Re: Friendlies
Well I’ve never heard one single player say that but I’ve heard many players saying it just wasn’t real at all and were pleased to get back to playing in front of crowds. Find me a professional footballer who prefers behind closed doors and I reckon he’s not a professional footballer.ŽižkovClaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 5:21 pmI'm a realist. The Hearts 'first team' friendly will be 2 periods of 75 minutes each. Hearts are playing 2 different teams and I presume we will do the same.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 4:23 pmThe u21 game tomorrow was advertised by Hearts some time ago but Burnley have made it a behind closed doors game.

Re: Friendlies
Sounds like brilliant preparation for the whole squad.
Maybe this is why they do them behind closed doors, so they can play extended halves (presumably with drinks breaks, etc.). Not that I’d mind paying for 150 minutes and getting to watch the whole squad.

Scott Twine...
... Apparently bagged a hat-trick today in a pre-season game against I believe Barnsley?
May still have a part to play for the Clarets!
I always believed he was going to be a late bloomer, just one of them that slips through the cracks and takes time to really kick on - will probably peak at 30 or so!
Who knows... perhaps more to come from Scott?

Good to hear, friendlies are friendlies but always nice to get a hat trick. Was really excited when we signed him, would love it if he could kick on with us.
Re: Scott Twine...
Hopefully players like Twine will feel they have a renewed opportunity to impress now in a meritocracy.
I thought his cameos in the last Championship season were creditworthy and I'd be happy to move out other players and retain Twine.

Re: Scott Twine...
I think I am one of the few who actually thinks he can make a very good player. He didn't have much luck the first season with us with injuries. He played very well at Bristol City with the manager he played for at MK Dons and now has more experience of the Championship.

Extracted from Bristol City:
Twine shines for Burnley
City transfer target Scott Twine scored a hat-trick for Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Barnsley, which will no doubt have left new Clarets manager Scott Parker impressed.
City have been in extended talks with Burnley over a deal to bring the 25-year-old playmaker back to Ashton Gate following his encouraging loan during the second half of last season. A decision has been increasingly delayed, first by Burnley’s long search for a replacement to Vincent Kompany and now Parker’s desire to run the rule over his squad.

Twine is a player who will continuously improve as he gets older because he’s an intelligent person as well as a skilled footballer. I’d love to keep him despite his previous shortcomings for us that were shaped by his injuries.

Re: Scott Twine...
I like how quickly he moves the ball, mostly very few touches. Under VK when he did play he got into some really smart positions when he did play and often wasn't found, I think there is a really useful player in there. I'd be getting rid of at least half a dozen before I got to his name on the list.

Decent player and a likeable character but he's at a point where he needs to play as much as possible to reach his potential and unfortunately I just don't see him starting week in week out for us with the players we have available.
There's also part of me that thinks if we're chasing automatic promotion then this season Scott Twine isn't the answer

Pretty much my view. I do think he’s got the attitude and work ethic that needs bringing back to this team / squad though.bumba wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 6:40 amDecent player and a likeable character but he's at a point where he needs to play as much as possible to reach his potential and unfortunately I just don't see him starting week in week out for us with the players we have available.

If Brownhill goes, which seems likely, he could do a job in the more advanced midfield role.

Re: Scott Twine...
Scored 6 goals in 35 league appearances for 2 average sides in Hull & Bristol City (no idea of minutes on the pitch in those appearances) so isn't hard to imagine he could do a decent job with a run of games. The issue would be fitting him in the team regularly which is why I think we would accept a decent offer.

I like Twine - there’s been the odd moment where I have thought yes he can play - unlike some signings last year
I hope he kicks on but won’t get too carried away - it’s a pre season friendly at the end of the day. I mean if they were of any relevance we would have been able to sell Jutkiewicz for millions

Re: Scott Twine...
Wishful thinking-he could not be more dissimilar to Josh whose game is all about breaking down play, tackling and pressing. Be interesting to see how Parker see Twine. Have to say Twine is one of only a few players where there is supposed interest from other Championship clubs, so they must see something in him

He didn’t offer too much in his limited appearances. More concerning I suppose is his disappointing times last season at Hull & Brizzle.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 5:59 amI could well be wrong, I've just not seen enough of him to think he'd do a job in a promotion challenging side, I think we've better players in his position at the club.

Re: Friendlies
I’m presuming the vast amount of pre season being played behind closed doors is mainly due to our seemingly huge squad /loans/newsignings/trialists etc ? allied to the unpredictable futures of a lot of those players .
Must be a nightmare for SP having to evaluate the squad , though hopefully an exiting challenge as well .

I just don’t understand the nightmare theory (a lot have said this). If I were a manager I’d far rather take ownership of a big squad with lots of talent (half has won the Championship with 101 points, the other half were big money buys many of whom have suitors from bigger clubs).AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 10:12 amI’m presuming the vast amount of pre season being played behind closed doors is mainly due to our seemingly huge squad /loans/newsignings/trialists etc ? allied to the unpredictable futures of a lot of those players .

I’d much rather be inheriting that, than say a team that have been stuck in the Championhip a few years, losing parachute money and stagnated/lost their best players. Or a team a bit further on in that process like Stoke or Rovers that have lost all of them!
It’s a lot easier planning who to discard (some will be taken out of his hands anyway) than trying to attract new players. But he’s already managed to sign 5 so he’s clearly being supported.
I’d say that’s just about an absolute dream position for a Championship manager to find himself in.
I hope he never presents it as such either. Will all come across “woe is me” and far too negative.
