Rocky Flintoff

Post by pushpinpussy » Thu Jul 18, 2024 6:19 pm

16 years old and hit a century for England Under-19s on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Looks a really good prospect. I see that Archie Vaughan son of Michael is also playing in the team.

Got me thinking. How many cricketers have followed their dads in playing for England.

I can think of Chris Broad and Stuart Broad.

Liam Botham had 1 season with Hampshire before turning to Rugby Union, then League.
His son James, Beefys grandson, plays rugby for Wales. He was born in Cardiff.

Did Mickey Stewart (father of Alec) play for England?

Arnie & Ryan Sidebottom.

David & Jonny Bairstow.

Granted, their dads didn't play many games.

Alan & Mark Butcher

Slightly different, Dean Headley's grandad was the West Indies great George Headley. I think his dad played for the Windies too.

Wasn't Chris Cowdrey put straight into the England team as captain at some point in the 80's?

The Ealham’s. Alan was a 12th man for England but still counts.

Interesting that in most of these examples only one of the pair had a notable international career.

I think so, he definitely captained England. His dad was in the first England team I can remember, he was an outstanding batsman but he'd struggle with today's game and the requirement to be able to field.

Think he only ever fielded as a 'slip'. Although he must have done an occasional mid on or mid off.
That's Colin Cowdrey.

No, cousins. One of four cousins who played first class cricket. Bill, Brian, Eric & Geoff Edrich were four brothers who played first class cricket.

Shows you how strong Lancashire's one day XI was in the 90s as I'd forgotten he played for England a few times. Good solid batsman but not one of the star performers

Excellent start. This competition has come at a good time for Lancs to blood some youngsters.
