Foster underrated

Post by Stonehouse » Tue Aug 13, 2024 10:05 pm

Watched last night’s game again today initially thinking Foster wasn’t doing much but the amount of chasing and closing down he did was unbelievable, and the Vitinhio’s display was the best he’s ever played for us .

That run for the 4th was magnificent and something that could only be done by him in this league.

As foe Vitinho he was fabulous yesterday, my man of the match and his best game for the club.

I actually thought Foster played pretty well for the whole match - he was holding on to the ball quite well and laying it off nicely, despite being up against a good Luton centre half in Mengi.

And then his run to set up Vitinho, literally from box to box, was absolutely brilliant and he showcased his pace and power.

I thought the whole team last night looked like a unit of pace, power, height, aggression, athleticism, and technical quality. We reminded me of Newcastle who have big and strong athletes everywhere. It's why I'm so keen for us to hold on to the players who started last night.

I agree with the OP and he’ll have been disappointed not to score last night.

He was making spaces for other players as well by taking defenders out of the way. People think that playing well is all about what you do with the ball but taking defenders out of the game to leave gaps is just as important.

Hopefully, a fully fit Foster, both mentally & physically will be a major asset to our progress this season. His strength & workrate throughout the Luton game was superb. Hit fitness level was impressive in making that box to box run & assist in the 80th minute. What a great benchmark to set. I'm sure the goals will come for him, hopefully with Amdouni as his striking partner.

Vitinho in his interview credited Lyle with the goal ... and you could see in their celebration what it meant to both players.

Just wish some of our lot would get behind him and others (Traff etc etc) and stop sniping and griping ;)

Foster is a real team player.

I can see a real togetherness in them, it could be another special season.

He was 33/1 to be top scorer in the division this season - I know he's more than just a goal scorer, but seemed very high odds.

The view that he was holding the ball up well and laying it off was not the view of those on the match thread. I watched on Telly but as far as I recall all the goals came from quick ball or pacy runs and not through hold up play.

The general consensus was exactly the opposite. He reminds me more of an Andre Grey than a Sam Vokes or Chris Wood. And that's not to criticise Foster you wouldn't criticise Sam Vokes for not being able to make a pacy run from deep and laying off the ball for an assist.

And it's not to say he can't lead a line well I'm just not convinced he did on Monday.

Foster is like if Andre Gray had a touch and technique. He's clearly and understandably given his mental health battles a form/confidence player, we saw last year that when he gets on a roll he's a force. Just needs to hit his stride and he'll be far too good for this league.

Vitinho has always had absolutely elite movement and positioning at least in the creative/attacking sense, genuinely amongst the best I've ever seen for Burnley. Last time in the Championship it stood out instantly I lost count of the times he made runs or found space and nobody spotted the pass to him, it's why he worked better at RB with JBG ahead of him too, another positionally intelligent mover who could generate more opportunities for him while covering. His end product and final ball technique is what lets him down and I think it stands out more than is fair because he's Brazilian, and you kind of expect the individual technique from Brazilian players but maybe not always the team play or workrate. Ive said since we signed him that if we can develop his finishing technique (as in cross/pass too not just shot) he'd be a top player, you can understand from his movement how he got in Brazil's practice squad as a teenager.

First half some of his hold up play was a bit poor, but second half his all round game was tremendous.

After Monday, our opponents will be concerned about us having threats all over the pitch. They can't double up on all of them so hopefully Lyle will get a bit more space to operate in.

He's got pace, power and strength.

He can hold the ball up well, his link-up play is good and he can run with the ball.

His shooting and finishing can be excellent (see his goal vs Cadiz).

Needs to work on his heading though.

Foster could be POTY if he plays to his potential. I look forward to watching him in a confident and happy side this season.

I remember Skippy scoring a solo goal when he ran the entire length of the Bob Lord stand leaving everyone in his wake to score in the cricket field stand end.
That may have been against Luton but to be honest I can’t really remember who that team were. For some reason I have Viv Busby in the back of my mind who died a couple of months ago

Thought he grew into the game really well. And the run/pass was magnificent. He's still young and a bit inconsistent phase to phase. Sometimes, the ball just doesn't stick. If he could protect the ball a little bitter as we go through the season he'll be a hell of a player in this league

Skippy's goal may have been at home to West Ham, or maybe Leeds, but my memory for games has never been great. What does stick in my mind was a home game in very wet conditions, where his speed and strength made him untouchable and uncatchable. Not sure if that was the game of his long solo run goal or not.

Was spotted and with us to win the league was a nice 125/1 double with Skybet

I love him but he also frustrates me. He’s got the lot but needs to be more consistent and I am sure it will come.

Villa away last season he was tremendous so we know how good he is - we need more performances like that from him. But again, it will come.

He will be fired up for every game but that game at the end of the month will be his !!!!!

Once in a while he shows glimpses of real ability, he spends far too long in games completely anonymous, not troubling a defence at all and the far too many sloppy passes and cheap giveaways.

But he’s young and hopefully will improve.

More than possibly any player in my time watching Burnley, Foster needs the unconditional support of the fans whether he's going through a hot streak or a rough patch.

I think he's a potentially outstanding centre forward who can score goals at any level. I thought he had a very good game the other night and whilst of course he's got some stuff that he can improve (he's 23 and hasn't played that many games so it's not a surprise), physically and technically he's got all the raw ingredients to go right to the top. If he can get on a roll this season he's got the potential to be unstoppable.

He works hard too.

I don’t think LF has ever been underrated. He’s clearly a talented football with occasional glimpses of a real elite level CF. Once he gets a good run in the side and shows consistency,we’ll then be able to truly judge him . This league should be tailor made for him though , especially with the speed and skill around him .
