Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think the bigger barrier with Tresor is rival interest. Fulham are said to be after him. If he's going to be a starter there then I can't see how it's not a more attractive proposition from his POV all round.
I'd like him but he's not a crucial position when we have Benson, Zaroury, Redmond, and JBG all capable wingers, Amdouni, JBG, Brownhill, Twine, and probably Obafemi/Foster capable of playing in the hole (And I can also see Zaroury ending up there), and then have further backup options like Vitinho, Obafemi out wide, or even seeing if Churlinov can come good.
In terms of our remaining budget and positions that we need to strengthen, he's down the list by some margin IMO, I can only see him coming in if Benson or Zaroury leave at this point.

JBG, Vitinho, Obefami, Churlinov, and to some degree Twine were all "fringe players" in last years Championship, and doing a job for us when called upon. I hope we are not relying on these guys for the next season in the Prem as I think it will be a step too far in what is a very cruel league.

Until we sign Peter Pan or Dorian Gray, they're all ageing.

The vastly experienced premier league JBG.

Wasn't saying relying on- was saying we've got plenty of depth in those roles whereas we are much lighter in other areas, so we need to focus our remaining budget elsewhere.warksclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 1:12 pmJBG, Vitinho, Obefami, Churlinov, and to some degree Twine were all "fringe players" in last years Championship, and doing a job for us when called upon. And Gudmundsson recorded his 2nd most minutes and starts in a season ever for us last year, and most individual match appearances. He wasn't exactly a fringe player, and despite being deployed in 4 different positions at various times held his own every game and won us a couple.
He got written off by some fans last summer and I'm surprised they've not learned their lesson, he's a quality, quality player.

Suspect a number were from the bench-seem to recall he played more oftenin the second half of the season when VK was not keen to start Jack Cork. Do you think JBG could be a real threat in the PL ?claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 1:19 pmThe fringe player JBG who played in 44 games including 37 league games out of 46 ?

These days, even if the player is more often utilised from the bench than the kick off, at those numbers they’re not fringe. It’s a squad game and JBG was well utilised by Kompany.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:13 pmI expect him to be involved.

Nixon has said we aren’t prepared to go to the 15m that Sunderland want for Jack Clarke.

Yeah I cannot say I am sad to miss out on Clarke at that price, to be honest I thought we'd already moved on. I still keep my hopes up that the likes of Tella and Tresor are the true remaining targets in the wide/attacking areas (not counting Koleosho who I would imagine is seen as more of a development player).
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Sky Sports North East reporter Keith Downie on twitter re. Clarke:
‘Understand Sunderland have rejected a FOURTH bid from Burnley for winger Jack Clarke.
Latest offer is £10m plus a few million in add-ons.
Clarke aware of big interest in him from Vincent Kompany & keen to play in the Premier League‘

Clarke’s a talent footballer. Technically excellent, two footed and can go either way with the ball.
Would be happy if we signed him.

Different players. Clarke is a left winger, holds width, can dribble in tight areas, Tella is a right winger/forward that prefers playing tucked inside and in behind than out wide.

Two very different players. Clarke a much better ball carrier. I’d liken him to a lower-level Jack Grealish with the way he carries the ball and draws defenders towards him. Tella is all about the pace and running in behind.

Since we played at the weekend, tresor and Clarke links reappear, so would expect in a day or 2 for there to be an updated report on Tella and Palmer, we do need another wide player to go along with a left back and at least one cm

Tella good on the left as well cutting in like an inside forward.

aye but we can't afford both so my vote is for Tella ! Not only for his ability but you could see from all the videos how positive he was around the place

It’s not so much cheating he runs like Bambi on ice, legs going more sideways than forward, and yet he still has pace. A la Grealish he gets more stick than he deserves.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 2:12 pmso you don't think he's the biggest cheat in the PL for the last 6 years then ? Aye alright then

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
nah, he falls over at the slightest (if any) contact far too many times and jumps up and gives it the big un - should have seen red at the Turf for an atrocious tackle the likes of which I've not seen committed on him. Good player when he stays on his feet though, but you would have to ask why no decent team has gone in for him...........Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 3:42 pmIt’s not so much cheating he runs like Bambi on ice, legs going more sideways than forward, and yet he still has pace. Fair. I’m happy with Redmond/Benson on the right so I’d rather spend that bit of budget on Zaroury’s side now, whether that’s Clarke/Tresor/someone else.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 3:40 pmaye but we can't afford both so my vote is for Tella ! Clarke £15m a total joke price
It's a move for Nathan Tella at £15m a proven goalscorer in the Championship who imo could make the step up .Unpopular as it maybe Wout could provide killer balls for our pacey strikers. So if get Nathan back Wout may have a role to play after all in cm

Makems are up in arms again enraged that we would dare to sign one of their players.
This particularly made me laugh.
Aye, only finished 32 points ahead of you lot, completely ******* all over the division with our new style of play.
When did fans of championship clubs get so delirious with regards to transfer fees?

Mad aren’t they. I’ve seen a few Sunderland fan accounts/podcasters on twitter say it’s insulting and we should double it.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 3:52 pmMakems are up in arms again enraged that we would dare to sign one of their players.

Same fans will be up in arms why there aren’t more incomings at the club too.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
According to Nixon, Sunderland were expecting to sell players to fund new ones but they are asking too much so nobody, apart from us, is putting the offers in.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Yup
‘Why would he want to move to Burnley’
Probably because we’re in the Prem and have one of the most well respected and admired young managers in the entire game.
Also we’ve proven that we won’t stand in players’ ways if something like relegation happens or a bigger club comes in for them.
Seems like the perfect club for a young player to join to showcase their talent in the biggest league in the world….

To have a like for like for Zaroury would be brilliant if we signed Clarke.
Just when one of them is tiring and but then replaced by the other would be the last thing a full back would want to see.
One of our successes last season were the times when we were able to made attacking substitutions and it didn’t weaken the team.

If reports are true that Clarke is now "disgruntled" at Sunderland and is pushing for a move to the Prem himself, it maybe explains why we've not given up on it.
Let's hope we can sign him and help him get regruntle himself in our squad.

We need to get regruntle into the Oxford English.
Clarke didn't perform at his best against I think, but obviously a very good prospect and would strengthen the squad.

I think Clarke could be a great signing - I am beginning to hope we get a left-back though, still time yet and I'm hoping something is brewing behind the scenes that will come out of nowhere like Zeki did.

I know, how does a player that they paid 750k for after one decent season becomes a 10m plus player ?? This is the trouble with dealing with clubs in this country, we should stick to looking around Europe
