Would only sell if he’s not willing to sign a new contract.

I like Brownhill a lot, and for preference would definitely keep him. But for 30 mill you'd have to take it.
The squad is top heavy, and we have players that can fill Josh's boots. The money would go a long way to balancing this windows budget.
On the other hand I doubt WH will go to 30 mill so the point is moot. I wouldn't sell him for less.

Have you decided if/when Brownhill moves on which player you will target next ?
The way you speak about Brownhill is really weird and not far removed from restraining order levels

Brownhill would be a huge loss
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I like Brownhill, but if Kompany doesn't see him as being a regular then we'd be daft not to take 20 million if we can get it.

I would much rather extend Brownhill but I can't see that happening if WHU are serious.
£20m could be useful but his engine and intangibles are hard to replace.

Can’t see West Ham being willing to pay £20 million, for Brownhill, if he’s in the last year of his contract.

Agreed.
Top character to have a round and brings good energy etc but can probably get better technical midfielders than him so if there’s an offer anywhere near what you mentioned then we’d be silly not to deal.
We just need to be cautious of losing some characters who are the foundation of the squad and educate the newcomers about the place and what is expected. After the exodus 12 months ago can we afford to lose all of Barnes, Brownhill, Taylor, Cork and Jay Rod this summer?

This was one that was always likely to come up once a lot of our business got done.
Moyes and West Ham are very keen on Brownhill and he would be excellent in their midfield.
I don't like it but it makes sense. still expecting Jay, Corky and CT to also move on as well in this window.

If that was the case half of this board would have restraining orders over their comments on Weghorst.
Well we have already signed one player that’s better, Lokonga will be another and Ramsey will be the third. All better technical players than Brownhill

Brownhill is a strange one, offers somthing that our other midfielders don't but wherever he's been used I've often ended up bemoaning his lack of quality on the ball.
He's clearly a good player but I don't know if he suits this system enough for us to turn down a good bid for him. If we could get another industrious midfielder with a bit more quality then I'd be happy for him to move on for the right money, but I do think he will be harder to replace than a lot seem to think.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Brownhill is a valuable player in our team. There are reasons why teams like West Ham have been interested in him for a couple of years. I don't see any reason to doubt his quality.
He's also coming into the final year of his contract and is in/approaching his late 20's. If it makes sense to sell and we do sell, so be it. He'd be a loss but we will undoubtedly replace him with more quality to plug the hole.
Player turnover is going to be our model going forwards. Doesn't mean we have to doubt the quality of players on their way out, particularly when other Premier League clubs are interested in them. Brownhill has played with his heart on his sleeve whilst at Burnley and deserves all the praise he gets.

Also with brownhill unless he signs a new deal, which I doubt he will if he’s not going to be a starter, we could end up losing him for nothing in the summer

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Hi Steddyman, sorry I didn't reply earlier, but I've been watching Mission to Burnley. Example of the first goal already given. The second goal though, you could have driven a bus between our line of defenders and there line of players attacking. Just the kind of point that I'm sure the coaching team will address with the players during training.
We can't just accept that other teams and individuals are better whilst preparing for games. Similarly we can't presume that we are better than our opponents whilst preparing. However when reviewing what happened, we have to focus on areas where we can improve, not just accept that they are better than us.
We can't have a defeatist attitude. We always have to strive to do better.

Can't take corners

But has more goals in him than any other CM's
Ramsey would certainly not be a direct replacement
But given our "model" of making profits on players where we can, then so be it
Will need another CM addition on top of Ramsey if he goes

I too like Brownhill too, but after Jay-Rod, he's the one on that list I'd be happiest to see leave. Though he appears to be deemed surplus to requiremens by most, the one I'd really like to see us keeping is Charlie Taylor; I suspect that at some point we'll concede that in the EPL we need a real fullback on that side of the pitch too.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 1:21 pm...can we afford to lose all of Barnes, Brownhill, Taylor, Cork and Jay Rod this summer?

There will come a point when we have to think business first, club second. Selling players for fee’s and not letting them leave for nothing is the only way to continually improve the players around the first XI.
Feelings about the player(s) must be put to one side.
Its no co-incidence that our arguably two most saleable assets have just signed new deals
I’ll assume the final outcome is what is best for the club in the long term. Whatever happens.

