Great interview. He’s one of a number of players that could easily be England captain. COE!!

Then he needs to buck his act up because he's been poor this tournament

Been the weak link in midfield for yonks now.

Still really don't see what he brings for England.

Rice has had a terrible tournament.
Let's not forget that in his last game against Holland, he was out muscled for the ball which led to their goal. He then had a great chance at the back post, and he just panicked and messed up.
In the 1st half against Denmark, he passed the ball forward once. He was slowing everything down and just going backwards and sideways instead of feeding Foden and Bellingham. On quite a few occasions, Foden has had words with him and Micah Richards rightly pointed this out.
Much more is needed from him in the final and I really hope that he pulls his finger out..
Always interviews well and gets in camera shots when the team are celebrating, but he will soon become the understudy to Wharton.

Rice has started to believe the hype.He is a big lad but can't tackle and prefers a back or sideways pass to a forward one.He has great skill going past a man but doesn't bother
His cba attitude does dominate his games at times.Spain will go through him like a dose of salts.Lets hope Walker is on his game to bail him out.

He’s a terrific player for West Ham and Arsenal as a box to box midfielder, but he doesn’t really play that role for England.

Maybe he's tired, playing for two clubs at the time must surely take it's toll?

I read a stat earlier that he's made the second most tackles and interceptions in the tournament and actually beats Rodri on most of the important stats so far. He's someone you'd notice was missing if he wasn't playing.

So who would you prefer in your team, Rice or Rodri?

Rice is nowhere near Rodri's level. But it's difficult to compare as they play differently.

Rodri. But that's irrelevant, as my point wasn't that Rice is a better footballer. The point was the stats suggest he's had a good tournament so far, possibly better than Rodri and hasn't been as bad as some above are suggesting.

Can you tell me which stats category Rice’s cock up against Netherlands came under?

Rice is a typical English midfielder. Fine in a dominant team but when he's given little quick passes into his feet with pressure coming behind him he panics. He doesn't have the awareness and composure to keep handling the ball in the tightest of spaces like Modric, Xavi, Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Rodri and the likes do. I think Wharton has it but of course he didn't get a minute.

I'd give the job to Pochettino and ask him to create a team that wants the ball and wants to show flair on the ball.

I think Rice has been excellent in his role for England in this tournament.

I don't understand those "emojis". if they are meant to be laughs perhaps you could explain why you think Rice didn't do exactly what he was expected to do in his position.

Shocking tournament. Did his ball winning but then had only two options, back to Stones or to the opposition.
One of many that were so far off their club form: Kane, Foden, Bellingham. I don’t believe Bellingham and Foden can play together, to similar, much like Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes.

He's been quite clumsy in possession in this tournament. What I mean by that, is that he completes a huge amount of passes, but large amounts are to the wrong foot of the receiver or the wrong side of them, so they have to check - and it kills momentum.

I don't watch him enough for Arsenal to know if that's how he plays for them, but the stats may say he's completed more passes than Rodri, but there's no stats for quality of them. And that's why Rodri sets the tempo and dictates it, and Rice doesn't.

Think people are being a bit harsh on Rice. Last 16 game he was one of the only one's who turned up. Walker, Trippier, Foden and Kane were all much worse.

I see Walker getting a lot of stick for their winner and maybe he was to far infield but Cucarella ran from FB and where was Saka? Even an early shout might have got Walker out to him.

People probably are being harsh on him and maybe that’s because expectations were high after his impressive season with Arsenal.
He was asked to play a different role and didn’t have the quality of players around him that he has been used to at Arsenal and this may have accounted for his minimal impact on the England team. Shame as I expected a lot more from him.

Agree all. I thought he was poor. 90% negative and regardless of any instructions, no excuse for killing momentum when the space is obvious. I still blame Southgate for clipping his wings so brutally. Easy to fix for next manager, ask your pivot/ holding midfielder to look for positive pass first and be 30% more aggressive, it really is that simple to change the entire flow of the team. That and chose pace up front- now we know Kane (who deserved some loyalty) is spent.

Interesting views on it.
I got the impression that he was the epitomy of GS's England: risk averse, tidy and unspectacular, conservative... call it what you will. Clearly employed to "sweep" in front of the back 4. I think he did OK in this respect.

Rice had a great season with Arsenal, and is undoubtedly a great footballer, but as others I thought he was very poor in the Euros.
Very wasteful in possession. He'll be back stronger than ever I'm sure.
