John Hannah....something about his earnest, effete Scottish nice-guy schtick that really grinds my gears. Casting him as Rebus ....one of my favourite fictional characters..was an absolute crime.

In complete contrast to the superb Ken Stott. Now he does the books justice.

Gervais is good when he's got Merchant writing with him. He's the creative witty one. Also Gervais's stand ups on netflix have become truly tragic affairs where he comes across as a bitter old man just ranting about about trans people over and over again. He's done about 3 shows based on that and people abusing him on twitter.

It's a shame as his stuff before Derek was all brilliant. Not sure what happened between him and Merchant but I presume there's been a falling out of some sorts.

In terms of worst actors, the correct answer is Adam Sandler.

On a positive note, my all time favourite actor is Alec Guinness, a genius in any role, and I love the Smiley series.

He's done a couple of serious ones lately which were pretty good. One about diamonds and another where he's a basketball scout. I forget their names which, admittedly, doesn't suggest they're that memorable, but that's more down to my awful memory.

Re John Wayne, The Searchers film (as well as leading to the name of a great band) is highly thought of and the young Marion was a big part of that. Surely you don't get to play in 142 films without having some ability. I admit I mostly avoid his films as I do those of Sean Connery (even though he did some good work to - see The Offence.

I offer Mae West and WC Fields. Entertaining, yes, but they just played themselves.

All 3 characters soon became a bit predictable really, not exactly helped by their second rate scriptwriters.

I'm not having Sooty's name dragged through the mud. I'm 72 now and I still look out for him being on tv with the superb 'Sweep'. The waterpistol sketches are legendary but then along came 'Ramsbottom the snake' which rocketed the whole programme to a different level. And they all still look so youthful.

Hugh Grant was decent in the new Guy Ritchie film, The Gentleman, which is also a very good film. I couldn’t believe it was him at first.

Fantastic in that film, probably because he came away from the posh boy roles he usually plays.

Dream Scenario! I had no intention of contributing to this thread (enjoyable read though it is) until I saw that film named. Pure and utter dross, a storyline slower than a OJ Simpson car chase. I presume Cage received his paycheck and sighed 'thank God that is over'....

I watched it to the end. I could have turned it off. I was on a plane and could have switched to any number of other films immediately. But I stuck with it, just hoping for something interesting to happen... and then the credits rolled...

I have always thought Bill Nighy was a poor actor and never understood why he wins awards. He always seems rather stiff and uncomfortable.
