Scott Parker's first press conference

Post by ClaretTony » Mon Jul 08, 2024 10:28 am

Picking this up from information tweeted by someone at the BBC.

Parker says he had other offers before taking the Burnley job but it wasn't the "right time" and wanted to "recharge".

"It was a long, thorough process to get to this position. That is a positive because you get to know the ownership and where they see the football club."

"We all have something to prove, a team that was relegated last year. Not just me but everyone associated with the football club."

Parker on whether club is set for an immediate return to the top-flight: "Yeh, for sure. It is a Premier League football club and we have to try our damned hardest to get back there. We will endeavour to do that."

Parker says he has spent time working with Thomas Tuchel since leaving Club Bruges in March 2023. "Incredible manager, seeing him work and picking up advice from him was pretty good."

Parker on Club Bruge: "It didn't work out and it was a bad experience. 10 weeks in a club is not enough time."

"The fans have a vital role to play for us. They can be the driving force that I need and the players need. I am hoping they get behind us."

Very relieved about that. That’s a huge back room team but I’m pleased we’ll have that continuity.

Interesting that Scott Parker opted for a classic shirt and suit jacket for his club interview, showcasing a timeless and professional look. But for the presser, he's freshened things up with a light grey jumper, adding a touch of casual sophistication. It's like he's channeling a blend of business casual and laid-back elegance, a sartorial strategy that says, 'I can lead this team with both style and ease.'

Makes the right noises, he needs our support to settle up north and offer encouragement to him and the team. Interesting to see he is not the manager but head coach. I hope Pace or JJ or whoever owns us, isn’t wanting to choose the players we buy or sell as can happen in the US.
Wishing him the club and the team all the best.

I'm sure Scott Parker will have the final say on incomings. The sale of players may be a different matter.

I think he will be wanting to right a few wrongs. Quietly optimistic.

Yeah usually in similar setups, the manager has a veto.

Looking at his record at Brugge supports his view he didn’t get long enough

League
Won 2 (including home to Genk who became champions) drawn 6 lost 2 (his first game with 10 men away to Genk and last game away to Oostende in bottom 3 between two Europe losses
Europe
Lost two legs to Benfica in last 16 7-1 and sacked after losing 5-1 away

Before he joined they lost 3 (two at home) and drew 1 of their last 4

Enjoyed that interview to be honest. He comes across as a very measured man who I think is acutely aware of his own failings at his last couple of jobs and seems to have a fire in his belly to prove himself to us. Interesting he mentioned Wout in a context of wanting to work with him - certainly proves the point, before it's stated again, that there is nothing contractual to stop Weghorst from playing for us in the Championship other than his own desire to get out of Burnley (i.e, no clause).

Glad he's a fan of Cullen - he's going to be the glue in the team again just like 22/23. I'd make him captain.

Abysmal editing but he said all the right things.

We can be pragmatic if the forward players are given the licence to hurt teams.

If we are solid at the back, I'm very confident we'll bounce straight back.

Hopefully he's watched as many games as possible from the past two seasons, there's plenty of information for him to soak up before the season starts.

Nice to see the positivity to Scotty. A number have quite rightly said that they hope he settles up north. I doubt whether he will want to leave his home in Surrey, but do we know or assume he will be in a hotel in the Burnley area or rent accommodation locally (as per Dyche and Woan did)

Watched the follow up with Radio Lancs.

He seemed a lot more relaxed in that one-on-one scenarios than he did in the press conference or the unveiling interview from last week.

In terms is settling in the north, he did play for two full seasons at Newcastle (one of them as captain, lifting the Intertoto Cup).

He seemed a bit nervous and guarded (which I understand) and clearly was shocked by his dismissal by Bruges. Sensible to take a break before returning to management. I wish him every success but it’s no easy gig !

Cheers to those who posted the links.

Seemed very serious and guarded on the main one much more relaxed on the BBC Lancs one.

Despite my initial feelings about his appointment I’m fully behind him now and I did like / appreciate some of his responses. If he gives us a team that works hard and competes week in week out he’ll do for me.

I’m not sure where he’d get an easier one at Championship level to be honest.

He has a squad of about 35 players to chose from, all of them would likely get in any other championship team and all he has to do is select his best 25 notwithstanding the dynamics of who wants to leave.

Not like he’s coming in to an average squad he really needs to add to.

Who’s this cool customer?

Ice white shoes, ice white socks with navy blue double cadet stripe, a pair of shorts, t-shirt with chevron action flash. ‘L’homme du sport! A tossed pink sweater that says I’m in Paris and nothing’s going to stop me

Just throwing it out there but I've changed my mind. He seems like the sensible type of appointment we need, understands the level, and plays a similar type of football to what we've recruited for.

Got a little feeling that we may have got it right by not going for the big name.
