We’ve had twelve months plus of ‘un-Burnley-like’ to perhaps start not being quite so surprised by events at the club.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The downside worst case of the Trafford deal is a combination of relegation and a sale at, say, £5m if he flops.
The upside is massive. Say he gets into the England squad - at his age he would be worth £30m+ in that eventuality, City’s sell on is big but still less than we would bank as a profit. Then we get the league position improvements and possibility of Europe compared to a lesser keeper. I assume the City buy back has to be at least £30m or there is no incentive for us.
So on balance while £10m feels closer to true value I’m not baulking at the £14m plus extras.

No idea if any truth
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Regarding the Trafford signing. He is obviously a talented lad, but this does seem a strange deal to me.
No offence to the lad, but he hasn’t even played Championship football yet, let alone prem footy so how we’ve arrived at this fee seems bizarre to me.
Having said that, Brighton have just spent similar money on Verbruggen who’s only had 1 season in Belgium!?!?

I think it could be a percentage thing. failing to hold the ball in front of goal isn't worth the riskTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 5:42 pmNot a keeper but I feel they catch the ball less since they started wearing padded pillows on their hands.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The fee quoted is more than just a head scratcher - it seems a bit crazy based on the lad's playing history
As does the fee for the young kid from Dortmund who also has little more experience
It's ok to buy for the future but this season starts next month and we still need to spend on LB, CM, Wide and Striker
Just hope we have reasonable funds available

Surely we can get Maatsen on loan?
Not ideal, but we can't really shell out £25 million on him

You’d think a loan suits all parties really. Issue is Chelsea delaying the deal as Poch might want a good look at him in pre-season.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:30 pmSurely we can get Maatsen on loan?

He has one year left, doubt they’ll loan him unless he signs a new deal.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:30 pmSurely we can get Maatsen on loan?

We’d be best trying to loan Gomez and then Chelsea would know we’re not desperate. Could easily save us the money on Gomez’s wages/loan fee just by putting us in a better negotiation position.

A loan would be great if we could tie him up at the end of it.

Maatsen for £25 million?
Maybe with addons and an agreed fee around £15 million

I wouldn't go more than 15 including add ons for Maatsen

Unless we are taking out even more loans where are we getting the money to pay for the players at their prices?
Hopefully not against future PL earnings.

Why not? That's kind of what the PL is about. They don't give the money away like some sort of gift to the chairman.

Just read that, didn’t know. Although he doesn’t rule out a move, just says he plans to give his all in pre-season and prove he deserves more minutes.
Guess it depends what Pep tells him his chances will be. Wouldn’t rule it out but yes, sounds a lot less likely. Sigh.

Really? I think 14m for one of the most highly rated u21 keepers in the world could be a snip in a season or two.
Edit - perhaps you were meaning Maatsen, apologies - yeah, 20-25m seems daft.

If Add ons are realised Trafford will be the tenth most expensive keeper in football history.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 8:20 pmI think I heard this correctly, the 17th most expensive 'keeper ever.![]()
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Maatsen is definitely too expensive at £25m, if indeed that report is to be believed.
I must say I trust VK and the team implicitly, but I am slightly concerned that the headline fees that are out there (I know we don't pay them all in one go) for Couilbaly and Trafford could come back to haunt us. The perception will be that we've overpaid and other clubs will want a slice of that when we come knocking again.
I trust that there is a plan in place, and sufficient funds, to strengthen those areas that really need attention. To my mind we still require as a minimum players who can start straight away in the following positions:
1 left back
1 central midfielder of a defensive nature
1 winger
1 striker

If the add one are realised it’s highly likely that not long after he will be much higher than tenth in that list.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 8:24 pmIf Add ons are realised Trafford will be the tenth most expensive keeper in football history.

A great shame about Muric if true.
I really took to him and was really looking forward to seeing his development next season.
Ah well, I suppose we've got to get behind Trafford now. Hope he turns out as good.

He’d posted to say he was in Manchester earlier. Maybe returned to pre-season training today and received some bad news?
I can kind of understand it if he’s been told he’s been ousted after the massive season he just had for us.
But yes, a bit petulant but think Obafemi did the same.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Some on Twitter saying he's done it twice before/all the time and this was done weeks ago.
