Huddersfield or Luton

Post by TheFamilyCat » Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:03 am

Which was the better opening day performance?

Despite scoring 4 last night I'm going with Huddersfield. Nobody knew what to expect that night and I think every Burnley fan was stunned by how we played with a number of new faces.

We were very good last night but we probably all knew what those players were capable of, so less of a shock factor.

Huddersfield for me also.

Before the match nobody knew how we would play or what the players were like. The first half especially will live in the memories for many years. One in our group said at half time the whole division has just seen the champions and the league doesn't start until tomorrow.

Last night was very very good though.

Time will tell but Huddersfield needed Neil Warnock to save them that season it is unlikely Luton will be in a relegation scrap but at this stage any team may be in a relegation scrap. In 13-14 season we were favourites to go down and hardly set the world on fire in first few games.
Both games showed us to be the better team but we cant play Kompany way with Trafford in goal can we?

Huddersfield for the shock value.

But last night was a far better win against far better opposition. They have the best two centre forwards in the league to test any defence that aren't up for it. Fouling or diving like Barnes did for us.

Have we ever beaten our main rivals for promotion so easily before?

Luton, way above the Huddersfield game, though we did have better players last night

It's true Huddersfield was a complete surprise in the way we played. Nobody at the time new how bad Huddersfield would turn out to be - surprise play-offs the previous season, relegation candidates now.

Last night it looks like we played against a very strong side albeit weakened in some areas but who had stability - same manager, mostly the same players and tactics. They could also be well pleased with their efforts last year whilst we could certainly not. I wasn't sure how the mix of players we had with all their frailties would perform and was not too optimistic for this season.

Therefore last night for me. I loved the sharp counter attacks and the way space was created for them. There were other threats too. Whilst there was some sloppiness I also liked our aggression. The substitutions were also exactly right.

I enjoyed them both immensely.

I'm not sure I can choose, which is incredible considering how much I enjoyed Uddersfield.

Luton 100%

Huddersfield were gash that season. We have the benefit of hindsight now.

Luton won’t lose like that all season. That result can’t be understated. That was massive

Both magical evenings but this was a far tougher level of opposition than Huddersfield, not to mention we put the chances away whereas against Huddersfield we couldn't quite manage to get the second (and third, and fourth). I think it was an incredibly impressive performance last night for a variety of reasons, not least that Parker has had a limited amount of time and has seemingly built a fantastic squad atmosphere already.

Luton for me.
Great to see some of our new players' input to the team, and a great start for Parker.
Long may these kind of performances continue.

Both performances impressive for different reasons.

I had Luton away down as one of if not the toughest game of the season. Unless something goes very wrong at Luton, last night's result will probably be up there with their heaviest defeats this season. And by a team playing their first game under a new manager.

We were all blown away by our performance and style against Huddersfield. But in the end many teams played well against Huddersfield that season and we came up against a manager that would soon be sacked. It was a great performance, but different levels of opponent.

Taking a step back, it's just nice to see us comparing good performances after what we all had to watch last season.

Also in the Luton camp.

A lot of people we saying before last night's game they'd be happy with a point, I'm not sure they were thinking the same prior to Huddersfield. I do get the Huddersfield game was an eye-opener in terms of the way we played compared to what had gone on before but last night's performance was another level.

In mitigation, I didn't watch last night (puts tin hat on) but as much as I enjoyed the Huddersfield game and the surprise of our total domination I was left with (confirmation of) doubts about where our goals would actually come from. I expected frustration. Barnes looked off the pace.

I've only seen highlights but having spoken to people I respect, I feel much better about this game against a fancied team. On paper, Luton away looks an awful way to start the season and we dealt with it.

So, Luton. Convincingly so.

Luton-because when we last played them in the Championship, and again when we played them in the PL, we really struggled with their physicality, and the balls into our box. Trafford got just one thing wrong last night and did not have a real save to make. We could have scored another three last night

The best since we beat Port Vale 2-1 and Warren Joyce scored a couple.

