Penny for a pinch of sh1t that's nailed on & we'll be having the same sort of conversation about the new bloke hammering him when we bail out of the WC. It's a perpetual cycle of hoping the dice rolls the right way.fanzone wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 7:38 pmSouthgate has achieved that much and done so well that the English FA will look to a foreign manager to better what he has managed to do over the last 4 tournaments.
As the old saying goes results over performances, although he never got us over the finish line he came close and I highly doubt the next few managers will achieve half he has.
Southgate has resigned.

Re: Southgate has resigned.
He should have gone a few years ago. Dreadful manager got caught up in the whole negative 'cannot fail the nation' mindset and passed that attitude down to our young players
Let us be honest, the only time we looked decent this tournament is when were behind. And when we got level again, we looked rubbish. Rubbish manager

Just hope the next manager brings enjoyment back to the national team. Win or lose.
I have never been so bored watching england as the last 8 years. Tepid, insipid, dire football.

I will be inable to remember anything about our last 3 tournaments in a short while. Italia 90 and our euros in 96 are still very clear in my mind and how much I enjoyed them.
The devastation of exits in both still **** me off. Wanted us to win on Sunday but it was not really devastating. Especially as we lost to the most exciting team in the tournament

apparently watching harry kane staggering around as though he's got some amazonian blow-dart in his neck means success.

I am telling you now, Eddie Howe is not on 11 million pounds per year, or just over £200k a week.dougcollins wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 5:23 pmI think Howe is reportedly paid twice what Southgate is currently paid.
I just don't see him going for this. Potter may be the only one who would want it.

none of you know what his wage is but the butchers bit seems attractive to a saucier like me.

It’s being reported this morning that Eddie Howe is on up to 6 million pounds a year including bonuses etc.

Because I remember the stuff that went before, and an awful lot of that was absolute toss.

Ultimately though, if England won a major trophy people wouldn't care less how they did it.grapidianclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 9:21 pmJust hope the next manager brings enjoyment back to the national team. Win or lose.

History books never describe how a team plays.

What about the 20 years between then and Southgate taking over?grapidianclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 9:25 pmI will be inable to remember anything about our last 3 tournaments in a short while. Italia 90 and our euros in 96 are still very clear in my mind and how much I enjoyed them.

I remember some absolute garbage prior to GS’s two finals and a SF in 4 tournaments. And btw, we were pretty awful for large bits of Italia 90.

The qualifying was pretty dire as well for 1990 with three 0-0 draws out of 6 games and coming second in the group to SwedenRicardoMontalban wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2024 12:05 pmWhat about the 20 years between then and Southgate taking over?

Swiftly followed up with the dud in Euro ‘92, and the less said about ‘94 the better.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2024 12:58 pmThe qualifying was pretty dire as well for 1990 with three 0-0 draws out of 6 games and coming second in the group to Sweden
This year has the feel of not living up to expectations but bloody hell, how people look at the last 4 tournaments and go “nah, not for me Clive” is mind blowing.

Great post, Squidgy, especially like your reference to the sense of entitlement that is becoming an 'every other year occasion' now. And just to backup/ support your last point a relative of mine told me the other day that since 2001 Spain or its club sides have won 27 finals. An incredible stat. Not sure what England's record is in the same time but it will be a long way off that.Squidgy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 7:59 pmQuoonbeatz,
It's that fans'/media sense of entitlement that has sucked the joy out of watching England, as if only winning a tournament matters and anything else is a total failure, which is really ******* stupid. Hopefully whoever is next can get that back but they have a hell of a job on their hands.
For many of us winning a tournament was not the only thing that matters. Having a real go at winning one matters.
The joy of watching England was sucked out of millions of England fans by the utter dross served up. We have some great players but they fail to deliver on many occasions as it seems flair was coached out of them.
8 wins out of 25 against the Worlds top 10 (one of which is us!) says it all.

But purely on results, if he'd done well at one tournament you could maybe question it but he did it at 3 so it's not a fluke. Bad managers don't get teams to 2 euro finals and a WC semi.

Re: Southgate has resigned.
I don't think you can accuse them of not having a go at winning a tournament. The last 2 euros they were beaten in the final, once on penalties and once by the best team in the tournament by a mile. I agree they are largely poor to watch - I only ever watch them in tournaments because all international football outside tournaments is total garbage - but who is to say they'd have performed as well as they did if they'd just listened to the thousands of armchair fans and played with a bit more flair? That's part of the sense of entitlement - we're miles better, we're just plating the wring way.Squidgy wrote: ↑Tue Jul 16, 2024 7:59 pmQuoonbeatz,

It'll be interesting to see who comes in because play like Dyche but get to a final and people won't be happy; play like Kompany (22/23!) and bomb out in quarter finals and people won't be happy. It's going to be hard to strike that balance so good luck to them. At the end of the day, only one team can win tournament so to come second in 2 of the last 3 isn't bad.

Wasn't the right time for Southgate to take the Burnley job. He's waiting for the Kex Gill bypass to open.
