Re: Mission to Burnley 2
And the Brighton owner has very deep pockets (filled with his own money!)
Re: Mission to Burnley 2
I think the 500m gets taken out of context a bit. It includes a new stadium and training facilities, and money spent in the Championship getting to the Prem. In the Prem they are likely running at a net profit by now after the past few seasons.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 10:49 amYep - even doubled down a bit suggesting that Brighton spent 'decent money' but not 'a lot of money'...
Hmm - pretty certain £500 million is a lot of money. Crikey.

... After spending all that to get there?
Not sure about net profit but I imagine that they have very healthy cash flow.

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
Almost confirmation of VK losing the dressing room in the series, the JBG thing clearly didn’t go down well and his reluctance to adapt killed it.
Williams comes across as a good guy who works very hard, tide him alongside Mooney who also comes across well and it fills you with a bit more confidence in what happens behind the scenes.
Russell Ball on the other hand is an absolute galaxy away from the Burnley fans . You’d think that given the difference in cultures in USA and Burnley that he’d be the “translator” between Pace and the general fan. When I’m fact he just seems to be a puppet and a yes man. The drum thing made me cringe .
As for Pace , we’ll be generally comes across well and does seem to have the clubs best interest at heart , but the thing about the fans staying when we are getting pumped every week, well, wake up and smell the centre half at right back and the right back at left back Alan. My teenage son could see the issues in that respect but blind faith in VK seemed to continue. I have faith in him to learn from his divorce from Kompany however.
The squad - Very quiet from the young lads which is almost expected, but Cullen, Redmond and O’Shea cameos in the dressing room were reassuring to see even if Dara does leave this week coming. Perhaps being linked to a John Egan type is us looking to add “men” to the squad to help the youngsters .
The worst bit about it was seeing Nathan Tella and realising we didn’t sign him

Matt Williams completely misunderstood David’s point to, he wasn’t asking if we had 5 prem players right now but asking if we had 5 that would stay with us for the full ‘project’CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 10:44 amThanks yeah, it's right at the beginning of EP4 - think I was in the kitchen when that segment played.
He was absolutely spot on with everything that he said.
Re: Mission to Burnley 2
The worst bit for me was when Lyle got red carded and no one in the dressing room said a word to him.
And also when he was unboxing the drums, just shows how close we came to that. I did think the display a drum on the screen if it gets quiet as a warning was quite funny

What were peoples thoughts on Brownhill? Didn’t really strike me as a leader in the dressing room.

Yes he did, I think that was a bit of a defence mechanism from him.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 10:58 amMatt Williams completely misunderstood David’s point to, he wasn’t asking if we had 5 prem players right now but asking if we had 5 that would stay with us for the full ‘project’
It was a salient point from Checketts - who are our guys? I think we'd have said Berge, O'Shea, Cullen, Brownhill, maybe a few others but non that were guarantees.
From the previous regime we had a squad of them, which of course can be problematic, but finding that balance is the key.
I do think/hope that the board will have grown from the experience anyway.
At least the excitement is back now throughout the fanbase, no hangovers, straight back at it. UTC!

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
Out of context ?….or dependent on what angle you want to look at it from ?
Facts of the matter are is that Brighton were subsidised to the tune of almost £600m by their owner and for many seasons were posting losses of around £50m a year whilst at the same time they were performing no better (and often) worse than Burnley who were not subsidised by a penny during the same period.
In the last 2 or 3 years that’s changed for Brighton and they have started to make profit after some very astute player sales coupled with less than astute clubs like Chelsea willing to pay way over the odds.
But let’s not pretend that without the sugar daddy owner subsidising the club they would be anywhere near the position they are today. Good luck to them for having the great fortune to have an owner like that - if Burnley had one we would all be equally delighted.

Kompany seemed to lead them all at the beginning then it kind of skimmed through part of the season and then towards the end of the season Cullen was captain most match days and he always sounds very vocal.colne-claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 11:16 amOne of the only times I heard him speak though. Am I being thick in terms of finding where to watch this?
I have the SkySports App (login via Virgin Media) and despite Sky press release saying it’s on Sky Sports+ (which is meant to be in the Sky Sports app) it’s simply not there, no way to search or find it.
I don’t think I have Sky documentaries so Sky Sports+ is my only option till a torrent comes out.
Any help?

