Good player, but on that showing tonight, we can afford to drag a whacking great fee out of United and still be ok at the back, as long as we keep hold of the rest.

Re: Berge
If you’re Sander Berge, you’re probably pretty relaxed. If United pay the fee (£30m) they’ll get him, if they don’t, they won’t. I’m sure he realises that this side will be right up there in the top two conversation so he’s more than likely getting back to that league in a years time in a worse case scenario. What will be, will be.

Daily mail should have been enough for you, he was injured before the open training day which was before the United interest, him and JBG carrying knocks.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:52 amDaily Mail reporting that he was left out yesterday, following interest from Manchester United ... make of that what you will![]()
We had Trafford, O’Shea, brownhill, odobert, twine, McNally and weghorst in the squad all have been linked with moves away
Re: Berge
He isn't Utd's first choice in terms of midfield options. They will finalise only if the others don't come in.
Before that, they have some fairly large fish to fry anyway. It will be later on in the window, it at all he goes to Man U.
Another London based PL club who have shown interest seems to have gone with another pair of options, that's all I can say.
Him leaving is in the balance, but by no means a banker.

Sounds like some classic, in-depth journalism from the Daily Mail. You know where you stand with a newspaper like that.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 8:52 amDaily Mail reporting that he was left out yesterday, following interest from Manchester United ... make of that what you will![]()

Believe it or not I think we missed Berge yesterday. If we had his driving runs from midfield to add to Odobert and Kolosheo out wide we would have reached double figures. Ok exaggeration but 5 or 6.

If we sell Berge we have to replace him. No way you can go in to a 46 game season with three central midfielders for 2 roles.
Hopefully United get Ugarte.

Re: Berge
If we sell Berge the obvious option is probably Ben Sheaf. I imagine he would cost between £15-20m though but we need that profile of player with a bit of height. Winning games like last night will make us look a far rosier prospect to players like that now than when we were a bit of a question mark regarding our promotion credentials in the early summer.

Re: Berge
It's a really difficult one to call just now. Is he actually injured or are we saying that as cover for protecting him prior to a likely sale? We could play seriously hard ball with any suiters, including Utd, but if we cause him to stay against his will we could easily have a very peed off player on our hands. If he's happy to stay and commit should we not get the money we're looking for , then great, but if his head has been turned keeping him is pointless. Having said that, Berge also has to think about where he will sit in the pecking order at somewhere like Old Trafford because he really won't be at the top end I'd suggest and so the wages might be lovely, but it could be very frustrating playing just a bit part. Obviously we'll see.

He was but the issue isn't Vitinho. It's the ability to break lines. Luton have injury problems and were very naive. Other teams will sit in and cause different problems.claretskeith wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:18 amI thought Vitinho was one of our best players. Great finish too.

Re: Berge
He'd replace Vitineo surely, who would have to slot it out with Roberts for rb. That would mean a super fast front 3 that would be perfect for counter attacking, with Berge centrally behind to feed them. .

Re: Berge
Exactly this...! From what I could see Luton played man for man with quite a high line. Parker completely did them and their injury issues didn't help them.summitclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:28 amHe'd replace Vitineo surely, who would have to slot it out with Roberts for rb. Other teams will park the bus and compress play and Odobert and Foster will struggle with no space to run into.
Newcastle did it last season at Turf brilliantly. Obviously, Newcastle have got much better players but Berge is very good at breaking lines simply by carrying the ball from the half way line creating space.
At the end of the day, you don't want to lose quality players but if we have to we have to....!

It doesn't mean there isn't real interest in him, there is, but if he was fit he would be near to the squad.
Re: Berge
I really don't think that Berge could have replaced Vitinho in the excellent tactical system we played last night. We had him playing a hybrid role of right wing back out of possession and right wing in possession, and we had Odobert playing a hybrid role of right midfielder out of possession and more of a number 10 in possession. I'm not sure Berge would have been suited to either of those roles, and so he'd have played at the expense of Cullen or Brownhill who were both excellent as well. Either that, or we'd have had to change completely to accommodate him.

Re: Berge
Unless you are assuming Odobert and Kolosheo never track back that is how anyone right sided middle field player would play.ksrclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:39 amI really don't think that Berge could have replaced Vitinho in the excellent tactical system we played last night. I think Parker may have played Vitinho there to mark Alfie Doughty but Doughty just switched sides when it suited.
And different teams will provide different challenges. If a team parks the bus there is no space behind for our quicker players to run into and you need something different.
Again I refer to Newcastle last season who simply sat in and hit us on the break. As did quite a few teams after weathering the first 20 minutes.
But it's all mute anyway because Berge is probably already gone.

Re: Berge
This does seem to be serious move by Man Utd.
I think it will be disappointing if he goes there.
It won’t be the end of the world but he does offer us a robust option in midfield, and will be missed.

Then I'm sure that our non-rigid new manager will do things like play two upfront (Weggy?) and players that are good in tight spaces.ClaretPete001 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:24 amHe was but the issue isn't Vitinho. How will a lesser team beat us if they sit in and try and counter? Our centre halves are rapid, strong and can defend in space exceptionally well... Good luck Championship!

Blimey Cool. Let's wait a few games before we drink the Parker Kool Aid (pardon the pun). I think Berge is a good player who would be the attacking option in a centre mid 3 moving Odobert and Kolosheo out wide. I've said the same thing for quite a whileCoolClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 3:04 pmThen I'm sure that our non-rigid new manager will do things like play two upfront (Weggy?) and players that are good in tight spaces.

I know if Berge goes we are probably too strong for this league anyway but there is always next season and we are only 1 game in out of 46. It was just a discussion point.
And yes, it's nice to have a more pragmatic manager - if only we had got him last season.

Didn't we play an entire Championship winning campaign with just Dean Marney and Dave Jones?
Brownhill and Cullen's injury record are great and we've still got Massengo to come in.
If it's experience we need, bring back Cork as an experienced backup.
IF we sell Berge it's going to be a Cork-type signing or a cheap one from abroad.
We need to recoup some money. We've got loans to pay.

If you are owed money by BFC, why should you wait a year ? Some of these people could put us into administration, I think we have to sell first and foremost to get the squad to the permitted level, but also to get creditors back on board to show wr are a responsible business that pays our dues, you don't know when you'll need them again. We've enough of talent to go up with or without Berge.
