Re: Ashes Thread 2023
I always thought Leach getting injured was (sorry to be harsh) a ‘blessing in disguise’ - Moeen providing two very important wickets.
Need another wicket like now but Broad/Robinson/Jimmy should have enough discipline to clean the lower order/tail up

Moeen will concede more runs but he’s far more likely to take wicketsCoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 4:45 pmI always thought Leach getting injured was (sorry to be harsh) a ‘blessing in disguise’ - Moeen providing two very important wickets.

Re: Ashes Thread 2023
First time in many years I've sat down and taken in a session of top class cricket.......and, suffice to say, I'm mightily unimpressed. The very thought of Jim Laker, Tony Lock, Trueman or Statham playing with "Cinch" on the front of their shirts is beyond comprehension......The biggest disappointment has to be our very own James Anderson, he now looks like a player who has been there too many times, going through the motions, perhaps time now to take his place on the Longside with the rest of us.

Last thing I want to be is harsh on our own man.....but, even though the line and length was as immaculate as ever, the prospect of a breakthrough looked a million miles away.......Maybe just been there, seen that, one time too many ?

Bairstow is nowhere near good enough to keep wicket at this level but we’ve opted to get him in because of his runs. Two crucial mistakes today though with the missed stumping and the dropped catch.JarrowClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 5:32 pmIt is so frustrating knowing our best keeper
Is sat with Surrey but Bairstow has proved that he must play it is just how do we fit him and Foakes in?

Not defending Bairstow's quality at this level and he has made two mistakes today costing two wickets but he also did a superb catch from Broad to get out Labuschagne, just to balance things a little perhaps.

It’s a tough one - Brook been on fire since debut and I don’t want to push Root up to third to drop Pope to make way for Foakes if we kept Bairstow for exampleClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 5:36 pmBairstow is nowhere near good enough to keep wicket at this level but we’ve opted to get him in because of his runs. Foakes isn’t a complete slouch with the bat mind… you could argue that the extra dismissals would mitigate any difference in batting contributions or actually prove to be more beneficial…

Any professional wicket keeper would have caught that. Most wouldn't have made it look so difficult.claretburns wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 5:42 pmNot defending Bairstow's quality at this level and he has made two mistakes today costing two wickets but he also did a superb catch from Broad to get out Labuschagne, just to balance things a little perhaps.

The Jordan Pickford of wicket keeping.
Makes catches look far harder than they actually are.

Re: Ashes Thread 2023
Can’t imagine a top class keeper wouldn’t have taken that to be fair. If he’s good enough to play as a batsman then play him but he’s not a test wicket keeper.claretburns wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 5:42 pmNot defending Bairstow's quality at this level and he has made two mistakes today costing two wickets but he also did a superb catch from Broad to get out Labuschagne, just to balance things a little perhaps.

Re: Ashes Thread 2023
Game of missed opportunities so far for England.
Quite a few got themselves in with the bat but didn’t push on.
Missed chances to take wickets with the drop, missed stumping and no ball.
I’ve been disappointed with Ali so far. If we are going to set attacking fields you can’t over pitch as much as he did.

Agreed about his keeping but we did the same with Russell back in the day, it just so happens that Stewart actually developed into a fine keeper where as Bairstow and Butler never truly developed their keeping further sadly.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 5:36 pmBairstow is nowhere near good enough to keep wicket at this level but we’ve opted to get him in because of his runs. Foakes must play for me along with Bairstow but that leaves a very tough decision to make on who we drop, I would guess at either pope or Crawley but is then how we rejig the order Brooke’s at 3 maybe or push all up 1 but we know Root doesn’t want to be 3 and is better at 4 anyway very hard choice.

Re: Ashes Thread 2023
I don't think you can blame "mr do no wrong " for missed stumping , dropped catch and no balling ! You should always play a specialist wicket keeper instead of a make shift . Bairstows average for England is 37 , Foulkes is 32 . Bairstow should be in the squad as a batter and backup keeper .

It is a tough decision but selectors (should) always have tough decisiond to make. 3 big errors from Cymbals….. probably in deficit now for impact in this test.
Pitch is pretty slow, dry and dead in the main. Edgbaston has lost its edge maybe?

Yeh I think they got the bowling attack wrong as well this is not a pitch for Anderson to bowl and I don’t get the point of playing both him and Broad together anymore for me it should be 1 or the other not both together now, Woods extra pace would have been helpful on the his pitch.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 6:27 pmIt is a tough decision but selectors (should) always have tough decisiond to make. Re: Ashes Thread 2023
Doubtless Bairstow, and not the selectors will take the biggest portion of flak for today's damp squib performance.
Yesterday, predictably, his was heralded as a wise and bold selection..and today the chickens came home to roost.
The reality is that playing with a part-time keeper has a draining and ultimately demotivating effect on the team...not just the bowlers.
It's a bad selection (imo) if not a total copout and needs to be rectified ASAP. You can pontificate till doomsday about who plays where, but this team needs a proper keeper and quick. If, and that's a matter opinion, Bairstow is deemed a test class batsman, then he plays as a batsman. If not he should be out.

Think the pitch should take most of the blame if there is blame to give about today not sure this is what they asked for but also the bowler selection is questionable as well in my opinion. Anyway JB is a must for the team at the minute but agreed only as a batter, he was simply sensational before his injury:fatboy47 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 7:15 pmDoubtless Bairstow, and not the selectors will take the biggest portion of flak for today's damp squib performance.
