Maddison absolutely spoils himself ... there is a top class player there but there is also a spoilt, petulant cheat.

Bit like at the Turf last week, doesn't need to roll around and whinge at the ref constantly.

Just get on with it man FFS.

Gareth said he picks on form - Maguire must have been sensational in the 23 minutes he’s played this season.

That Bellingham chap looks good - they could try giving him the ball

Blows my mind that he’s playing two sitting midfielders against Ukraine.

Complete dosser. Should be footballing them off the park and peppering the keeper

Pretty drab match but a fine result.

Mindless speculation but from Southgate's defiance on Henderson in interviews it feels a bit like he played him to make a point today because God knows there was no footballing reason to do it.

To think that our football was postponed for that pointless cross.

Hope they haven't played too much football yet and can manage the rest of the season.

Must have been the three occasions when he should have been in on goal had he been able to control the ball. Really poor.

Criminal keeping Hendo on whilst Jude, who has scored in the last 10 minutes basically 4 games on the trot for Madrid gets taken off for another midfielder.

Southgate went to Poland to not lose. Sickening.

After my complaining about Maguire thinking he’s Beckenbauer for so long it looked like he’d finally been told. He never carried the ball once and looked much better for it. He’s a stopper and nothing else, he must stick with that.

Game and team selection today sacrificed in order not to set a precedent, and nothing more, by which I mean the only reason Henderson was picked for the squad, never mind started, was to avoid the possible future problem of a genuinely world class England player of the calibre of Kane or Saka or Bellingham going to Saudi a year from now, two years from now, five years from now (not that I'm saying it'll happen with any of those talented lads in their peak, but while it's theoretically possible one must prepare as though it will), so by this bullshit charade Southgate/the next England manager isn't bound to the precedent set by not picking Henderson because he plays in Saudi.

Problem is if you're saying someone's England chances aren't affected by going there but then you don't call the first one to go, it looks like you're tacitly admitting the league is shite (which it is, obviously, but that' not the point), which makes it harder to justify in the future. If you're trying to communicate the message that playing in Saudi is acceptable, you need to commit to the bit, so he chucked in a borderline over-the-hill player who wasn't even getting games for his former PL club even in a bad season by their standards - a player who buggered off to Saudi to enter semi-retirement. Southgate selected Henderson not because Henderson is a still an elite player or even useful to the team, but because by insisting quite visibly that playing in Saudi won't affect your England chances, by weathering the inevitable media storm and almost drawing attention to this fact by actually STARTING Henderson in spite of common football sense, the door has now been left open for when an elite player at their peak goes to Saudi and England still needs them, and a precedent which might in the future bite an England manager in the bum is avoided. Southgate playing ignorant by saying he doesn't understand the politics and the reaction is the only politically viable way he achieve this aim. He's actually very clever and knows what he's doing. His playing dumb in front of the media is a bullshit affect, It's very Machiavellian. There's no immediate footballing reason for selecting Henderson for this squad, only a broader football-political one.

Interesting take Spiral - if I can be even more cynical, Southgate has got 9-10 more months in the job and presumably no realistic chance of getting a good job in English club football. Might fancy a slice of the Saudi pie himself.
