Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
Anybody going to out see the Perseids Metor shower tonight and tomorrow night (around midnight to sunrise) as The Earth passes through the tail of "The Swift Tuttle" Comet
apparently the Northern lights may also appear
.
Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
Thanks for the heads up on the Perseids! Don’t think there’s any chance of Northern Lights at the moment I’m afraid. Worth checking this website:

Or this one, click on Space and then Earth (also pretty cool for looking at wind/hurricanes etc):

Can this be viewed anywhere where it’s night time? As in, if you’re on holiday can you see them?

Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
The Northern Lights were captured last night (from a friend's garden near Newcastle). We have been away camping this weekend in dark skies (as we do every year for the Perseids shower) but cloud meant there wasn't much of a show to see this time. It's usually spectacular and one of my favourite weekends of the year.

The Perseids are peaking tonight and you can get more info here:- https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/pe ... ere-to-see
The Aurora was visible a few times last night from anywhere in the UK, but mostly from anywhere in Northern England. I use Aurora watch UK app to check.

I was in the garden counting satellites and meteors until midnight.
The satellites won 17 to 4.

It's strange we've never been able to see the Northern Lights before. And since the US Haarp programme based in Alaska we're being treated to such breathtaking views of them regularly.

Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
Perhaps the Aurora Borealis more regular visibility in southern latitudes is associated with the weakening of Earths magnetic poles. Magnetic North and South poles are due a reversal sense - which is preceded by a weakening of the magnetic flux. Flux weakening is already underway. The magnetic N pole is moving southerly quite quickly ( 55 km/yr at the moment) and is weakening. The combined weakening and southerly shift in the magnetic North may be allow the solar flare interaction to become more prominent at the UK's latitude.

Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
I wondered why everyone got better views than me but then she who must be obeyed told me you need to look through a phone to get the full view… at which point I asked how it was different to looking at a picture of them.

Just heard a weather expert on BBC Radio 1 News explain it was due to a volcano on the Sunatlantalad wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 10:58 amPerhaps the Aurora Borealis more regular visibility in southern latitudes is associated with the weakening of Earths magnetic poles. Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
You're right ... took several shots from 8pm to 11pm last night and quite a few were just a normal night sky, but at 10pm the difference was amazing and our whatsapp group started posting pictures from all over the place. So I googled about why phones see what we can't with the naked eye....

Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
There's some great conspiracy theories all attributed to HAARP, the (easily explained) increased visibility of the northern lights being quite a tame one. My favourite so far is it caused a blizzard in Iowa to harm Trump's chances. If you can tie it in with 'Chemtrails', you're on to a winner in the nutjob recesses of the internet.

Call me old fashioned, but it's disappointing that what you witness with the naked eye is way less spectacular than the exposures achieved on a mobile device.

If you wear a patch over your weaker eye and wear reading glasses >2.25 strength over the other you're view of the sky will be much closer to that of a good cameradougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Oct 11, 2024 8:22 pmCall me old fashioned, but it's disappointing that what you witness with the naked eye is way less spectacular than the exposures achieved on a mobile device.

Re: Perseids and Northern Lights tonight ?
I have some cracking photos but what I witnessed at the coast near Newcastle was way beyond anything my phone captured. Reds and greens out to see, above my head and heading inland. Stunning display.