Yes that’s fair enough, this type of player is difficult to come by. But I think it’s clear to see VK thinks we need atheltic midfielders with technical ability.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 14, 2023 1:47 pmLet's hope these far better technical players arrive, as of yet we may be coming 2nd in a 1 horse race for both of them
I think we can all admit that is something Brownhill is not.
If Brownhill goes I will wish him well he was a big contributor in our championship season. If his fee allows us to get in a top CM then even better it’s a deal that works for both parties.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
According to the comments made in the doc - the aim is to sell about four players every summer.
So far, unless I am mistaken, the only sale is Bobby Thomas for around 2 million.
I am not sure that off-loading the players that haven't (yet) worked out - Egan-Riley, Twine, Bastien, Weghorst, Peacock-Farrell, is what they are thinking of with the four sales.
Brownhill would be much more the kind of sale they are looking for - bringing in a sizeable fee.

Why would they spend what we think he’s worth to be 4-5th choice

At the moment many would consider Josh a squad player rather than an automatic starter. If we take the emotion out of it, it is a squad player or two or more that we will need to sell. Hopefully when it gets to automatic starters, we can reduce the numbers to two, one starter and one squad member. Then we will be in business. We already have a manager in place who understands the financial requirements.

We may end up selling that many in the Premiership but I doubt the necessity would exist, assuming we can control our wage bill, as we’ve proven in the past how we can grow cash balances without sales in the Prem.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think that we have to be careful that we don’t lose our togetherness and become a team of merceries imo.
That’s exactly what happened with Watford.
Last season we made some cracking signings but underpinning all of that was a core group of lads that had been with the club for a while and I think if we would have let them go it would have been a different story… VK obviously thought the same by keeping & playing Jay, Cork, Bash etc so I’m not too worried….
Brownhill I think is good in a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 or a 4-2-3-1 but not as a disciplined sitting midfielder - he needs to be allowed to run about because he just isn’t a 6.
I liked him at that sort of ‘number 10’ position last year even though he wasn’t playing a traditional sort of role there. He really helped our pressing from the front and winning the ball back quickly after turning the ball over.

Would not be surprised if are looking to recoup some money in both this seasons transfer windows. If I was to hazard a guess I’d say around £20m - but maybe a combination of transfer / loan fees (or covering players wages for the period ). If we can’t sell those who may not be in VK’s plans because they are on high wages (eg Bastien, JayRod, etc) then loans might be the only option. But also think this could all happen at the end of the transfer window when VK can assess the business he has done bringing players in and what he thinks he might need.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Absolute madness to let Brownhill leave if it does materialize.
The team the other day had an average age of just 23. We need some experience to back up and guide the talent we're bringing in.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Surprised with the reaction on here, we've just signed Berge for 12m, could be close to Lokonga still and have Ramsey due to be unveiled any time in the next day or two at around 15m. Do people seriously think we cant replace Brownhill for 15-20m?
While I like Brownhill, he falls into the category of Jack of all trades, master of none. Its a little harsh but in reality he doesn't have the ability to play in the tight spaces required at this level. Interestingly, as a poster above said, I felt his most useful position for us was in the CAM slot at the start of last season, as his pressing and winning the ball back high up the pitch offered us something a little different. However it was quite unorthodox having a more defensive player in that role and I think we'll be looking to have a proper CAM this season who can create chances rather than pressing and winning the ball back. (Likley to be Ramsey i guess but we could see any of zaroury/redmond/gudmundsson/amdouni play there).
Last thing id say is while I think selling Brownhill for 20m is good business, Its only good business if we do get another CM in. I'm counting Bastien out as I don't think he'll be here so that would leave us with:-
Cullen
Berge
Cork
Ramsey
With that number id want another one coming in at a minimum- Lokonga would do it. There's an argument to be made that Cork likely will miss games through suspension and looking at Berge's playing history he could easily miss ten games over the season. So maybe another one after Lokonga but im being greedy.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I mentioned this exact thing the other day. Barnes gone, let's say Brownhill is sold, Jay goes and possibly Taylor or Cork - that's the entire leadership group gone in one summer. Suicide at this level imho

Didn't Sevilla have to transfer list their whole squad due to debts over £100 million?
Sure I read the owners of Hamburg own Sevilla as well, probably just an exercise to get more money out of us.

You can see why he would prefer them over us, but they are financially buggad. You never know
