THB would have struggled today. O’Shea looks an upgrade to me.

O’Shea probably had the ball more than any of our players today but he doesn’t seem like the ball playing centre half we need. He looks an ok defender who can pick an odd pass here and there but if one of our defenders is going to have the ball as much as he did today then he needs to be better at breaking the lines with his passing and/or ball carrying.

The thing we missed today was Bauer’s runs into midfield with the ball to make up numbers in that central area. Today AaD or O’Shea seemed willing or capable of doing that and if they aren’t going to do so, then you really need a 3rd cm in there

Wasn't a rumour - I knew he was out, despite the club reporting this morning that the only injured player was Obafemi.

Some of the PR that comes out of the club is awful. If they don’t want to tell the truth then say nothing

Personal opinion obviously and it's an early one , O'Shea is a long way short of PL standard

O'Shea's passing was the least of our worries today, and all in all i thought he did OK. Our shortcomings in progressing the ball were essentially a function of the fact the distinction between a back 5 and a front 5 was harder to make work in the Premier League and we needed another central midfielder to make angles and progress the ball.

Early days but not quick, not strong, not great in the air, not great on the ball. Hopefully he will grow into the role.

Be fine as a rotation player.

Think we’ve dropped a bollock not signing Taylor in all honesty. Unbelievable passer of the football.

Think all the new lads will take a good 10 to 15 games to settle in and try to pick up the pace of Premier league football. I wont criticize any of them so early in their careers at Turf Moor. Lets encourage rather than write them off. Villa today were pretty awesome in most of the things they did. Not necessarily individually but collectively. Game management was very good and they took control in those first 20 minutes or so.

That tells me nothing about the distance of pass nor accuracy or anything.

Taylor had a serious ping on him, there were lots of times today and against City where Koleosho was making a run in behind and he wasn’t found or attempted to find.

Koleosho is a bit raw but what he does have is unbelievable pace and he can get in behind pretty much any full back he’s up against - I think Taylor could find him with his passing ability.

I agree about THB's switch of play but that wasn't our problem today - we found Koleosho quite regularly. Our problem was that we couldn't break through a box midfield when out numbered in central areas and without any width in deep areas to go round it. That was a shape issue, not a personnel issue.

I wasn’t particularly inferring that it was a massive issue, I think we could have found him in behind more often, a lot was to feet not necessarily in space like.

Agree with the rest of your comment and your overall observations about the game in general. I commented similar on about page 3 of the match thread after watching the second goal go in.

If it takes that long for us to get up to speed at this level we'll certainly be relegated at the end of the season.

Think we’re being a bit over critical ,you’ve got to give enormous credit to Villa, the number of times we passed the ball forward and we’re about a yard out with the pass ,and Villa absolutely swooped on it ,they’re probably up with the top six in the Prem ,the only teams who are definitely better than them are City ,Arsenal ,Liverpool,Brighton, and possible Chelsea ,if we lose the first 6 then win 3 we’re on a point a game,it’s the first time in over a year that we’ve lost two in a row, some of the posters on here will be asking for VK head in a month at this rate, get a grip .

According to Matt Williams, who spoke in the Longside Lounge before the match, Beyer is out for 6-8 weeks with ligament damage, but it isn't his ACL.

He is here to stay as he is trying to build something. No point getting rid of him half way through.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... Villa.html

It looks like the experienced players are being left out so the inexperienced ones can get used to the Premier. He might have thought the first few matches were free hits so show them what they need to be doing at this level.

Im not saying that we dont need things to improve more quickly and I hope that some of the more established players can help us to dredge up a few good wins before that. I do feel its logical that such a large number of young players moving from a foreign country to play in Burnley will take time to settle. Its up to them and the coaching team to get them switched on as quickly as possible. I must admit I'm feeling concerned at this stage and hope its not going to be a long worrying winter.

If he was injured 2 weeks ago, then 6 weeks sounds about right, VK said that he hoped to have him back after the international break.

I'm surprised the club would let someone divulge any information on players when the manager is reluctant to do so in the weekly press conference.

Seems a very odd policy.

cant believe i'm reading people writing O'Shea off already, give ya head a wobble.

from what I've seen he' s as good as THB was last year, potentially better.

Saw Ekdal at the game also, didnt look injured but who knows. Cant be too serious as he was driving himself

It’s been very quiet on Ekdal

it was a very inexperienced back 5 yesterday and it certainly looked like they hadn’t played together before.

Villa targeted our left side especially in the first half and it was only switching Connor to LB and shift everyone over a position did we look a little more confident

Was more to highlight O’Shea’s ball playing has been decent so far and looks a good replacement for what THB brought.

I think the most rational and reasonable of us have understood this since the fixtures came out.
We've had 3 almost free hits at home, Luton away postponed - (potentially dodged a bullet there), so any points before Sept 18th is a bonus, + we have the game in hand at Luton.
By the time we play our next home game we we will have had a settled squad for a good few weeks, and we'll no longer be speculating about incomings.
So we recalibrate after Spurs, and restart the season on Sept 18th in the bottom 3, but I doubt we'll be many points below the obvious relegation favourites, and we've got 3 of our most difficult home fixtures out of the way.
I reckon that there will be between 12 and 14 teams who will be less good than Villa over the season, so let's just be positive. We should be able to get the 38 points or so needed from the last 33 /34 games of a 38 game season.
I'm sure VK won't be panicking.

I don't often post but I thought I had to after watching yesterday's performance (on TV). We definitely missed the pinging passes from the centre halves, usually delivered by previously THB and more recently Beyer. Kolo found himself with space on the left and constantly had his hand up for a long range sweeping pass but we went with short safe passes to Cullen and Berge down the middle which left little space.
Just a thought that we should have tried to widen the play and let him loose a bit more.

There wasn’t any space to play those passes, Villa simply had the defensive shape perfect

I beg to differ, first hal out CB's didn't seem to have the confidence to make the passes

I may be being too quick of the mark with O'Shea but he seems to lack the physical attributes needed for the PL.
I can't go back on what I posted but I will be willing him to show he belongs at this level

We certainly need him
For me there isn’t four defenders in the world who could have coped in a flat back four in a suicidal 4114 system, with their own front 4 not coming back over the half way line, with the quality and movement of those 5 Villa players running at them
