Split is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. More or less anywhere along the coast is superb but increasingly expensive and August sees the return of many exiles plus an influx of Croats from the north.

A little more South, we recently stayed in Cavtat, 30 mins or so on the bus from Dubrovnik.
Absolutey stunning little place with harbour. I get the impression that wherever you go on the Croation coast you can't go wrong.

Have been to Cavtat twice, about 12 - 13 years ago now, quiet harbour village type place with enough little restaurants , bakery and shops. It is in between the airport and Dubrovnik. We got a boat to Dubrovnik.

Another shout for Cavtat… very quiet, not much going on except eateries, but the food was excellent and we had a few days out - Dubrovnik by sea was excellent. Love Croatia as a holiday destination - more than I did in ‘94 anyway.

Thinking of Montenegro soon…

We did a couple of excursions from Cavtat, Mostar in Bosnia and Kotor / Budvar in Montenegro.

Went to Zadar a few years ago (Ryanair had just started flights) on a Jolly Boys trip. Great holiday, really friendly people, great food (they do a mean roasted pig), cheapest pint we found was the equivalent of just over a pound! Went to watch Zadar v the Bad Blue Boys (Dinamo Zagreb) - what an experience - something like stepping back to the 70's - riot police, flares regularly being thrown on pitch by the BBB. Amazing atmosphere in a very small ground. Tickets only a few quid. Highlight was a boat trip (fairly big ship from the docks) out around the many islands. We got off at an island called Iz - couple of bars and nothing really else there but fantastic views, great sunshine and the blue Med lapping at the side of the bar. Spent 4 days in Zadar and we had seen/done everything in that time. Lovely country, would visit again.

Had one day in each of Kotor Dubrovnik Zadar and Split earlier this year. By far our favourite place was Split. Didn’t care for Dubrovnik. RIP off

Another shout for Zadar, was intoxicated for most of the trip but from the bits I remember, it was lovely!

Just spent a week in Croatia. 3 days at the defected Croatia festival in Tisno then took the Catamaran over to Hvar for 4 days. Lovely country, would recommend for anyone.

Only done Zadar and Dubrovnik, along that stretch of coast and regard them both as two day towns. They do have options for day trips though.
Dubrovnik: Cavtat, Montenegro or Mostar(B/H).
Zadar: island trips and I would definitely recommend a bus trip to Plitvice Lakes.

I know you didn't ask, but the north is beautiful too.

Impressive Roman amphitheatre and the odd civic building in Pula, plus a boat trip up the coast to Rovinj.

Stunning

LOPUD: one of my favourite place in Europe. A beautiful, tiny island.

Krka National Park (near skradin) has super impressive waterfalls. Look them up

Went to Croatia in late June and early July. Lovely place but expensive. Did the trip to Mostar which was well worth the journey beautiful place and the waterfalls were amazing on the way back. Visited Lopud and really liked it. Great place but make sure you take plenty of money with you.

I went to Eastern Croatia last year where relatively few tourists go. There's no doubt the move to the Euro has been used by all or most service offerers as an opportunity to significantly increase prices.

The new Pelješac Bridge has now made it possible to avoid going through Bosnia when driving from one part of Croatia to another.
