Taylor Swift...Is She All That?

Post by ElectroClaret » Wed Jun 05, 2024 9:03 pm

Starts her UK tour Friday in Edinburgh (i think).
Question is, is she that good?

Love to hear especially from people who've actually seen her live.

Or is it all just hype?

The ones who work the system best are not generally the most talented musicians.

Apparently she is charging £70 each for hoodies.

Disgustingly greedy if true.

Played a blinder with having to remake her previous albums and that made her a lot of money

She churns out a lot of songs that her fanbase enjoy, gets a lot of money via streaming revenue and of course tours

She works incredibly hard, seems to have a very good grasp of how to make money from various methods and fair play to her

We’ve probably all heard at least one of her songs, such is their popularity on the radio etc

With the way the music industry has changed in the last 20yrs, someone was always going to be riding the crest of the wave and she made sure it was her

Similar to when MTV came along and Michael Jackson rode that wave

They were €90 at Springsteen and Ts started at €50. I didn’t bother.

She apparently gives a ton of money to charity.
My 11 yr old daughter can't stand her music but thinks she's a very good person.

Not my kind of music, but she's very talented and works her backside off. She writes her own stuff, plays instruments, and puts on a good show which lasts around 3 hours. She rehearses for these whilst running on a treadmill, or so my wife tells me.

Not sure the Beatles deliberately made 4 different versions of their album covers as a cash grab

She’s a generational talent who has achieved astronomical heights.

But, some old bloke on Up The Clarets thinks she’s bobbins so she must be.

Not a massive fan but her two albums Folklore and Evermore co-written with Aaron Dressner of The National and featuring Justin Vernon are excellent.

She is just about to, or has already become a billionaire, so all power to her. Considering all the top musicians of my generation were ripped off by their management, she has obviously been well advised.
Her music, I have to say, I'm not fully familiar with. I do listen to all kinds of music, including more recent than TS but I can't say I have an opinion on her music.
I'm a big fan of Raye.

Folklore and Evermore are great records. Written with a couple of guys from The National and reminiscent of their sound.

Had some excellent pop songs outside of those - Blank Space and Cruel Summer are particularly good.

To answer the original question - No.

But - in terms of marketing, choice of musical partners and capturing the spirit of the time, she’s one smart cookie

File under one of those artists that it’s not cool to say you like, but somehow annihilates the charts, fills stadium tours for fun and has multiple awards. See also: Coldplay.

Fwiw, I think she’s had a few decent pop tunes over the years and has done well to purchase her back catalogue, re-record it and improve it. By all accounts she is very financially savvy. By the same token, she’s now a billionaire in her mid 30’s, never married, childless and still singing teenage angst songs about breakups and boys but somehow still manages to keep her fans identifying with her.

Fair play.

The worst thing about Adele is all the BGT wannabes wailing her songs in every city centre in the country. If you're gonna sing on the streets, at least sing something uplifting.

All I know is she’s the biggest music star on the planet by far. So fair play to her. Kids are obsessed over her.

One of my mates has got 2 tickets for him and his young daughter to see her in Edinburgh for her birthday. £1200 for the tickets, with a hotel in Edinburgh and spends be looking at around £2000. Madness.

His daughter said to him the other day ‘Dad, are you not betting me anything else to open on my birthday’ You could go away for 2 weeks all inclusive for what he’s paid.

Worse than that she put a different ‘special edition track’ on each one guaranteeing that the swifties would buy them all or pester their parents so they had all the tracks!! Disgusting money grab!

My wife will become an axe murderer if she saw this thread.

Taking her to see Taylor next weekend in Liverpool. Can't stand the music or TS, but it makes her happy so I guess that's why we all like different type of music I guess.

Heard her stuff on the radio, not my thing at all, but she knows how to make money. As far as female artists are concerned, there are plenty ahead of her for my money.
Adele
Amy
Annie Lennox
Gladys knight
Dionne Warwick
Gaga
Debbie Harry
Chrissie Hynde
Beverley knight
Faith hill
To name but a few. There will be more for sure.

Fair play to her though, she’s dominating the marketplace.

To be fair in the 60's the top bands / artists like The Beatles, The Monkeys, Buddy Holly etc didn't even write their own songs so they were really just performers

Honestly don’t know any of her records but she’s probably great. It’s just I’m middle aged.

No doubt she’ll turn up at Glastonbury in a year or two and she’ll be absolutely brilliant, a bit like Miley Cyrus was.

To be fair, though. The Monkees didn't write their own songs. They were basically a manufactured TV company boy band with a team of songwriters behind them.