Hooked on ? Just a personal observation on a discussion forum. You are a little bit high and mighty aren’t you with your judgement. Are you a policeman by any chance ?123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 9:17 amYou are extremely hooked on MUD analysis stuff, it’s clear from the doc that we don’t purely sign players based of one analysis system, it’s a lot more in depth than that.
The issue isn’t the system we used to sign players, it clearly identified young players with potential that kompany wanted.
The issue was there wasn’t a David checketts talking to kompany and pace before the season started saying the type of player we need. Or even Matt Williams saying we need experienced heads

Don’t think you are allowed to use the term ‘policeman’ now at risk of mis gendering someone

Worth noting with Checketts - a quick read at his extensive career in pro sports (impressive, though U.S. based) explains why he spotted the flawed transfer/club strategy. It gives me renewed confidence in the board and the club's direction going forward.

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
I don’t know what his views are/were on Pace and Kompany but as an employee of the club I wouldn’t expect him to be critical of either. What I do know about him is the fact that he’s very experienced in what he does and damn good at what he does. I think we are very fortunate to have him at our club.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 10:25 am
Williams does come across well in his practice and ability to do his job but to me he’s another one who didn’t like to disagree with pace or kompany

But I doubt he would have it in him to say during the transfer window we need experience and men to kompany or pace. I understand that’s not his job but he seems well respected so his opinion should matter

That speech from foster was decent. Cork overreacted in my opinion. One more ep to go. Forgot how many dodgy decision went against us during the season.

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
I just watched the first of series 2 last night. To be honest Kompany didn’t impress me at all, especially in the dressing room, he spouted some absolute rubbish. When he spoke to Foster after the sending off I thought it was shocking to bring up his mental health in front of everyone. I’m glad he’s gone. Pace was so in awe of Kompany that he bottled sacking him and Kompany got out of Jail.

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
Foster said that the speech he gave after Bournemouth in the changing room saved his life, then went on to say he’d die for Kompany, so I didn’t get the impression he either minded about the speech or that it impacted his relationship with him.beddie wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 4:04 pmI just watched the first of series 2 last night. Just the sports package or is it on entertainment also?
Re: Mission to Burnley 2
From a quick google search it suggests he joined the board in 2021, so not sure how involved he is given the strategy was put in place and enacted whilst he has been at the club? Maybe it’s more he realised what we were lacking last year which can only be a good lesson for all our current board - but something that the man on the street could have warned.helmclaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 5:40 pmHe’s spent time with the All Blacks and at Real Madrid in the last couple of years observing how they work behind the scenes.

Re: Mission to Burnley 2
Just finished the second episode and started the 3rd. Just watched the board meeting at the start of the 3rd. It surprises me that having heard so much about how this club belongs in the premier league type stuff from Alan Pace, we then get Lee Mooney comparing us to a formula 2 car in a formula 1 championship. Talking as though the chances of this club competing and continuing to be a premier league club are very remote. It’s difficult to believe that he is talking about a club that was in the premier league from 2016 until 2022 and never really looked close to being relegated apart from the last of those seasons. Also, the thought of the club trying to replicate the atmosphere of what I am guessing you get at American sports makes me feel so uneasy. I know we once had cheerleaders but the atmosphere comes from what we are watching on the pitch. Fans pay good money to go and to be then told we must stay even if we’re watching total dross. Just shows the lack of understanding. Feels so different to the club we all knew just a few years ago. Have felt that way for a while and watching this has just strengthened my feelings. The connection between the fans, especially the local ones, and the club, isn’t as strong as it once was. But let’s hope that can be renewed this season.

The meetings around the drum are some of the most tone deaf things I’ve heard when it comes to this town.
Russell Ball saying after the Sheff United game that’s the kind of atmosphere that shows what it could be. Yeah funny that what happens when you win games of football.

Yeah Russell ball has no clue about football and can’t understand that actually winning games and still being in games at half time completely changes the atmosphereMilltown1882 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 8:13 pmThe meetings around the drum are some of the most tone deaf things I’ve heard when it comes to this town.

The doc confirms my belief that Pace still wanted Kompany to stay even as they were negotiating compensation, it is also not clear at what point Kompany falls out with Bellamy. They seem to have a working relationship right up to the end of the season.

Oh dear you must have a very sheltered life I’m sure some of our multi millionaire players can stand a light hearted comment and don’t need you to stick up for them but if it makes you feel important then hey ho I won’t rain on your parade.
