Re: Euro 2024
We only utilised Wout properly in like two games -one of which was Brighton away with Cork playing as well and we moved the ball really well and passed into feet... The next game it was back to type with Westy hoofs into the corner.
It's a shame Dyche didn't keep that team, imo we'd have stayed up.

Re: Euro 2024
I don’t know for certain but he didn’t want to last time, so I’m guessing he’s of the same mind.
Re: Euro 2024
Imagine being one of those weird Burnley fans that have slagged him off whenever possible for believing in his ability to play at the highest level for his country.

Re: Euro 2024
Always felt at the time that seemed a Kompany call, Weghorst didn't get many minutes in preseason either. Plus hes well known for being outspoken, can't see that meshing with Kompany.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 3:43 pmWell done Wout.
Would like to know if him loaning last season was his choice or VKs. Obvs he doesnt want to play in the EFL but in the PL he may have been keen. I suspect he wasnt Vinny's cup of tea and that was probably a big error.
Quality player though and would love for him to stay with us. Wish he hadn't been loaned out last year.

Re: Euro 2024
Can’t do it in the Premier League (37 games, 2 goals) but he can bloody notch in tournament football.
I have to say, I’d give him a go in the Championship if nobody was willing to outright buy him this summer. He probably doesn’t fancy that but it’s about time we gave him a chance to contribute for us. Then again, I said that last summer and he was booed by our own fans in Belgium.

Both very good players with differing skillsets - Wood bagged 14 goals last season in 31 games for Forest, that's really good going.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 3:49 pmIt was weird wasn’t it. Imagine thinking Wood was better![]()

Re: Euro 2024
He's a poacher. The squad we have now is better than every other side in the Championship. He'd be perfect for us this coming season.
If he gets on with the new manager and is ready to pull his socks up and do a season with us, then we should get behind him.

Amazing.
Excellent match. Feel sorry for the Poles.
We won't see many better games than that in the competition.

Re: Euro 2024
I always liked him but his stats in the Premier League are not great for a striker. That said if the international Weghorst turned up at club level, he be way out of our league so his inconsistency must be one of his major weaknesses given you can’t deny some of his ability.

Re: Euro 2024
He started well for us, as a player, but the lack of goals eventually got to him and his confidence went.
I’d like to know the split between his goals as starter and those as a sub for Holland. The only ones I can remember were as a sub.

Re: Euro 2024
Barnes was brilliant in his last season for everything bar scoring goals, Weghorst is similar in British football, not about goals scored but connects play, distracts defenders and makes other players look better. Utd went on a great run when he joined them, without him really scoring. Would have been great last season.
Will bring a few quid in this summer.

Perhaps the Weghorst fan boys can get to grips that it’s possible to be sh1te for one club and good for your national team . He was poor for us and almost as poor in a studded ( yet chaotic) Man Utd side .Still a decent player but It didn’t work out for him or us , can’t people just move on and accept the loss ?

Re: Euro 2024
I've said a few times and still maintain - even if Weghorst was seemingly signed as a Wood replacement I don't believe he was targeted as one but as a partner and that disconnect between Pace and Dyche was involved. We didn't play Wout in the Wood role, we didn't always maximise him which would have involved a different formation that could have left our midfield thin but Jay was playing the Wood role and Wout the Jay/Barnes role. Firmly believe if he had been targeted by Dyche before January 2022, it was to partner Wood and replace Jay, and that that would have been a sensible effective partnership.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 3:52 pmBoth very good players with differing skillsets - Wood bagged 14 goals last season in 31 games for Forest, that's really good going.
They're both good players but hugely different, being tall is their only similarity.

Re: Euro 2024
To be fair though, half a season playing for us wasn’t really long enough for us to label him as “poor”.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:07 pmPerhaps the Weghorst fan boys can get to grips that it’s possible to be sh1te for one club and good for your national team . I’ve always thought he could do a decent job for us, either in the Premier League or the Championship. I know it’s been well documented that apparently he won’t play Championship football, however he is under contract to play for Burnley Football Club and the right manager just might get a good season out of him as he is better than any striker we currently have at the club
And when people come on this board and say he is not even Championship standard even though he is an established Dutch International, well that’s just laughable.
I’m waiting for all of his detractors to pile on this thread as the current silence is deafening.

Re: Euro 2024
Just looking at the England starting line up and if you complain you need your head read and should take a month off.
That is a superb starting 11. Saka has been brilliant and then you have Bellingham, Foden and Kane with him.

Southgate always was a big fan of uptheclarets and has attributed a lot of his success to what he read on here from the plethora of tactical genii that abound the site.

Re: Euro 2024
He either refused to play or had it in his contract he would get loaned out in the Championship because he was told by the Dutch manager he had to be in a top flight league to get in the World Cup team.
Dyche spoke of Weghorst having great work ethic and attitude and even said that he felt some of his early struggles were Wout was trying too hard and being a bit too selfless on the pitch.
He's been known for runins with teammates but pretty much always over lack of effort from the teammates not him, he'd become unpopular at Wolfsburg because he was criticising teammates' work rate.
He's got a very strong opinion and Dutch bluntness, has an ego like most footballers do, but nothing about him has ever struck me as bad attitude so much as a very driven character who can be abrasive and critical. Some people can put up with that some can't.

Weghorst was playing quite well under Jackson and we were getting results, then ..... after a home defeat against a very good Villa side, Jackson left him out in a game that we needed to win at Spurs .... prefering to bring in ..... Kevin Long.
Weghorst hasn't started for us since.