I think last night put to bed the notion that the current squad is weaker than the one that finished the 2022/23 season.

The better performance I think was last night. On paper, arguably the toughest game of the season and it could have been 8-1.

To think that Benson and Zaroury don't even make our starting 11, gives an idea of how strong we are.

Tough one. Very close.

Huddersfield for me for the shock value.

Last night was like taking a step back in time, which was also refreshing, and take Newcastle's point about the gulf in quality. Fantastic though.

I know this is going to sound like hindsight based on last night's result but I have a hunch Luton won't challenge as everyone expects this season.

Two years ago they had one of those "miracle" seasons, like us in 2013/14. I just think they'll struggle to bounce back like we did.

When picking Huddersfield I did so taking into account Barnes led the line, Charlie Taylor played centre half, Bastien & Costelloe played and we still did what we did that night.

The starting 11 last night was very strong for this division and the bench had players on who would walk into most teams in this division, plus Luton had some players missing

I remember being pretty shocked the way we played against Huddersfield. We totally dominated them and it’s also the first time in a long while we had seen such a different style of play and tactics. That game could and should have easily been 5 or 6 nil - we made 5 very good chances in their area in the first half alone.
But that said Huddersfield were a really poor side and one of the relegation favourites

Luton last night was great - again exciting to see new manager, new players, new tactics etc with trepidation as to how bad we were last season and having to come up against a horrible physical team on a horrible pitch.
I think we were lucky to face a Luton with a few injuries and giving a couple of really young and inexperienced players their debuts.

Luton probably shades it for me though - scoring 4 goals away and 2 into your won supporters in the first game of the season on TV is gonna be pretty hard to beat.

Both were brilliant for different reasons -

Huddersfield nobody had a scooby what to expect, we had also just been battered off Newcastle in a pre-season friendly and there were some concerns about how we'd get on with a vastly new direction in BFC's history.

It was pretty mental to see the Clarets play in such a stark contrast to the prior season and come away with a win, zipping the ball about and dominating possession. Though as others have mentioned Huddersfield were a poor side...

Last night was a complete performance in every sense of the word. On the road at an infamously tough place to go against a team tipped for promotion that finished above us last season and we properly stuffed them.

A lesser side may have capitulated after conceding but we rode that bit of adversity and stuck two more past them with moments of real quality.

It has also quelled any lingering concern about Scott Parker or anyone still clinging on to the VK era.

Both were immensely enjoyable for different reasons but from a purely objective view?... I think it has to be last night against Luton Town

I said weeks ago that Luton would be midtable this season, and I still think this. Good to put them firmly in their place, though.

Got to be Luton! I made Luton favourites to win the league before a ball was kicked, keeping the nucleus of there squad from last year there top two are a real handful. But the way we Swept them aside was immensely impressive. Its one result though I still think Luton will be right up there and still might finish above us.Sheff utd have just signed the young kid from palace who looks a real player to add to a good squad. But what a statement by us but it won’t be a runaway like last time.

Luton

Huddersfield was very refreshing. An eye opener at worrying times. Lots of nice stuff, but took a goal from our loanee fullback to win it. And was an ineffective second half.

Luton last night, we had total control again but didn't mess about. Far more effective football scoring 4 vs a relegated team like us. Big statement. And very robust defensively

Luton because although Huddersfield was a major shock we needed confirmation that Odobert, Kolosheo and Foster et al are as good as we thought they were....

And because the jeopardy involved is so huge now that we need PL next season with a team that can thrive. And subject to what happens between now and Aug 31 it is clear we have more than a good chance.

Luton. Better opposition.

In hindsight the way we played against Huddersfiekd, putting them to sleep before striking like a snake, also out us to sleep at times. Parker’s style has more tempo, and we need if it we want to avoid Alan moaning about the fans again in Season 3 of MTB, and getting a drum delivered. We all know of course it is team tempo and attitude that creates atmosphere.
