Cardiff Programme ... Peter Whittingham
Apologies if this has been mentioned, but the match programme today listed the late Peter Whittingham as the Cardiff no.7 amongst the line-ups ..
Whittingham had a brief 7 game loan-spell with Burnley in 2005. He then joined Cardiff from his parent Club, Aston Villa in 2007, and played 457 games and scored 96 goals from midfield over a 10 year period. He retired at 32. In 2020, he was having a few drinks with friend in a Pub in Barry, near Cardiff, when some " horseplay " went tragically wrong & he was pushed through a fire-door, and fell down a flight of steps. He died from head injuries the same day, 18th March 2020. His second daughter was born two months after his death. A few months later, Cardiff City retired the Number 7 shirt, as a tribute ...
An old University friend has been in touch this evening, a Cardiff fan, who'd spotted that Burnley had included his shirt and name in the squad named in today's programme. He described it as a " a touch of class from your Club, mate .. makes the result a bit easier to take " ..
Well done everyone concerned ..

We criticise, unfortunately rightly more often than not, our club on here (myself included).
However, it is incumbent upon us to give credit to BFC when it gets things right as it has done here.

Absolutely class from the club to include Peter Whittingham's name and number in the programme. A lovely tribute to a talented player who left us too soon. Well done, Burnley FC!

I’ll spend time posting this just to say this is exactly what our club should epitomise and whoever thought of it, well done, you have my sincere respect.

Been a lot of criticism about the club deservedly about the ticketing fiasco but they have got this very right. Remember the player and a very nice touch.

Time will tell, but is it going to be a way of just highlighting ex players who played for us? (Which, in itself is quite a good idea)
Re: Cardiff Programme ... Peter Whittingham
I dont see how it can be… the only reason we’ve the ability to do this on the teams list is due to the fact cardiff retired the numberburnleytom wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2024 10:56 pmTime will tell, but is it going to be a way of just highlighting ex players who played for us? Fantastic and really top class gesture from us here
Re: Cardiff Programme ... Peter Whittingham
I clicked on the link to read the Cardiff forum, one of the comments say 'Burnley are one of the hated clubs'
Irony alert after having the enjoyment of visiting Ninian park back in the day.
And didn't we applaud their fans outside the ground when they won promotion a few seasons ago rather than smash the supporters coach windows like as happened in S Wales.

As I was walking on today, a few Welsh Neanderthal knuckle draggers were slurring “ Burnley’s a shithole “. Jesus, have you ever been near Cardiff? What a dump. Makes Burnley look like Wilmslow, comparing the two.
