Tonight's game

Post by COBBLE » Mon Apr 29, 2024 9:57 pm

If we are in the EFL next season and PNE are the benchmark I think it will be Carnival time. The gap between the EFL and Premier League is enormous.

Agreed. PNE were sniffing around the play offs until very recently and they were terrible, absolutely terrible.

We certainly will be very good in the Championship, but only if we don't lose too many players.

Ipswich play their game in hand tonight away at Coventry - I could see them losing that.

Tonight is absolutely huge because if Ipswich take anything from tonight's game, they have their fate in their own hands for the finale at weekend. Anything less than a point and they're relying on Leeds not beating Saints as Leeds have superior goal difference. Ipswich having Udders at home to finish must make them pretty confident of clinching it, IF they can go into the game knowing it's entirely up to them

While there is an undoubted gulf between the Premier League and Championship, PNE fans were saying that was one of their worst performances in quite a while, even suggesting some had downed tools. While the manager has them about par in the league, he's very unpopular with a lot of the support.

I've watched a lot of Championship game's this season and a lot of PNE game's, this wasn't a one-off they've been poor all season along with the rest of the league, we'll be fine next season

Worth bearing in mind Leicester, who were meant to ‘walk’ this league, let a 12 point lead slip and only just confirmed their promotion with a few games spare. Leeds, arguably the best squad on paper, may not even make top 2. Think there needs to be a bit more respect afforded to a league that has chewed up and spat out some bigger clubs than ours.

I think this is a pretty sensible approach to the Championship. We will be one of the better teams in the league, but not guaranteed to be THE best. We still have gaps, who is going to score the goals? No Left Back etc...

Having watched a fair bit of championship football this season due to the Prem just being less enjoyable to watch, I'd think we're streets ahead of the majority of teams in the championship. I'd imagine fans of most teams in the Championship would swap their manager and team for ours if they had the chance.

I think we'll do very well indeed to be as ruthless as we were last season though. Anticipate it being a bit tighter than it was for us last season just because our achievement last season was quite remarkable. Depends on who we keep, sign, and which teams are promoted out of that league.

But I still stand by my comment a few weeks ago on another thread that predictions that we'd struggle in the championship next season are way off. We'd surely be competitive at least, should we be relegated this season.

obviously it all depends on who we keep and / or who comes in

and the Championship is so unpredictable games can some times go either way

but I just can't see how a team revolving around:

Muric / Esteve / O'Shea / Beyer / Cullen / Berge / Brownhill / Gudmundson/ Brun Larsen / Benson / Foster / Odobert / Koleosho and several others I've not included doesn't do anything other than do more than enough to be there or thereabouts

Foster and 99% of the midfield, we'll score goal's from all positions like last time

Ipswich have done well to get where they are .in general the standard in the Championship has been weak
Best scenario is an Ipswich win put Leeds in playoffs and watch them bomb at Wembley also Everton turning up at Luton and another win for us v Newcastle

Who was the last team to go straight from League One to the Premier League? Southampton maybe?

Ipswich themselves went from the Championship into Europe in the early 2000s, they have a habit of doing well after promotion.

Ipswich did the business last night and have seized the initiative and put promotion firmly back in their own hands, but it's not over. They still need a point at least from the Uddersfeeled game at weekend or Leeds could pip them. Yes, on paper Ipswich look to be pretty much over the line because of their "easier" fixture, but it's squeaky bum time and owt could happen.

If they don’t get a point from an already relegated, bar an almighty GD swing, Udders they don’t deserve to go up. They will win but late on.

They sure do have a habit of doing well after promotion - In 1960/61 Ipswich won the old Div 2 then in the next season won the First Division, knocking Burnley into second place. Had some success in European Cup season after.

Does a similar achievement, 60 years apart really qualify as a habit? I’m not so sure. But if they do ultimately secure successive promotions and get up it will be a tremendous effort.
