It’s great having a pantomime villain at a match but you don’t want that to be your own player. It just doesn’t help the team in any way.Let’s get the season underway and judge then. Whoever lines up for us should get a clean slate on the pitch. Prima Donna type players have never gone down well with Burnley fans imo whereas grafters do. The best thing if he is still here is that he plays a blinder and fans get behind him early doors. I’m
Not convinced he will be here though.
I'm with you regarding both the 'Pantomime Villains' and 'Prima Donnas' but what I struggle with in this case is the latter tag being applied to Wout Weghorst.
WW joined Burnley when we we're deep in the relegation mire and at a time when he already knew that to be considered for the Netherlands World Cup squad he needed to be playing in a top division. With those factors along with a stated desire to play in the EPL borne in mind, he agreed to sign for Burnley with conditions put in place to obviate the risk of Burnley's (at that point likely) failure to stay up not impacting on his WC ambitions. I don't think anyone of fair/open mind could criticise him for that and by their agreeing to those conditions and subsequently honouring them without complaint, the club thought those conditions reasonable too. Can anyone point to any
evidence of the club bitching about WW going first to Besiktas and then Old Trafford; bearing in mind that what somebody's Mum said she'd read on Twitter is not evidence.
Wout Weghorst got stroppy when he was substituted in a match? Another isolated video clip; but if you consider that signifies that WW's a prima-donna, well you'd have a long list of Burnley players, including some of our Greats on your list.
WW wasn't commiserating with his team-mates on our relegation? Is that being a prima donna or just WW's way of handling disappointment? Bear in mind that he was relatively new to and perhaps still a fringe member of the group. Also that those opinions/judgements too were formed on the basis of just a few moments of video tape, who knows (other than somebody's Mum or 'in the know' mate) what went on before and after?
Then of course there's the WC contretemp, which (again based on just a few seconds of without context video) appeared to be instigated by Connor Roberts rather than WW anyway. Wales had just lost, CR was likely peed-off - I know I would have been - and in the same way, I think it highly likely that when looking for a target for my dissapointment, I'd be looking first for my own club-mate playing on the opposing side. You know him already and even if not bosom-buddies you'll be acquainted; it's less offensive to vent your ire on a mate as it offers the opportunity to later apologise and both laugh it off over a beer.
I'll only join the Wout Out Brigade when I see some evidence that he's an arrogant prima donna who's disruptive to the squad; until then, I'd rather see the back of any and all of thoe 'fans' who booed him while wearing a Burnley shirt.
Before replying I would agin repeat, that the sound-bite that someone's (even your own) Mum/mate's heard or even your own, no doubt considered interpretation of a video clip seen in the media is not evidence; I know, unreasonably picky aren't I.
