We seemed to dominate the ball a lot more than I ever thought a Burnley side could do against a Spanish side.

Nice goal from Foster.
Yes, reasons to be (reasonably) cheerful.

Am I missing something? Why is foster 33-1 to be top goal scorer this season.

Nailed on for a 20plus season if he stays fit
Probably because he’s never even got into double figures in a season, and he’s got mental health issues.

A fitness game in extreme conditions. No cohesion first half. second half improved. Thought Koleosho and Pires impressed.

Parker sums it up fairly and accurately from my reckoning.

Game was much slower second half so maybe the reason we looked better. First half was full speed

Beyer has to start for me when fit.

I get the argument that O'Shea is better defensively and it's probably right but we're going to dominate possession over 90% of the league so hes going to have less chance to show his defensive acumen

Vs Beyer who can carry the ball, move it quicker and has a better eye for a pass. Surely that is the skillset we are more looking for when we have most of the ball.

I held off judgement on SP appointment until we could see what he actually has to offer, I’m certainly warming to him - a good sign methinks

We looked very good in the first 15 but then sloppy passes let them get a foothold in the game.

After they scored they lifted and we deflated for the rest of the half, it definitely knocked us out of our stride.

Second half we pressed much higher and got our reward immediately from a brilliant goal by Foster.

Overall a very good workout against a decent physical side.

Of the new signings:

Hladky - looked good IMO, (decent with his feet if not exactly Muric level) but overall he was confident and couldn't do much with the goal.

Pires - was excellent and gave us much more balance and energy on the left when he came on.

Hountondji - looks like he will be a threat and a real handful to deal with, he reminds me of Elijah Adebayo, definitely offers something different up top.

I've not yet seen Pires as didn't get to see the second half - anything like Maatsen?

To me he didn’t seem anything like Maatsen but that is partly down to the full backs not looking like they have the same role under Parker as they did under kompany

After watching Pires' performance on my lap top, so not ideal, I would say he is a much better and stronger defender than Maatsen, with good close control and distribution. He never got forward as much as Maatsen used to, but it wasn't that type of game.

A good work out and looks promising for next season.
We just have to get better at defending set pieces and corners...that was a big part of our downfall last season.
Basics really...if the ball comes into the box the defender has to get his head or foot on it at all costs.

A decent performance tbh against a decent side.
Positives:
1. The Centre back pairing is very solid and will be probably the best in the Championship. Pires showed that he can solve the leftside problem, which only really leave the right side for debate. Between Sambo, Vitinho, and Robert we should be more than capable of filling that spot.
2. Midfield is stacked, even if Berge does go. Brownhill, Cullen, and Massengo all looked good. We also have an embarrassment of riches out wide where Odobert, Koleosho, Zaroury, Benson, and JBG all offer something slightly different. The first two are way above this level.
3. Foster looks like he is going to bang in a hatful. Houdini looks a handful, and Jay will be great off the bench when needed.
4. When we were on the front foot (the first 15) we looked like we were going to move it forward much quicker than last season.
Negatives:
1. Odobert is wasted in the false 9 spot and Foster needs a foil. I hate to say it (because I'm a big fan of Zaroury) but WO needs to be out left.
2. Hladky was poor for me today. Looks worse than JT with his feet and very ponderous. Maybe it just signals that our coaches don't want us to play that way this year. I'm sure he'll be ok after the season he had with Ipswich, but it is telling that they weren't looking at him as a starter this year and he didn't sign a new contract after winning promotion.
3. Roberts looked off the pace. Not sure if last year knocked him back and he's hoping to leave, but didn't look up for it today to me.
4. Can't see this being our staring 11 at the end of the month. I'm worried we've not moved enough dead wood out and as the month moves on, we'll end up selling players we wanted to keep, to make up for it.

Great to see Luca back. Hope that he only had cramp. I assume SP wanted to give Anass a good run out on the left. However, Luca just has to play wide left as he is much more threatening from there.

Very much liked the look of Pires and crucially he is tall. He starts for me at Luton, where we need to be ready for them targeting our usually tiny full backs at the back post. If Beyer was fit, I'd be playing him at right back at Luton.

That’s the hottest I’ve ever been watching Burnley. Agree with most of what I’ve read, and it’s all a bit meaningless in a friendly.. but Foster looked good and strong, Cullen ran the midfield as well as ever, Pires looked much stronger and more tenacious defensively than I was expecting.

The new big lad up front doesn’t look ready yet, Zaroury hasn’t rediscovered his form unfortunately and the new keeper cannot kick a ball.

Not a bad day's work.

Defense overall looks good. Pires looks the part. Jury out on the goalie though. Would have liked to have seen Sambo given a run out.

Midfield OK. Missed Berge.

Odobert is better out wide. Would have liked to have seen Zaroury given a shot in that spot instead.

Good to see Koleosho back. Hell of a finish from Foster. New lad looks a unit, bit raw.

Got to think Twine, Trafford, MacNally, Redmond are first out the door.

Our set piece coach still working his magic just like last season.....

I thought he got forward quite a lot but only down the wing, not cutting inside like Maatsen often did, but that could be down to instructions. He seemed a lot more lively then Vitinho.

He certainly was better than good. I didn't know he took the ball home. Sadly died at 73 in 2012.

Not sure just what the keeper did wrong (other than not being able to stop a bullet header from an unmarked player!) for the jury to be out?

Saw Hladky at Ipswich in the the FA Cup, and he was just as composed on the ball as Muric, which appears to be the main criticism after yesterday.

Berge,Twine, Traff and McNally all rested ?

Post by Woodleyclaret » Mon Aug 05, 2024 9:21 am

All missing from yesterday's game.
Hopefully we are tying up Traffs return to City and Conways arrival with the others off to Bristol
Berge has to be £25m or he stays

I heard Berge just had a minor injury so wasn't risked.

Berge wasnt on the bench , which indicates a slight injury to me...the other 3 were but didnt get on the pitch which indicates they may well be off 😉

With the squad being back today we hopefully will see some movements out. I suspect the players like Churlinov, Bastian, Obefemi, Egan Riley, Costelloe are more likely to be loans as I dont see these players attracting a fee. We certainly dont need 7 centre halves so expect two of these to move out too

I was one of the first to point out my concerns with Hladky's footwork during the game. It certainly wasn't criticism or Trafford-level abuse by any means, just stating my concerns that he didn't look very assured with the ball at his feet but with the caveat that it was a very small sample size.

This nonsense about our keepers needs to stop. Whilst we persist with trying to always play out from the back, teams will press us leaving few options for the keeper. Mix it up and they won't know whether to stick or twist. There are very few that can pass long like Muric.
