I don’t really get what you mean by being far too clever. Or what relevance buying Trafford has to do with anything else.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 7:35 pmBizarre response, I’ve considered the response and replied in more detail with my POV.
It’s really simple
Would you prefer to have a settled squad now or in another week or two- which would be more beneficial for our chances this season?
& yes, I appreciate that it doesn’t work like that but again when we’re chucking 14-19 mill on an untested young goal keeper I think we’re being far too clever.

Most people, or everyone, would prefer to have completed our transfer business by now. However, history tells us that's largely unrealistic. I'm actually surprised how many signings we've made to date, probably with more coming very soon.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 7:35 pmBizarre response, I’ve considered the response and replied in more detail with my POV.

For me being too clever is buying a Trafford in the hopes that he turns into a highly profitable asset (and looking for these sort players) when we have glaring holes elsewhere…
It’s not like we have an infinite budget, we’re Burnley.
There’s a balance to be had like. Staying up guarantee’s far better cash flow than trying to constantly hit on promising youngsters to flip and staying up isn’t a given.
We will more than likely be fine just think we’re making it hard for ourselves

Obviously there's some business to be done after the season starts. All clubs will be involved in transfers up to deadline day. It's not a problem.

I'm sure the management and Board will be relying on more than just hope when it comes to Trafford.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 7:44 pmFor me being too clever is buying a Trafford in the hopes that he turns into a highly profitable asset (and looking for these sort players) when we have glaring holes elsewhere…

Aren't you forgetting that there only 19 other teams and each of them has also got 8 fewer games?CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 6:59 pmHow can you not?
There’s 8 less games so each one has way more impact on your overall league position as a %
Still get 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.

I don’t think it’s particularly unrealistic to suggest that we should have probably had more signed by now that will be considered starters - for a start we’ve known that we were up since what late March/April time and so far in the door with 6 days before the start of the season is Beyer nailed on and probably Redmond?
It’s not like we had to flip a load of players off the books after relegation last year and completely rebuild.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I’d say its more likely that Trafford has been bought because Kompany thinks he’s going to be a valuable player for us, whether that’s immediately or over time. I’m a big Muric fan but no one here knows what goes on behind closed doors. Perhaps Kompany has seen something he doesn’t like, could be mentality, could be the way he trains, who knows. But point being, we’ve clearly got budget for other areas so not sure it matters.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 7:44 pmFor me being too clever is buying a Trafford in the hopes that he turns into a highly profitable asset (and looking for these sort players) when we have glaring holes elsewhere…

No s*** all teams play 19 games.
My point (again) is that you get off to a bad start in the PL and there’s a lot fewer games to claw it back.
Currently we’re heading into the season with a very unbalanced squad that in a system that famously took 10 ish games to get properly clicking - the Luton postponement is an absolute god send.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
A couple of thoughts here.
Firstly, I am fairly relaxed about the state of our squad right now. Given that City is a completely free hit, and Kompany’s preferred possession style isn't going to be possible in that game, I think arguably our season doesn't start in earnest for 3 weeks. That is time to correct weaknesses to the squad.
Secondly, for all that it is hard to discern the pattern of our business right now and the squad is top heavy. I don't agree with this argument that neither Twine nor JBG can be classed as options out wide - both have played the vast majority of their football from wide. They are options centrally as well but at my own view is that against the bigger teams and on the road in particular, we are likely to value athleticism in those 8/10 roles, and Amdouni has presumably been brought in with the attacking 10 role in mind, so if Twine and JBG are going to compete it has to be out wide as well as centrally.
Our recruitment team have got lots right and deserve to be trusted but for all it does seem a fair point that a week from the actual start of the season we are a little more unbalanced than we would ideally want.

Deals fall as the cards, you play with what you've got.
I'm sure the management are far more aware of our needs than you or I, but wishful thinking has never been a transfer policy.
Another point we should all be aware of, is compare our business so far, against West Ham, Everton, Wolves, Luton, Sheff Utd.........
There are times to look on the dark side, this isn't one of them.

