The Claret Pals - a crime thriller

Post by TonbridgeClaret » Sat Jul 27, 2024 10:33 pm

My 5th crime novel, The Claret Pals, is officially published tomorrow, although for some reason Amazon are already selling copies. The idea was given to me by a group of Burnley fans my wife and I often meet up with at away games. They asked me to write a crime thriller built around them, and that's exactly what I've done. I've used several locations in and around Burnley in the book, although most of the action takes place at away fixtures. I made contact with the club several times during the writing process, and I'm happy to say they've sent me email confirmation to say they had no objections to me using the club's name or other references.
The book describes the match day experience for the group, and includes several Burnley songs, which you will all know so well. However, it is not just about football, it's also a fairly gruesome crime thriller, so be warned! I would greatly appreciate any support the Up The Clarets community can provide, so I've posted a link below.
My wife and I have our tickets for Luton, so we'll see some of you there!
I will be doing a book signing at The Royal Dyche on 14th September (before the Leeds away fixture).

Will certainly give it a read on holiday in September.

Just a heads up, 14th September is the date of Leeds away, lunchtime kick off on Sky.

Tonbridge, I hope your publisher markets your book effectively. I'll see if I can get hold of a paperback. I had a crime novel published, but sales were disappointing due to zero marketing. It is about to be republished by another more progressive company, then followed up by the rest of the trilogy. All set in Tokyo in the early '90s. I take it you find writing therapeutic. I do. Best of luck with it.

Hi Nick.

Thanks for your advice. I've had 4 previous novels published, and the marketing on this one has been very good so far.

Good luck with any future books.

Hi Murger.

The club have said they might advertise the book in matchday programmes, although that hasn't been confirmed yet. I'm really hoping to get it into the club shop, but somehow I doubt it.

Hi Nick.

Sorry, I should have explained better. Two novels in a series were published by Red Dog Press (now taken over by Bloodhound Books) and two by SRL Publishing. The Claret Pals is with The Book Guild.

I fully agree with you about writing being therapeutic. Best of luck with your writing Nick, I hope your trilogy does well for you.

Ordered my copy. Having lived in Kent for over 50 years ( Herne Bay, Ramsgate and Broadstairs ) I wonder whether our paths may have crossed travelling to and from Burnley. Did you ever get involved with the London Clarets? I retired to Rochdale 8 years ago and surprisingly enough I love it here !! Good luck with the book, I am looking forward to reading it.

We may well have met at sometime. My wife and I have been travelling to Turf Moor 3 or 4 time a year for the past 20 years, plus we do about a dozen away fixtures each season. We thought about joining the London Clarets a few years ago, after stumbling into one of their gatherings at a pub in Lewes, when we were away at Brighton. I can't remember why, but we never did join.
Thanks for buying the book, I hope you enjoy it.

Interesting question. Yes, it's standard practice in publishing, I will receive royalties for books sold.
