Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Vinny clearly thought he could do better for that dosh. I like Nathan, fantastic ball control, speed and finishing. Potential clear. But he is 24, 4 years older than Bakayoko and 6 years older than Odebert but hasn’t done it at a major level yet. How good will they be when they are 24? We could add a few of our other players too to that example.
Personally I’m happy to go for Bakayoko or an equivalent, but I wish Nathan well, we owe him a fair bit and I’m pleased his efforts have led to this reward instead of slogging it out for another year in the league below.

Agreed.
I loved Tella last season and although I’d like to have seen him signing permanently, I had a nagging doubt about whether or not he would make the step up.
At those sort of sums, we’ve made the right decision not get involved.
Fair play to Southampton if they’ve got £20 million and a sell on. That’s bonkers.

Everyone's a winner in that deal - Saints getting £20m and a sell on, and Tella joining a good club managed by another footballing great and a chance to play in Europe. We were right to bow out though.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Tella going to Germany actually helps us tbh
It shows young players that if they come here they can develop and go on to bigger clubs if they do well here
That’s something we saw early in Dyche’s tenure and what I wanted to see more of
VK has the platform to carry this on though and it will make us more attractive as a result

This feels like when you fall in love with a girl on a summer holiday as a youngster then you ultimately can’t make it work long term and end up going your separate ways
Wishing all the very best to Nathan. I’ll always remember his fabulous contributions in our marvellous team last year.

20 million is a fair price for Tella in today's market.

That’s the problem, todays market is completely wrong, blame Ross McCormack going to Fulham for 12m, he started it offforzagranata wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:24 pm20 million is a fair price for Tella in today's market.

Well, if nothing else we haven’t half created some value for the parent clubs of Tella, Harwood-Bellis and Maatsen.
We’re definitely an attractive loan proposition.

My thoughts exactly. Was so impressed with him last year, he bought into it and was scintillating. Superb in everyway. I wish him nothing but success and the very best, but I think 20 mill was too far for us.
Good luck Tella baby, grab every opportunity, and thanks for that incredible season you were amazing. I hope you are at Bayern in 2 years or back in the Champions League with us.

I’m not convinced it will either. Southampton have played a blinder though, if it’s £20 million. That on its own is a big fee and then with the safety net of further money if he does make the step up and his value increases.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:17 pmDo you think that Leverkusen will be able to sell him on for a profit?
I wish him well but I'm not sure if his value will go up further.
I’d love to see him do well - hopefully the move works out for him.

Just seen this.....without reading any other post
He is not worth 20m
Love the guy but we'd be mad paying that

Under Sean we were never the loan destination of choice so that’s changed significantly now as you say.agreenwood wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:31 pmWell, if nothing else we haven’t half created some value for the parent clubs of Tella, Harwood-Bellis and Maatsen.
We’re definitely an attractive loan proposition.
But abit of a quandary now on how we go forward with loans when we’ve got a big squad (albeit with key gaps) of players that we need to develop ourselves.
From this point onwards do we only take loans with options to buy at set prices (not mandatory)?
Will we have learned our lesson from last year with what’s happened subsequently with Tella and Maatsen in particular?
I find it hard to believe last year Soton wouldn’t have agreed £12-14m option on Tella even if at the time we would have equally found it hard to believe that he would have hit the level to make that realistic.
It’s a key market to exploit but not without challenges.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Good luck to Tella, nice move for him, glad we stuck to our guns with the valuation. Still think we will see his main replacement over the next week.

Glad that’s over with.
Good move for Tella, excellent sum for Southampton and brings peace on here and everyone can move on. Throw in the added bonus of being spared comments when he scores for them as it’s only the German league and you can’t compare as we have read with weghorst
Everyone wins

To be fair when we sold all our players last summer the majority of fans at other clubs and pundits said we'd slip down the league's, look how that turned outTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Fri Aug 25, 2023 11:25 pmSaints are seriously committed to staying down. If Adams leaves they are nowhere.

Iam not sure we can hang our cap on the guy from PSV.....they seem intent on keeping him till after their game on Wednesday and I don't think we can, or should, offer an amount that would make them change their mind, nor do I think there's enough time after that game to get the deal done, or if it fell through to move onto another target.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think you’re right about Bakayoko Nori - PSV clearly won’t part with him before Wednesday and I have the feeling that other clubs will also be circling if they get the sniff of a chance.
That said I’d presume he was one of two/three targets that we’d be looking at and we’d be ready to activate on any of those (including Bakayoko) if the deal was right.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Seems Aster Vranckx is going to Fiorentina for 7 million euro.
Concerning Bakayoko he really is the next best thing and he's at a point now where we could still get him. He's been doing great in the national team getting more and more playing time. Definitely a player that could make us alot better and more dangerous. Imagine a taller and faster Benson with a bit more dribbling skills.
All respects to Benny no one has his distance curler. Bend it like benny.
A player that can start for the Belgian national team at the age of 20 definitely is a huge asset for Burnley. Imagine starting him and then subbing him for Benson after an hour. Poor leftback...

