Re: Cristiano Ronaldo
Goal statistics alone don’t define the greatest players of all time.
Messi scored another couple of goals for Argentina last night - prior to the last 2 or 3 years it was his record with Argentina and not winning anything for his country which led some people to say he can’t be the greatest. That’s changed now but Messi is clearly not at the peak he was a few years ago (but still brilliant !!)
C. Ronaldo is up there in the top 10…..probably top 5 but for me he is behind Maradona, Messi and Pele.
I also think Zidane was a better player and Ronaldo mark 1 too in terms of pure ability and how good he was when he was at his peak. I have heard a number of Man United players who played in the team that Madrid beat at Old Trafford where Ronaldo scored a hat trick say that he was the best player they had ever play against.
When you are talking about players like these who were so good and achieved so much then it’s more than statistics - there’s context around the teams they played in, the leagues they played in, their injury records, etc etc.
And even after all this there the other key element of subjectivity - it’s one opinion against another and also one persons definition of the best will be different to anothers.
Of course if someone says that John Pender was the greatest ever player that’s just wrong and opinions needed to be based on something tangible. But when you are talking about the top 10 players in the history of the game then it does become subjective.

Re: Cristiano Ronaldo
Maybe "a bore" is pushing it, but to me anyway there's no comparison between the way a Zidane or Messi runs with the ball, appreciation of a pass or space. Just my preference. I'd watch Dennis Bergkamp before Ronaldo (not saying bergkamps "better")Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Wed Oct 18, 2023 2:05 amA bore to watch!?
Ronaldo in his United and first 5 or so years at Madrid was the most exciting to watch. He was rapid, constantly dribbled and scored screamers from distance. He became a goal scoring machine after about age 32 because he could no longer run at defenders.
