The vast majority use it to either pay for goods/services or to withdraw cash from an ATM.

If you typed this on a smart phone or lap top you are probably using it yourself, so you can ask yourself.

Invented in 1907 so your numbers are the wrong way round or you are many decades out. If you are referring to bank cards then 1950s.

It's still a valid question even if the OP uses plastic themselves. You don't have to live a 100% plastic free life to wonder if we should cut back on our production and usage of it. It's incredibly difficult for your normal Joe to avoid it, but that doesn't mean they should just accept the status quo because nothing would ever get changed if that were the case. For example I'm guilty of using social media and scrolling on my smartphone, but I still question whether they're good for our brains.

Boss Hogg - Assume that you're referring to Bakelite? To the best of my knowledge the origins of plastic go back a lot further than that. Parkesine is/was the first plastic that I'm aware of which was invented in the 1860s. I used to work for a company that manufactured the plastic known as Xylonite which had its origins in the 1880s (although I wasn't around at the time!!! :) ). If you have any interest in plastics then the Bakelite Museum in Somerset is an interesting place.

Polythene, the most widely used plastic worldwide was invented in 1933 at the ICI laboratory in Nantwich, Cheshire.

From Wikipedia

"On 24 March 1933[3] two scientists conducted an experiment that produced polythene (polyethylene). Benzaldehyde was reacted with ethene (ethylene) at 2,000 atmospheres pressure. Sir Michael Perrin worked with this group of scientists from October 1933 until 1938.[4] In December 1935 he conducted an experiment that allowed polythene to be created. Polythene is the world's most widespread plastic."

Even the new banknotes are made from Polymer which is a thin very flexible plastic. So whether you pull out the credit card or a wad of notes, it’s all made from plastic.
