SKY Q BOX

Just got an email from them telling me I can upgrade to a Sky Q box at no extra cost.
Anybody out there know if this is worth bothering with?

I have the older HD+ box and when I was with Sky I didn't go ahead with the free change. This is because I use Magic Eye for the bedroom and to have the Sky Q would need additional boxes which wasn't included in the upgrade.

Speaking to a UK based relative last week. He has just switched to sky glass and was given a deal for a second box for a one off payment was £23. I’m paying €10/month for my extra box.

My main concern with glass is lose internet and you lose tv. Not such a problem as it used to be.

They tried to sell it to me on the basis that I could watch a different programme in the bedroom from the living room, I explained there’s no point because I turn the living room off, go to bed and pick up what I've been watching.

Sky Q is only an upgrade to the original box. Ten times better but you can only watch different programmes with multi room which you don't have to have to get a Sky Q box

I got a Sky Q box in 2019 and would recommend it, far better than the previous box and more in tune with today’s tv world.

Yep we sent sky glass back after one week with constant freezing even though we have ultra broadband was absolutely rubbish

I got the same offer earlier this year and decided to take it replacing my HD Multi room system. A few teething problems but it allowed me to abandon the dish on the chimney and fit a new dish in a more accessible location as part of the install. It's not as easy to scan for channels as the old system in my view.

One irritant though is the picture and sound constantly going out of sync; turning the thing off and back on seems to cure it but its a bit of a pain when you are looking and listening to an interview and the voice is so far out of sync with the picture

I did the free upgrade no problems at all.

When I got Sky Q there was a big installation fee if I didn’t take a mini box but it was only £1 pm to take one and I could send it back after three months which I duly did.

He didn’t quibble when I said no.

I have Q and also 3 additional mini boxes giving us the ability to watch different channels in 3 rooms at the same time. Yo don’t pay for each additional box it is just a single payment of £10 for the 3.

Q is a superior product to the HD+ box in multiple ways. I do understand that some people do still use magic eye and therefore for them, it may not be a viable switch.

One of the great things about Q is that it brings all the streaming platforms into one box….so if you have Netflix, Prime, Disney etc they are all available on the Q box rather than loading up the relevant individual app on your smart TV each time.

The record function is better with the ability to record several channels at a time whilst watching another. I do use this a lot as I record a lot of nature stuff across multiple channels.

Sky Glass is a different beast altogether and whilst, arguably, a good concept, it is being drawn from Sky’s owners, Comcast, in America where the broadband network, as I understand it, is far superior to what we have here in the UK. Therefore, as with Virgin, if your internet goes down then you lose TV. Also (and this may have changed in recent models) it doesn’t have an inbuilt TV tuner for Freeview so in the ‘likely’ event you lose internet then you need an additional Freeview box to watch Freeview channels.

Sky Stream is just a way of delivering the Sky Glass concept to customers who do not want to pay out for the Glass TV. Again, you are beholden to a stable internet provision to ensure seamless, lossless to streaming.

If you are a Gold VIP member there are always offers available as well as taking advantage of Black Friday deals to renew with massive discounts. As I have said before, you don’t need to wait until your contract is coming to an end to renew it, you can renew at any time if you see a better deal, you will just pay a £20 admin fee (capped) but in many if not all instances you will save more than the £20 with the savings you get on the deal.

I have sky q after being a virgin customer for 20 plus years. Virgin was not available when I moved house a couple of years ago.

Been pretty impressed with the box and also have one mini box. However as posted on plenty of threads on here in the past the increases in subscription costs have been ridiculous.

Earlier this year when they put my costs up to £110 a month I decided that enough was enough and basically cancelled as much as possible. I now pay £44.50 a month for broadband, the basic TV package and still got one mini box.

The basic TV package is not something they actively promote on their website or on the phone to them. It allows you to keep your Sky q box and mini box. The last thing Sky want you to do is return any of your boxes. They were proposing to carry on charging me £10 a month for the mini box and when I said that I was happy to return it they reduced it to £5 a month for the next 18 months.

Functionality wise I think Sky q is pretty good. Better than the last TIVO I had with Virgin and generally I find the Sky services better than Virgin (but do think that both are ripping off barstewards with awful customer services !!)

As for sky glass we had a great guy install me a new TV when we moved and he had been fitting TV and sounds systems for years. He said that sky glass was one of the worst things he had seen in all his years in terms of quality of picture, breaking up etc. He also said that the cost and the contracts they were giving to the customers were an absolute rip off and he was coming across some real horror stories from people who were wanting him to install and set it up for them. He knew people in sky and was told by them that the technology for these kind of TVs is not ready yet and that Sky launched it fully aware of that.
