Mandibular Tori
Mandibular Tori
No, not a left back, winger, or any sort of footballer.
It's a condition I have, which is a bone growth on the inside of both sides of my lower jaw. It's quite impressive, according to the consultant I've seen at the hospital. Apparently it's fairly rare, like 6% of population.
I'm going to have an operation to cut them out. This consists of cutting the skin of my gums and chiselling the bone away, then grinding it to smooth it off.
I think it's going to be painful.
I'm only posting this to see there's an off chance that anyone else has experienced this and can tell what to expect.
I think I'm on soup for a while.

Re: Mandibular Tori
I've had two operations that required having my gum cut and bone removed from my jaw. They were not the same operation as yours but both had relatively little post op pain one night of painkillers and could eat soft foods normally next day - with caution. i hope your procedure has a similar outcome. Good Luck.

I thought you'd been tasered in a Spanish bar.
Seriously though, best of luck with the operation.

Can I ask *why* you're having these bones chiselled away? Why not just leave them?
Obviously no need to answer if you don't want to. I'm asking because I have the same inside my lower jaw.

Re: Mandibular Tori
Hi Rowls, they have been growing for years and are now starting to cause problems.
They nearly meet in the middle. Also I can get food trapped between them and my gum line.
Recently I visited the dental Hygienist and he managed to cut the skin of one which then had sharp bone sticking through. I ended up having to break it away with my finger nails. It was painful, not the bone but the broken skin and the sharp points on my tongue.
They are also causing obstruction when talking.

You should've come on here to ask earlier rather than suffering for so long. I can't be the only one with a Stanley knife and a Dremel; we could have sorted them in half an hour.

Will have to keep a beady eye on my own.
Re: Mandibular Tori
I've got them too. Didn't realise they were rare..
Re: Mandibular Tori
I thought mine were from being punched on both sides back in the early 20s. They could be, but the experts really don't know what causes them. The naming comes from the lower jaw being named the Mandible and the bone growth is taken from the Bull horns. Tori being plural, ie both jaws. If was just one side it's Taurus.
If it's on the upper jaw then it's Palantular
Re: Mandibular Tori
Well, there're gone. Still on the ward and a bit numb, but all seems fine. I don't know what it's going to be like when the pain kicks in though. Plenty of soup prepared, apparently 10 days of no "hard" food. Guinness it is then!

Kinel Jel. Punched on both sides in the early 20’s. Great to see you still going strong in your 100’s…Jel wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 9:58 pmI thought mine were from being punched on both sides back in the early 20s. Re: Mandibular Tori
6% of the population sounds quite a lot to me. Approx. 1200 people on the turf will have it then?
Bodies are weird. I found out fairly recently that what I thouught was my inner ankle going out of line was actually a bone spur that has grown on the inner ankle bone - apparently from what the doctor said, somehting must have hit or clipped the bone at some point so it grew a spur...

Re: Mandibular Tori
Mandible being the jaw bone, so makes sense. Try "cold stuff" (medical term lol) and probably best with soft food / liquids for a bit.
Re: Mandibular Tori
That's right. The Tori bit is a description of the shape of the bone growth. It resembles a bulls horn.hoosier-daddy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 14, 2024 10:37 pmMandible being the jaw bone, so makes sense. Try "cold stuff" (medical term lol) and probably best with soft food / liquids for a bit.

Speedy recovery. Sounds like a political condition.
For a moment I thought Kier Starmer had mixed up the new leader of that other party.
