VAR to Stay

Post by Darthlaw » Thu Jun 06, 2024 1:48 pm

PL clubs vote 19-1 in favour of keeping VAR.

Wolves the only ones to vote to bin it.

Were we in that vote or has the “transfer” between leagues happened?

The 19 clubs can't complain about VAR now if the idiots have voted for it

Which club official votes?

I cant imagine it would have been 19-1 if the managers were voting

The PL sent aomthing out yesterday to all the clubs that Saif VAR had only made 5 incorrect decisions this year apparently. Strange figures.

Pretty sure this was the meeting where we handed back our Premier League share along with Sheff Utd and Luton therefore Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton became Premier League clubs.

If that’s correct then it definitely means they don’t know what they're doing. More like 25.

So after all the commotion caused by Notts Forest, they want to keep it. Odd.

A far more sensible approach would have been giving the clubs the vote on - shall we remove the VAR officials 1st thought of protect me mate at all costs and actually ask them to do the job they are meant to do

Absolutely. And if it’s not 0, bin it, as it’s clearly no good. ( Which we already know is correct ).

I nearly got angry for a minute then realised I don’t care next season.

Who knows, after another season of tinkering they may have it sorted for our return to the PL.

If people (supporters) would educate themselves on how VAR works and how the officials come to their respective decisions then there wouldn't be so much controversy over it.

Until anyone can say with 100% certainty what handball is, or whether a player is offside then VAR can never work properly as it's impossible to give correct answers to both.

I think the off-side bit is pretty much accepted as 'working'.

Subjective handball is nothing new, so don't start laying that at VAR's door.

When was the last time you saw a Maradona or an Henri type handballed goal in the last five years? They are the real gut wrenches that have been eliminated.

Anyone who says they are happy for a goal to be ruled out, because a player wearing size 11 boots, his toe might, and I stress might be 2 millimetres offside according to a technology that’s incapable of being accurate. Or his shirt sleeve might be the same.

Just isn’t a football fan.

VAR killing the beautiful game one decision after another.

What about a player who doesn't touch the ball but is offide? and how can you tell if they block the view of a goal keeper?

That's down to the opinion of the ref isn't it?

Clubs vote for a system which has been proven to be inaccurate, and which is run by a company with a monopoly who allow personal issues to overrule facts. Only in the Premier League.

No, just no. Offside was introduced to stop attackers gaining an unfair advantage, being millimetres in front of a defender is not unfair, it’s just better anticipation.

There is an absolutely massive “might be” as it’s utterly impossible to adjudge the precise exact moment when the ball leaves the boot of the previous player . Consequently decisions based on millimeters are inherently flawed / guesswork. The Coventry disallowed winner in the FA Cup semi-final being one example with massive consequences .

Couple of related problems with why VAR was kept yesterday.
• Clubs and some fans who want VAR do so because they believe they will get more right decisions, but they rarely consider that they also benefit from bad decisions. There’ll always be winners and losers.
• Clubs accept the negative impact on the game because of greed. More points equals more money, and because VAR is going to give them more ‘right’ decisions that’s all that matters to them.

Wolves have been evidenced as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, victims of VAR and decisions going against them. So even from them it was self-centred. But at least they made big points about the impact on the game as a spectacle. The PL sooner or later needs to heed these warnings because very few decisions they make improve the sport as a spectacle.

The poster above mentioning lack of understanding of what VAR is meant to get involved with does have a point. There is a lot fingers in ears from fans when they feel they have been wronged and someone tries to explain why VAR did/didn’t intervene. I’m totally anti-VAR we’ve got subjective decisions on the pitch from humans, being reviewed in a studio adding subjective VAR guidance, being reviewed days later by another bunch of humans to say whether the referee applied subjective ref rules right and did the VAR apply subjective rules right. They then dress all this up as facts and pat themselves on the back. It’s no wonder fans can’t keep up, and to be fair don’t care about the nuances of how rules should be applied either on the pitch or by VAR.

It’s a mess and it’s unlikely to get better. Humans make mistakes, and humans will be ignorant, and VAR will continue to disrupt games. If it was down to me, use tech for fully automated decisions, i.e. goal line technology, but other than that keep it true to its routes.

Do whatever you feel is right for you

I was just asking seen as VAR was brought in to remove errors and you have people watching as many action replays as they want how to do still get basic things wrong. You are the one defending it's use so you can explain how you see fit.
