Everton...Another Season of Struggle?

Post by ElectroClaret » Sun Aug 18, 2024 7:59 am

A 0-3 battering at home to Brighton to start the season off, in what SD called a "horrible game" that also saw Ashley Young sent off, a defensive injury crisis already,
last season at GP and still no buyer on the horizon.

Not looking good.

Guess that’s what happens when you sell your best players year on year and don’t replace them.

There squad right now is looking really really poor

Haven’t they only sold Onana, who wasn’t seemingly favoured by Dyche (according to their fans)? They’ve spent on a new cb and cm too?

I did lol at 42 year old Ashley Young starting again yesterday.

Tarks & Keane looked very vulnerable at the back. Braithwaite is a huge loss to them at present

Which is a mental statement

I read the other day Onana played every minute that he was fit.

I think this will be there fourth summer in a row making a profit (large profit). They are selling everything they can

How on earth have Everton stayed up last few seasons with the offloading of players in a” sell sell “ environment and seemingly paltry inward investment I’ve no idea . Lampard looked broken when he was saved by Richalson and Gordon ( neither truly replaced ) They shifted Onana,Iwobi etc . The club looks an utter shambles and despite Dyche’s noble firefighting , they’re now surely all about a shiny new stadium and a shiny new “ brand name “ manager .

You have to wonder.

I liked Everton in the 80s when they were a very good side, recently I've grown to dislike them with a passion the ideal scenario for me would us be swapping places with them come next May.

If you go on their forum , the comments about Dyche and some of the ex Burnley players could have been written on here 3-5 years ago. Perhaps the fans see the same thing. I feel this is the year they go down , they have avoided it the past few years, the side is aging and talent being sold . It needs a complete rebuild

Well they could have started that yesterday but they overturned a penalty awarded for them - despite sending the ref over to the monitor to review it then not showing it for him to do so

From the highlights on match of the day, Everton should/could have been 3 goals up. Same as Cardiff with us, but that's football.

They have 2 poor full backs for the level though.

Just shows how unrepresentative of the general support forums are. I live on Merseyside and know a lot of Everton fans and the overwhelming majority accept that Dyche is doing the best job possible with the hand he’s been dealt.

They're a bottom 6 club but they've still got a much stronger squad than the 3 that came up. Look at us last season...they were stronger all over the pitch in all the games against us and I don't see any of the promoted 3 being better. If they'd have taken their early chances yesterday the game would have panned out differently. As for Dyche, I know a lot of Everton fans and all are content with him.

That fanbase has been toxic for a while. I think a lot of Dyche’s principles that stood us in good stead for so long are difficult for other clubs to accept - a lot confused they spent £18m on a new CB (O’Brien) and left him on the bench but we know he likes to integrate players slowly. McNeil puts that sitter away and it could have been a different story but that’s the PL.

Dyche simply cannot build a team for long term, zero evolution or improvement. Just a team of old players built for the here and now, which tends to immediately work but a few years down the line the senior pros aren’t quite as good.

The Everton fans are sick of Dyche, he’s spent some decent money there since going in and one of the complaints is his
obsession with calamity Michael Keane and Young.

You have just spent 23£m on a new central defender from Lyon, why is he still playing Keane

I think Dyche is a solid Premier League manager who did amazing for us but I doubt he'll ever get a team to finish in the top half of the Prem

This summer and last summer apart from Ashley Young he hasn't signed anybody over the age of 26, this summer the oldest is 24 is that not building long term?
He would have been close to Brighton in the league last season without points deductions, he's doing a good job.

For the past couple of seasons Everton have been among the lowest scoring teams in the PL which always makes them vulnerable to being drawn into a relegation scrap. Yesterday against Brighton no goals scored and just a single shot on target.

I assume this must be a different Dyche to the one that was at Burnley for nearly 10 years (about as long term as you can get in football these days) and who oversaw a 2nd place finish, then a 1st placed finish, then kept us up (first time ever) and then went on to finish in the Europa League.

But you're right, never shown anything long term or improved anyone

Up and down like you said, for his final few years we were a badly aging declining pile of crap and that’s what happens when you sign old players on big wages over young alternatives. I know a lot of Evertonians and they are not blaming Dyche but the owners for the mess they are in. They are hoping for the "big sugar daddy" to appear like magic, wave his wand containing billions and they will suddenly become a top four club once more, with a shiny new stadium. Deluded perhaps but they are a real sleeping giant with a massive fan base and serious potential. I doubt that Dyche would survive the magic wand though :o

Have they any other options other than youngsters for Gana Gueye though? Ditto Young, who else have they got? They’re a shambles off the pitch and it’s clear deals aren’t being done to help the team, other than O’Brien, N’Diaye and Irongebenoum (spelling!), who did start.

Up and down like you said, for his final few years we were a badly aging declining pile of crap and that’s what happens when you sign old players on big wages over young alternatives. Give me Josh Cullen over Dale Stephens every day of the week. I’ll take Koleosho over Aaron Lennon too. I’ll have Vitinho over Bardsley too.

You add those 3 to the solid experienced foundation we had and suddenly it looks like planning for the future.
The irony is the season we signed dale Stephens that summer and stayed in the premier league that season.

With Cullen and Koleosho we were relegated with the lowest points tally in Burnley’s history (3 point season).

It’s not as simple as you make out. You need to find a balance. That was something both VK and Dyche failed at.

I think Dyche is a solid Premier League manager who did amazing for us but I doubt he'll ever get a team to finish in the top half of the Prem
I seem to remember an excellent season touring Europe.

That was the final window when Dyche had all the power and we brought in Aaron Lennon and Dale Stephens, both on wages north of £30,000 a week. Like we both said, you need balance of which both VK and Dyche failed to find.

He inherited an expensive squad and he’s obsessed with playing a 39 year old at full back. Obsessed with playing the hopeless Keane. 34 year old Gana Gueye another he’s obsessed with who gave away one of the goals Yesterday.

Expensive squad maybe but who would you pick at right back instead of him?
There's a lot going on at Everton that I wouldn't be blaming Dyche for.
