finances improved. So did my away distance and matches.

Now given up most aways, owing to having to stand.

We worked out we’d be about £200 better off a month if she went back to work (after nursery fees etc) …. Which equates to me doing the odd day overtime here and there. So it was a no brainer really for her to stay off and spend the time teaching the kids Burnley songs.

There is a limit to how much you can cut back, where do you go when you've cut back all you can and prices still rise?
Your ability to at the very least maintain your standard of living will never be achieved by cutting back, it only comes from increasing your income.
Your time is best spent not working out how to spend less, but earning more.

Some years ago (2003?) A whole gang of us went to Rome for the very first England/Italy 6-Nations rugby game; it was and usually still is, the nearest weekend to Valentine's Day - that year it was bang-on. The wife and I both found it hilarious when one of the other girls first discovered - we were by then in the airport! - that this was to be more than just a 'romantic weekend away. That said, the vibe at those games in Rome is very different to any other rugby internationals, with far more wives and girlfriends attending rather then the more usual lads' weekends away.
