Jimmy Anderson

Post by karatekid » Tue Aug 01, 2023 8:31 am

I wonder if Jimmy will regret not bowing out on a high like Stuart Broad has done. If he doesn’t get selected for the next test match due to form or injury and then decides to call it a day it would be a real shame for him as he may then be consigned to a quiet announcement that would not be befitting of his legendary status.
It would have been quite a sight seeing Anderson and Broad walking off together for the last time, after an unbelievable ashes comeback, receiving the deserved acclaim as two of Englands greatest ever bowlers.

Going out the way Broady did, was a very Stuart Broad way of doing it - with a bit of flamboyance, and a bit of look at me.

Jimmy going through a quiet announcement without all of that would more than likely be a very Jimmy way of doing things as well.....

Just heard R4 say Jimmy Anderson wants to get to 700 test wickets. Only 13 more, I think was said.

I make no secret of my admiration for Jimmy Anderson. One of the greatest sportsmen ever. I’m with dande on this one…. I see him having a quiet retirement…. But he’ll fully deserve all the accolades he’ll get.

When Jimmy decides he is going to call it a day I am sure he will be called up for a Test so he can do it in style. The DFS sale may have ended by then.

Got some admiration for Broad for recognising when its right to bow out and leave on a high and I think it turned out a perfect ending for him. It will be a shame if Anderson desperately drags out his international test career in a bid to get to 700 wickets and I just hope it doesn't put pressure on the selectors to include him in some of the lesser matches to help him get his 700 when he really shouldn't be in the team.

I think it might have been Strauss on Test Match Special yesterday who said Anderson used the Covid break to do plenty of strength and conditioning work in the gym, which he’d never really been able to do before on a consistent basis.

The result was he came back quicker and had some of his best years.

Obviously a few years older now but he’s got a long break on the cards now before the India series to get himself right.
I can’t imagine he’ll play an awful lot over there but if he can keep fit for next summer I wouldn’t be writing him off breaking the next record.

Whilst I'd concede that JA is past his best, l don't feel that his wicket haul in this series was a fair reflection of how well he bowled; he had a staggering number of deliveries miss the edge by millimetres.

Some people don't want to keep playing if they can't do what they used to; some will carry on for ever because they love playing. Different strokes.

W.G.Grace's last match was as captain of Eltham 2nd XI. Would it be a surprise to see Anderson play for Burnley again?

He didn't bowl well in the first test on a wicket that was hardly favourable for him. Since, I think he's bowled far better than his figures have shown.

Jimmy could quite easily have picked up a Pfeiffer in that last innings the number of times he beat the batsmen.

700 wickets and 200 games, only sachin has made it 200 tests, would be some achievement for a bowler to play that many games

With Broad gone, Anderson's role in the next 18 months could be very important as we transition towards the next Ashes series. His presence on the field (and especially as a squad member) will be invaluable.

If Jimmy has another series like this one, not sure how much longer he will around the squad

You really don't see him having a role "around the squad" going forward??

Depends how he performs. I get the impression Brendan and stokes will be ruthless (similar to VK no room for sentiment).

If he gets back to the Jimmy we know and love 100% he’s one of the best bowlers on the planet in that form.
But if he has another poor series I am not sure they will pick him.

Jimmy has to prove himself to be worth his spot just like every other bowler.

India next up, the grave yard of fast bowlers.

Broad gone, Woakes not keen on touring. Wood struggles to play 2 tests on the bounce. Robinson never looks fit enough, could struggle in 40 degree heat.

Not sure we write him off just yet?

Who knows for India, the squad looks to be in a bit of redevelopment stage now.

England might fancy blooding a few youngsters. Carson, Toungue, Cook and White need to come through eventually

As previously mentioned, only 10 needed after the series just ended.

I'd guess he wont go to India, and if he does wont bowl a huge amount maybe. (Last time Eng played in SRi Lanka/India, though, he got 6 in 1 test v Sri and 8 in 3 tests v India).
Then next summer's home schedule is 3 tests v W Indies and 3 v Sri Lanka. In 2022's equivalent split series v NZ and SA (stronger opponents) Jimmy picked up 21 wickets I believe. (About the same as in the 2021 home full series v India).
If he's fit and new bowlers dont come through (and with Broad off the scene), there's a great chance hell make 700.

Agreed.

Just looking at bowling stats for Ashes. Anderson short of wickets, so bottom of table for average runs conceded per wicket, but only Broad bowled more overs across the 5 games/10 innings. Broad just over 18 overs per innings. Anderson (rested one game) over 19 overs per innings (8 innings). Anderson most maidens, 37, Broad 33. It's a great record for the experienced bowler on the team.

I'm told that once he's retired for a year, he'll have a couple of seasons as an amateur with Lowerhouse, because he's used to winning things ... ;)

I don't think you noted that I said "around the squad". I can see him being a big influence on the younger bowlers as we look forward to a new era of quick bowling.
Will he play many games? I'm not sure, but I doubt that- in the absence of Broad - MacCullum and Stokes will want to dump him immediately.

Exactly. Not underestimating his contribution. Just the apparent recrnt difficulty in adding to his sheds load!
