Good News: The Cambridge Bike Rescuer

Post by Rowls » Wed Aug 23, 2023 8:40 am

Watch this - it's really enjoyable. It's a guy in Cambridge who spends his time running a campaign to retrieve stolen bikes.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-66585713

It's fantastic and shows what can be done when people come together to challenge, tackle and defeat crime. It's given me a spring in my step this morning.

Of course, it does beg the bleeding obvious question, why aren't our police employing these tactics with the same vigour and enthusiasm?

If they had the resources and funding to do so, I am sure they would. Unfortunately though, they don't so have to prioritise more serious crimes.

Yeah, I get that lack of funding means that crime has to be prioritised, but I do fear that we all pay a high price for this. Clamping down on what is considered 'low level' crime creates a better environment for us all to enjoy and feel safe. Do we really believe the bike thieves, and other low level criminals, would be so prolific if they stood a good chance of getting convicted and doing lengthy community service, or indeed jail time, if they didn't comply?

Ah sod it. I genuinely felt good to watch this guy going around and fighting crime like a real world Batman.

I only included the line about the police because I thought that to omit it would draw more attention. Sod it.

You'd think the Police could stretch the budget to a mask & cape for him though.

Yes, it is a good news story, and I largely agree with your last line. Too many getting away with it these days. I would also love to see antisocial scroats punished too. I feel so sorry for those who have to live amongst them. People have their lives ruined and with it a whole host of MH issues. People have a right to live a peaceful life, without fear.

It looks like he's doing a great job and enjoying fighting crime. The best thing about it is his claim that the constant anti-theft interjections are actually cutting attempts.

It's great to see and something we ought to all applaud.

I had a bike stolen last year. The thief was captured on cctv which along with a detailed description and photos was sent to the police. Myself and a few friends tracked down the thief and so we informed the police who said they weren’t interested as my bike would have probably been sold on. I asked them what would happen if we paid a visit ourselves and was basically told that would be up to us.

I knew a bloke who ran a small factory and someone spotted that a pair of burglars had broken into an old lady's house. So he and his workforce surrounded the house, and when the pair made a run for it, they caught one and chased the other.

The police did arrest the burglars, but they also found the time to demand this bloke's phone so they could see if he was using it during the chase. Apparently it's illegal to use a phone to coordinate the attempt to catch a crook, and they had time to investigate that particular heinous crime!