You say you are worried about a bad start; realistically we could be on 0 points after the 3rd round of games because we will not have had the opportunity to beat Luton.

If this is making it hard for ourselves I dread to think what people thought our transfer windows were like under Dyche and Garlick.

I don’t Personally agree.
I get what he is saying. Correct me if im wrong coolclaret, but I think you’re trying to say we have spent a lot of money already but it’s in areas we were relatively strong. Yet positions where we knew we going to be weak in April are still as bad as then if not worse (namely left back and cm).
I think it’s about balance, I expected us to have signed at at least 1 cm by now and a lb. Purely because I thought they were the ultimate priorities ahead of the new season

Few unknowns obviously but Redmond, Amdouni, O’Shea.
Possibly Trafford once he settles in.

We haven’t - loads of teams have signed a similar amount, look at Brentford for a start!
So the best part of what 60 mill and nailed on is a free transfer and Amdouni (who looks good but might take a bit to get going).

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I make it around 50m spent so far and that includes 7/8m on Beyer, which isn’t really fair to include as he was already here, as was Obafemi. So around £40m on ‘new’ players. Our first 11 was already pretty strong and aside from left back and CM I’m not sure there’s another position in the ‘first 11’ which needs upgrading?CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 8:07 pmWe haven’t - loads of teams have signed a similar amount, look at Brentford for a start!

This is a fair point but we also don’t know if all these are pure VK transfers - a lot could come from our analytics/scouting team…
I think players like Benson/Cullen/Zaroury/Foster/Bastien last season were definitely from Kompany’s time in Belgium as he had managed with/against them for two seasons.
It’s also different as well because last season we had to totally transform our squad and needed a ton of bodies in.
In my opinion (god forbid I have one) I would have thought the essentials would be bringing in a few bits of quality and be hitting the first game pretty much good to go - maybe minus one or two.
I think we’re still a way off being fully ready. Hoping we get some over the line soon like

8 is similar, but not quite as many as (our) 9

Chelsea's 11 is the most, I wonder if we'll see all of them in their starting 11 next week.

Biggest myth on this thread. There's a real confusion between not being the best option at something, and not being something at all.

Biggest worry for me are the injuries ( ?) to Cullen and Benson. Not a word from the club either positive or negative. Surely if they were on the road back to fitness they would have at least played the extra time today so that would suggest they both have long term injuries

It would suggest they are injured, but not necessarily long term injuriesFCBurnley wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 8:36 pmBiggest worry for me are the injuries ( ?) to Cullen and Benson. Bit feisty on here today! Quite like it though, some good tussles.
I do find the criticism a little odd of our business so far, especially considering we quite clearly still have irons in the fire. I’m surprised we’ve managed to get so many over the line especially considering how notoriously difficult transfers can be for myriad reasons, not least agents holding out for better deals.

Why would you fly someone to Germany, for a friendly, even with just the slightest niggle at this stage?FCBurnley wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 8:36 pmBiggest worry for me are the injuries ( ?) to Cullen and Benson. I wouldn’t say they mean zero like and no because we know that right now we’re still deficient in two key areas of the pitch.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 8:36 pmso don't you agree it's a bit early tp judge the new lot as to if we have or haven't improved the starting 11 ? I've watched ever single game and am none the wiser as it's pre-season and the games mean zero.
By the very nature of the signings (some playing the same position) it’s practically impossible to say they’ve improved the starting XI but have no doubt improved the depth.
I just get concerned when I see the large amounts money that we’ve been happy to spend on what are probably gonna be squad players and seemingly are still linked with players in positions that we have ample cover for.
Again, we’re Burnley we’re not Man City, we don’t have an unlimited budget.

I think the important thing to understand is VK's intention to have genuine competition for every position.
