RIP Bobby.

A brilliant player and a gentleman.

I met him as a youngster, on one of the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools, he was genuinely nice bloke - he had time for everyone and to spend time being coached by someone that had won the World Cup was a brilliant experience.

As a kid in the mid 70's I once saw him play in some sort of charity game at Dark Lane (Rossendale Utd)...Anne Kirkbride (Deadrie Langton, Coronation Street) tottered onto the pitch to kick-off.

He brought a guest team to play at Padiham in a charity match in the late 70's and packed the place out.
Still looked a player then too.

Asked for his autograph as a kid on instruction from my dad when he spotted him at Old Trafford cricket ground. I asked him and then he put me in a headlock before thankfully signing my book!

I am 49 so did not see much of the games Bobby played apart from re-runs. However when I was around 10 he hosted a football camp which I was privileged to be be part of and he showed us how to 1 touch pass and how it was legal to to use your arm to fend someone of taking the ball from you, and keep the ball under you foot leg stretched to the opposite direction of your fed ding off arm and player. So crystal clear of a memory like it was yesterday.

RIP sir Bobby

The words legend and great are used all too easily. In this case they are an understatement. One of, if not the greatest player this country has produced. RIP Sir Bobby.

I never saw him play but my grandad told me how good he was.

My grandad was a copper on the turf from the 50s until the late 70s. He used to stand behind the goals. He told me that Man Utd were warming up and Charlton hit a shot so hard it nearly took his head off.

I was fortunate to see Bobby Charlton play for England on a number of occasions and he was one of those players who, whenever he got the ball, not only increased the expectations of the crowd but also increased the volume of the support. An incredibly talented player but so so modest.
RIP Sir Bobby…thank you for the memories.

One of the best English footballers of all time. Survived Munich although almost certainly never got over it.

In his retirement he was often a sole beacon of class in a money-obsessed club.

About 40 years ago I was in a small family owned restaurant on the outskirts of Paris. Got chatting to the owners who were showing me photos of them when they used to be performers in the circus.
Then our conversation turned to football. And the next minute they came out with the name of Bobby Charlton. They even showed me photos of the great man. Not just in England was Bobby Charlton revered it was world wide.
RIP Sir Bobby

In 1962 or 63 I was at Junior School aged around 9 or 10. This was the age when we were first allowed to have PE lessons on the grass field. We changed in the classroom then went out to the field without the teacher. The teams were picked in the usual manner - the two best players would select the remaining best players until all were picked. The worst would usually end up in goal. I wasn't that bad so I was an outfield player and the ball came to me in my own half. I wacked it as hard as I could in the general direction of our opponent's goal, it bounced two or three times, the goalkeeper fell over and it bounced over him and into the goal - I'd scored! When we got back in the classroom the teacher came up to me and said 'I hear you scored a Bobby Charlton'. I didn't know what that was, some technical term perhaps. I did find out later.

That's my main memory of 'Bobby Charlton'.

RIP Sir Bobby,

Great player who always kept both feet on the ground.

Apparently he almost never spoke to the likes of Best and Law as he considered they did not focus enough on their football and fitness.

Started a duplicate thread on this yesterday, apologies to the mods.

There are not many man United players I would ever take to my heart but Bobby Charlton is one. A true gentleman and one the very greatest English players, if not the best. I was privileged to see him many times on the Turf or at Old Trafford. He had it all, what a player. RIP.

Heard this news during the second half yesterday at Brentford - we know he was suffering with dementia but still a sad day that one of our greats has gone. Only Geoff Hurst remains now from that England winning team from 1966 and I think only Terry Paine, Ian Callaghan and George Eastham from then entire squad.

Sad day without a doubt.