This is all true, but spending north of £20m on potential is a huge gamble given all the things that can go wrong, and Burnley cannot afford £20m+ gambles.Anthonini wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 9:01 amSeems Aster Vranckx is going to Fiorentina for 7 million euro.

This is a different Burnley team now with the backing that we have. If Vinny thinks a player is worth £20 million plus I’m sure that it’s been well looked at and the so called gamble has been well looked at.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Similar to others, I thought Tella was excellent but I do have question marks myself whether he could go on and be as effective at PL level and I’m not sure 20 million plus add one would represent good value for us.
Also, Given our model, is whether or not we’re going to realise multiples of his fee as he progresses? I look at Benson, Zaroury, Beyer, Amdouni, even Vitinho and think someone is going to give us 3 to 5 times what we paid for you at some point. I don’t see him progressing at such a velocity that anyone would want to go above what Leverkusen have paid for him now.
If PSV will accept 25-30m for their boy and we can make up the shortfall between our 20m with the sale of one or two others, I’d call that incredible business as by all accounts he’s going to be a 50m kind of player one day.

This is a very good point. Paying 30m for this guy and bringing in 10m in player sales means we have effectively got an incredible talent for 20m. It would as you say be very very good business.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Disappointed about the Tella situ - really thought he would end up back with us. But, as others have said, glad the whole saga is now over and we can stop with the hope and move on.
Agree with what some others have said about Bakayoko. If VK really thinks he could be worth £50-60m in 12-18 months then spending £25m on him now makes complete sense. Every transfer is a gamble but some you just feel that bit more confident about, I suppose. An exciting player with superb talent who can play multiple positions in the attacking third….sounds just like what we need.
Left back has also GOT to be priority this week. We’re absolutely desperate! The longer we have to choose between Vitinho and Taylor the longer the opposition target that obvious weak point in the team. Neither are up to it in my opinion.

Looking like it’s £18 mill for Tella
I think I’d have gotten it done - we spent that on Koleosho and Trafford combined like.
Feel like Tella just fitted in with our club perfectly - he was a fan favourite and clearly was an important member of the team last season.
I understand the argument re resale value and potential but still - you also make money by consolidating in the Premier League.
Having slept on it I do feel like we’ve let a gem get away from under us.

Is this the Charlie Taylor who was part of a team that maintained premier league football at Burnley for 5 years and was part of a team that qualified for Europe? I can’t understand this sudden acceptance that, at 30, he’s no longer good enough, or doesn’t suit our new style. He’s never been afraid to get forward while I’ve been watching him and he’s arguably a better defender than Maatsen and, undoubtedly, Vitinho.
Sure we need a replacement long term but he can still do a job.

I think the sudden acceptance is more to do with the fact the manager clearly doesn’t trust him in that LB position in this system, to the point that he’s willing to give starts to players out of position there ahead of him.

Our left backs role is predominantly to be good in possession and be aggressive getting forward. Taylor is good at neither

Agree with left back being priority. Taylor great servant but doesn’t fit this system.

At times under Dyche Taylor was by far and away our most potent threat getting crosses in.

It doesn't really matter if Taylor is crap or brilliant at this point, it couldn't be any clearer he's not getting into this team at left back. And that means we need to sign one because we don't have one.

Hannes might be playing LB Sunday, just a thought

Time will tell on whether spending a big fee on Trafford was a sensible move. Although I still had some doubts about Muric, I would have probably had him as number one, a decent back up and used the Trafford fee in another position.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 10:55 amLooking like it’s £18 mill for Tella

Agree Taylor is not playing LB it would seem under VK.
Taylor has a (great) use under certain managers - was good under SD on occasions but in a 'head down, charge down the line / backs to the wall defending' way. Opposite to VK's approach 'possession / passing, thoughtful football). Charlie can go forward, just not how we do it, and will lose the ball as often as he hits the bye line.
Charlie's lack of football brain in a pure sense, and lack of technical ability with his right foot screw him in our system / style of play. So Vitinho get's the nod from VK over the two.
100% we need better than Vitinho in the starting 11, as good as he can be filling in.
All IMHO.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
It's pretty obvious that barring a significant re-think, Taylor won't get a game at left back this season and given we've now got depth at centre back, he needs to move on.
I think you can make a fair argument that if we can't recruit better, Kompany would be better tweaking his system and allowing Taylor to shuttle up and down the left flank, particularly given Berge gives him an easy option to play a conventional double pivot in midfield. But assuming Kompany isn't willing to make that compromise, at least one left back, and possibly 2, is absolutely essential. Unless Delcroix is to play there, we'll be going into the sort of game tomorrow short - and given its a key chance to pick up early season points that feels like a decision that may yet come back to haunt us.
As for Tella, I think its a real shame we haven't brought him back. There's something to be said for continuity from last season and whilst I understand the arguments about who he scored against, his age and the fee, given what we've paid for clearly unproven potential its not obvious we'll do better for less.

Trafford was a venture capital decision not a football one. We'll see if we sort this by next weekend, but atm I regret to say that I very much doubt that there are enough goals in the squad.
