Kierby hotel sold

Post by Tw@ » Sat May 18, 2024 1:21 pm

Apparently the Kierby hotel was sold yesterday and is going to be demolished with a new Hilton hotel replacing it.

Good news for the town if true, hopefully the businesses around are not too badly affected in the short term.

It won't be an Hilton hotel but it could be a Hampton by Hilton hotel

Would be pleasantly surprised if it’s a Hilton or one of their affiliates.

Should make a big difference to the area if true. I have my doubts after a quick google search with no news articles returned about it, but it would be great news if it's happening. Burnley town centre doesn't seem a natural fit for a Hilton Hotel but there's definitely a lack of recognisable hotel chains and restaurants in the town centre. Maybe they've seen an opportunity that others haven't.

Echo the sentiments above for the impact for the small business on or near the premises.

If it's true I bet it will be finished before the town to Turf fiasco. Also let's hope it's a decent hotel not one of these half-way houses for the likes of released offenders, asylum seekers etc, there are enough back street places for them courtesy of Calico and the numerous cowboy landlords with HMO's springing up across town.

Yeah, you’d have expected the council’s social media team to be shouting about it.

It’ll end up being another pound store.

Whatever's replacing it is pretty much secondary.
Just flatten the bloody thing.

They could put a lovely roundabout with a tree in the middle in its place.

Off topic slightly but it's a shame that the original market hall was torn down. Complete pie in the sky but it would be great if it was rebuilt. They're absolutely bustling at the weekend in other towns. Shame.

Where the Kierby is concerned though, a wooden shack would look better than what's currently there.

I don't see it being a hotel, there's literally no need for one is there. With crow wood, holiday inn, premier inn, travel lodge. Can't see the demand for a big town centre hotel

Such a shame much of old Burnley was demolished, such as the market hall and surrounding cobbled streets and parts of St James's Street.

The original buildings with their character stonework would now look fantastic if respectfully renovated. So much better than the dreary concrete blocks that we now have.

Replaced in haste in the name of progress to try and move the town on from its heavy industrial past which was possibly a good idea at the time but with hindsight, it wasn't unfortunately.

Ah yes I'm sure a bit of grass and some flowers would be a nightmare. It looks like they've already put some new trees and flower beds in the new bit going round towards the bus station so it could end up looking quite good if they can get rid of the Keirby.

This is absolutely brilliant news if true.

Not so good if it’s a Hampton by Hilton being built, they tend to be fairly basic buildings with zero architectural quality, but let’s be honest anything would be better than what’s there now!

They must be in the same state as the building then with reception being as bad as it is in Burnley Town Centre nowadays.

They’ve even got a Hampton in Rochdale , which is a true town of death . However as it’s a large ish urban sprawl with almost no hotels in the town centre , it fits their profile . They’re just mid range competitively priced hotels run as franchises. Pity they’ve still got the hideous Motel style signs they use in the US. Though even a glass tower would be an improvement on the old Kierby palace of romance .

There are enough of shops in Burnley Town centre, just look at the empty ones so it won't be retail, I just can't see enough trade for a hotel as mentioned earlier there are enough hotels, an entertainment complex has just been finished so rule that out, therefore I think just make an open space perhaps a decent fountain and perhaps a place for a statue for Jimmy Anderson.

All the other hotels are further away though - i don't think they would commit to building a hotel if they didn't think there was capacity. Football fans at the weekends and mid week games perhaps, business stays during the week...

Anything would be an improvement on what is there now though.

Just can't see it, the occupancy rates relying on football fans and who actually would opt to stay there when Crow Wood, the Oakes etc are minutes away.

I don’t think a developer would buy a hotel to knock it down and leave some open space.

Fans that arrive on the train and will use a site like booking.com and look for closest to the centre and to the ground perhaps? If i was looking on a map, I don't think many of the other hotels bar probably premier inn would register for me if I didn't have my car with me.

I agree there are lots of choice but if you have an option of a hotel that has the ground with a short walk, all the shops and bars/pubs etc. It is a no brainer to me. The only thing that would put me off is if it was loads more expensive than the others. I don't think it would be in comparison to Crow Wood for example.

I could see a market for a town centre place. Would be good for the town centre too I would imagine.

Burnley has a thriving and growing investment in businesses - this will bring in more visitors so its not all about the footy.

What a mess, it needs bulldozing soon as possible.

There is more chance of a bronze statue of a certain Burnley plumber being erected than there is of having a new hotel built out of Ashlar sandstone. Have you any idea how expensive it is? We are Burnley, not Bahrain.
